What is community service?

Community service is donated (not paid) service or activity that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the community.

Which activities are NOT community service?

• Fundraising for a church or school club• Working for free at a store• Babysitting for free for family• Helping a relative fix a car

Community service is helping in the community. It includes not for profit activities BUT not for your family, friends or relatives.

What is Step 1?The first step is to explore what type of community service you want to do. Here are some samples of community service opportunities you can do:• Cleaning a park• Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture• Getting involved with Habitat for Humanity• Volunteering at your elementary school• Helping the elderly in nursing homes• Volunteering at the Veterans Hospital• Helping out at a local library by shelving and putting books in order• Tutoring elementary school children• Serving food at a food bank• Help with hands-on activities at the Science Center

What is step 2?You must contact an organization to find the one that fits you. You may also research organizations on the Internet. Here are some ideas to help you.• Arizona Science Center 602 716 2037– Gallery assistant, class assistant, greeters
