Metro SystemRelieves Trafficin the Metropolis

Since mid-2004, the new Blue Linemetro system has been contributingto a reduction in the volume of in-dividual traffic, improved environ-mental conditions and thus a greaterquality of life in this 10 million in-habitant city. “We want to make theoption of changing over from car tometro as attractive as possible”, saysthe general manager of the operatorcompany Bangkok Metro CompanyLimited (BMCL).

Complete Programme for Mass TransitScope of Supply from Siemens

The contract awarded to SiemensTransportation Systems comprisednot only project management andsystem integration of all electro-mechanical system elements butalso the following items:● supply of 19 three-car metro

trains including power supply● signalling equipment for automatic

train operation and the entire scopeof surveillance

● telecommunications system● supervisory control and data aquisi-

tion system● platform screen doors● automatic fare collection system● depot and workshop equipment● complete signage

Each metropolis knows the

problems caused by an excessive

volume of individual transport.

The city of Bangkok also suffers from

this phenomenon. The extremely

rapid growth of the city which is

now one of Asia’s prime business

addresses has simultaneously re-

sulted in considerable mobility and

environmental problems. Before

Siemens Transportation Systems

introduced the Bangkok Skytrain

System in the mid-1990’s, the aver-

age speed of inner-city traffic was

10 km/h. In addition, Bangkok was

one of the world’s cities with the

highest air pollution levels. Relief

was encountered with the “Skytrain”

turnkey project, the elevated metro

which Siemens implemented from

1995 to 1999.

Speed Counts for Siemens28-month Project Duration

Siemens Transportation Systems succeeded in implementing thisdemanding, complex turnkey projectin record time. In December 2001,Siemens and the operator BMCL signed the supplies and services contract for railway equipment. Thiswas followed on February 22, 2002by the “Instruction to Commence”.And merely two years later, on March 1, 2004, the new metro startedtrial operation. The contract for theM.R.T. Chaloem RatchamogkhonLine, referred to in short as the “Blue Line”, has a volume of 352 mil-lion euros. The line links 18 metrostations in the city centre, includingthree interchanges to the SkytrainLine. The system is designed for afinal capacity of 57,000 passengersper hour and direction and a head-way of two minutes at a commercialspeed of 35 km/h. The start-up capacity is 12,000 passengers perhour and direction.

Project Management and System Integration

“Flying Metros”Unusual Approaches towardsRapid Implementation

Siemens’ flexibility in dealing withcustomer requests was demon-strated when the Thai Governmentinquired whether the contractuallystipulated project duration of only30 months could be reduced evenfurther. Within the context of a acceleration programme, the con-tractual partners agreed to reducethis duration by another two months.Siemens accepted this challenge andwas able to start the first demonstra-tion runs four months prior to theopening date. All in all: record timefor Siemens Transportation Systemsin project implementation.

At the Government’s request, thefirst of the three-car trains was eventransported by plane from Vienna toBangkok, as early as eight monthsfollowing the start of production. The last of the total of 19 metrotrains was able to roll out of trainproduction in Vienna on schedule.

The tight time frame and the con-siderably reduced project durationimposed stringent requirements oncoordination of the turnkey project,in particular in consultation withSiemens Transportation Systems’own fields of competence and sub-contractors and with external partiesin the field of installation and systemintegration of civil and building ser-vices engineering. Siemens Transpor-tation Systems had to integrate atotal of 40,000 control system sig-nals to enable smooth operationsfrom the operations control centre.Hence, during peak periods, up to1,500 staff were employed there onsite.

Know-how as a CatalyserTurnkey Experience Saves Time

Siemens’ many years of know-how insystem integration and project man-agement as well as its experience

gained in earlier turnkey projects inBangkok and Kuala Lumpur were thedecisive conditions for on-scheduleimplementation of this mass transitproject in record time and rapid set-up of the servicing organisation. In particular, the take-over of experi-enced staff from the Skytrain Projectproved to be a very important factor. With about 450 specialists from ser-vicing for the MRTA (Mass Rapid Tran-sit Authority) and Skytrain Projects,Siemens has a considerable know-how potential in this part of the con-tinent. Close and excellent cooper-ation with the local installation teamalso contributed to the work beingspeeded up.

Once again, Siemens TransportationSystems Turnkey Systems has de-monstrated its leading role as a specialist for project managementand system integration.

Engineering for the Blue Line

Tailor-made SolutionsSiemens Signalling and ControlSystems

The Blue Line’s safety and punc-tuality are guaranteed by signalling and control systems from SiemensTransportation Systems. The pro-ject imposed particularly stringentrequirements on train control, theoutdoor equipment and train radio. The underground metro in Bangkokruns in two parallel 20 km tunnels. There is also an above-ground depotwhich is prepared to accommodateabout 84 six-car trains. Six Sicas®interlockings are responsible for fail-safe control of the points and sig-nals. The interlockings themselvesare controlled and operated via theVicos® OC 501 operations controlsystem. Local operator consoles arealso provided for each line inter-locking in accordance with the prin-ciple of double safety.

Spot-on at StopsTrain Control with LZB 700

Train control and train braking pre-cision are particularly demandingaspects. The use of platform screendoors entails a stopping precision of99.9% on the Blue Line.

The LZB 700 M continuous auto-matic train control system controlsthe trains so that they stop right atthe automatically opening doors.Siemens also had to create new inter-faces for the outdoor equipment for the existing infrastructure since, when the project was taken over, thetunnels and part of the trackwork hadalready been completed but not de-signed for Siemens technology.

S 140 signals and S 700 K pointmachines are used. Track vacancydetection is performed by FTG Saudio-frequency track circuits alongthe line and by 60 Hz track circuits inthe depot. The components whichhave already been used for theSkytrain Project in Bangkok are con-sidered to be “proven standard” inThailand.

Audio-visual NetworkTelecommunications

The task for the Blue Line’s telecom-munication system was to establish a network of audio-visual links ne-cessary for the provision of transportservices to supply information to thepublic and to guarantee a high levelof control and passenger safety atstations and on trains. Siemens imple-mented a CCTV platform surveillancesystem, the public announcementsystem, a transmission network anddigital voice radio throughout thenetwork. The radio system carries not only voice data but also trainnumber data to the Vicos® OC 501control system and train fault indi-cations. This means that additionaltrackside cables for train numbertransmission are superfluous.

Monitoring and ControlThe Scada System

The Scada system controls and monitors the power supply, platformscreen doors, fire alarm facilities, lifts and escalators, fault indicationdisplays and ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

Hence, in both emergencies anddaily operation, multi-system com-munications ensure safety and evenmore passenger convenience.

LiveRailway Power Supply

At the beginning of 2003, the firsttwo high-voltage main substationswere connected to the mains. Fivemonths later, all 58 substations wereconnected. They supply power to the stations, the workshop and theoperations control centre. In time for starting train operation in November2003, the 14 rectifier substationsconnected the conductor rails to thepower supply. In order to comply withthis tight time schedule, Siemensattached importance to airfreightand to a high level of the involve-ment of regional production plants.Thai companies worked closelytogether with the Bangkok projectmanagement team.

19 Three-car Metro TrainsRolling Stock Construction

Siemens took on the job of manufac-turing a total of 19 three-car metrotrains. The operator BMCL emphasisedboth safety and comfort. The rollingstock is made of stainless steel in theconfiguration MC+T+MC, based onthe modular Mo.Mo metro conceptwhich enables trains to be optimallyadjusted to specific customer require-ments.

The trains with their modern, attrac-tive design are capable of carrying atotal of 886 passengers each, withseating for 126 and standing roomfor 760. Passengers can move freelyfrom one car to another, and thetrains reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The digital train radiosystem transmits not only the trainnumber data but also voice commu-nications and CCTV images of thestation platform prior to each trainentering the station.

In view of the prevailing high tem-peratures and humidity levels, thehigh-performance air-conditioningsystem has proved to be particularlyeffective. Siemens TransportationSystems has manufactured all therolling stock both for the Blue Lineand for the Skytrain.

Attractive, Safe and Cost-effective

Modern Metro for Bangkok

Service for Punctual and ReliableTrainsDepot and Workshop Equipment

The operational and technical avail-ability of all components within therail system, in fact the efficiency ofoverall operations, is a direct func-tion of the quality and efficiency ofthe depot and workshops.

Thanks to its years of experience andits broad basis of expertise, SiemensTransportation Systems has met thechallenging demands involved. It ison this basis that the depots andworkshops have been planned fromtop to bottom, guaranteeing theavailability and punctuality whichpassengers expect from the oper-ator.

In Focus: Convenience and SafetyStations and Platform Screen Doors

The generously designed under-ground stations on three to fourlevels are air-conditioned and con-veniently fitted with a total of 250escalators and lifts. All entrances are located 1 m above the highest-ever measured flooding level of thecity. They are also provided with port-able barriers as protection againstflooding during the rainy season.

Platform screen doors provide pas-senger safety and support the air-conditioning system. They preventpassengers from entering the trackarea on the one hand and, on theother hand, stop the cooled air fromescaping from the air-conditionedstations into the metro tunnel. Theplatform screen doors always remainclosed until the train has reach itscorrect position. Platform screen dooroperation is interfaced with the cor-responding train doors via signallinginterfaces. The minimised distancebetween platform screen doors andtrain doors prevents passengers frombecoming trapped between the twosets of doors.

Perfectly NetworkedFare Management System

The Automatic Fare Collection (AFC)system provides a convenient meansfor the operator to automaticallyregulate and collect passenger fares. It uses a distance-based graduatedfare structure, contactless smartcards / tokens containing radio-frequency transceivers as fare mediaand automatic barriers that can readand re-encode the fare media to control passenger entry and exit.

In order to speed up passenger flowinto and out of the stations, the auto-matic gates are fitted with bi-partingleaf flaps and divided into banks of“entry only” and “exit only” gates.Equipment to supervise, control and monitor the AFC equipment isprovided in the form of station com-puters and station cash office moni-toring terminals connected to thegates, the token vending machines(for single journeys) and the ticketoffice machines (for multi-journeysmart cards) via local area networks. The whole system is controlled by acentral computer system located atthe operations control centre whichprovides all necessary managementreports and links up to the stationsvia the metro’s main fibre-optic back-bone transmission system.

Comprehensive Support for theCustomerTraining, Servicing, Maintenance

In addition to the entire scope of railway engineering, Siemens alsotrained BMCL’s more than 700 staffusing precise training schedules. Forthis purpose, a total of 40 rooms wasavailable. In addition, 180 staff weretrained for Siemens’ own servicingteam.

The scope of services for the Bangkok metro system also includesoperational support for one and ahalf years as well as servicing andmaintenance for the next ten years.

Drawing on the experience gainedwith earlier comparable projectswhich were implemented both fastand reliably, Siemens TransportationSystems has once more been able to

demonstrate its capability and com-prehensive competence in turnkeyprojects in implementing the BlueLine Project in Bangkok.

The depot comprises a concrete plat-form with the necessary infrastruc-ture providing access, security andlandscaping, stabling facilities, trainwashing plant, test track and depotbuildings. The main workshop build-ing comprises tracks equipped forrolling-stock maintenance and com-ponent exchange, facilities for ma-terial supply and specialised work-shops for the equipment installed. These facilities are equipped for theinitial system allowing for an expan-sion of capacity to maintain a fleetcomprising up to 84 six-car trains.
