BArTIIOLOME«’S HOSPITAL AND COLLEGE.-The clinical practice of the hospital comprises a service of 750 beds, of which 676 are in the hospital at Smithfield, and 75 are for convalescent patients at Swanley. Eight house physicians, ten house surgeons, and a mid- wifery assistant are appointed annually, each of them hold- ing office for one year, and provided wibh rooms by the hospital authorities. The ophthalmic house surgeon is appointed for six months, and is eligible for re election for a second term of six months. The senior assistant chloro- formist and junior assistant chloroformist ’are appointed annually, and are provided with rooms. Two qualified assistant electricians are appointed every three months. No fee is paid for any of these appointments, and each receives a salary of E25. The clinical clerks, the obstetric clerks, the clerks to the medical out-patients, the dressers to the surgical out-patients, and the dressers in the special depart- ments are chosen from the diligent students. Forty ward dresserships are given annually to the students who pass the best examination in the subjects of study of the first year. Other ward dresserships may be obtained by payment of the usual fees. A college is attached to the hospital, in which students can reside, subject to the college regulations. Foundation and other Prizes.-Two Open Scholarships in Science of the value of ;f65 each, tenable for one year, will be competed for in September. Candidates must not be more than twenty-five years of age, and must not have entered to the medical or surgical practice of any metro- politan medical school. The subjects of examination are Physics and Chemistry for one, Physiology and Biology for the uther.—Two Junior Open Scholarships, one of £130 and one of E50, in the subjects of the Preliminary Scientific- Examination of the London University, v ill be competed for at the same time. Candidates must be under twenty years of age, and must become regular students.--The Jeaffreson Exhibition, of the value of E20, is awarded at entrance after examination in the subjects of general education. It is now an Open Exhibition.-ASeniorScholarship, £50, in Anatomy, Physiology, and Chemistry.—Kirke’s Scholarship and Gold Medal in Clinical Medicine, value 40 guineas.—Lawrence Scholarship and Gold Medal, of the value of 40 guineas (founded in 1873 by the family of the late Sir William Lawrence).-Two Brackenbury Scholarships in Medicine and Surgery, E30 each.-Four Junior Scholarships in the subjects of study of the first year : 1st, £40; 2nd, £30 ; 3rd, £20; 4th, £10. A prize of £15 for Anatomy has been founded by the late Mr. Henry Skynner in memory of his brother ; a Scholarship of 50 confined to Cambridge graduates in Arts, by Miss Shuter in memory of her brother, formerly assistant surgeon to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital; and a prize of f: 10 10s. by SirF. A. Burrows, Bart., in memory of his father, Sir George Burrows. - CHARING-CROSS HOSPITAL AND COLLEGE.-Total fees, E94 10s. if paid in a single sum on entry, or 9105 if paid in five instalments ; for Dental students, 156 14s., or 60 guineas in two equal instalments. General students pay proportionately lower fees, and are admitted without additional fee to the courses of Clinical Medicine and Surgery and to the practice of the Royal Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital. They alone are entitled to compete for the Scholarships, Gold Medal, and Pereira Prize, excepting the Golding Scholarship of £15, for which Dental students can also compete. Two Entrance Scholarships, of the value of 100 guineas and 50 guineas respectively, are awarded annually at the commencement of each winter session after a com- petitive examination in the following groups of subjects:- (1) English, including Language, Literature. History, and Geography; (2) Latin and Greek ; (3) French and German ; (4) Mathematics, including Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry; and Mechanics, including Statics and Dynamics ; (5) Chemistry (Inorganic) and Physic?, in- cluding Acoustics, Heat, and Electricity; and (6) Animal and Vegetable Biology. The value attached to each group of subjects is 1000 marks. No candidate may offer him- self for examination in more than three of the above groups of subjects, the selection of the groups being left entirely to the candidate. The Scholarships will be awarded by the School Committee to the two candidates who, on the report of the examiners, have shown the highest degree of excellence; but no Scholarship will be awarded unless, in the opinion of the examiners, a satisfactory standard has been attained. In the firsb four groups the subjects (as regards extent and the authors selected) will be the same as those chosen for the Matriculation Examination of the University of London in the June immediately preceding; in the fifth and sixth, the same as those for the Preliminary Scientific Examination of the same University. Candi- . dates must give notice to the Librarian of their intention . to compete, and of the groups in which they offer them- selves for examination, on or before Saturday, Sept. 19th, 1891. The examination will commence at the School on Monday, Sppt. 21st, at 10 A.M. The successful candidates will be required to enter forthwith for their complete medical education at Charing-cross Hospital. , A Scholarship of the value of 50 guineas is open to B students from the University of Oxford who have passed - the First M. for the best clinical reports. The Governor’s Gold Medal isgiven for excellence in clinical work. Silver or BronzeMedals, or an equivalent in Books, are awarded to the mostdistinguished students in all classes; and special prizes inthe classes of Dental Surgery, Pathology, and PracticalHistology. In consequence of the larger number of studentsyear by year joining the school, it was found necessary, in1889, to increase the accommodation for practical instruc-tion. The adjoining premises were therefore acquired, andon the space thus gained there have now been erectednew buildings, including Physiological and PathologicalLaboratories, Materia Medica Museum, and AnatomicalTheatre. The existing Dissecting-room and the ChemicalTheatre have been enlarged. A larger and better lightedroom has been provided for the Pathological Museum, andthe space thus set free has been devoted partly to enlarge-ment of the Library, but chiefly to the providing ot a

reading-room for the Students’ Club.

ST. GEORGE’S HOSPITAL.-Perpetual pupils, by paymentof fl30 in three instalments, or 9125 in one sum, are entitledto admission to the medical and surgical practice; to com-pete for prizes and exhibitions; to hold the appointmentsof house physician and house surgeon, assistant house

physician and assistant house surgeon, ophthalmic assistant,registrar’s assistant, and to become clinical clerks for twoperiods of three months each, and dressers for similar periods,

Ifree of any charge. Gentlemen are admitted to the hospital Ipractice and lectures required by the College of Physicians Iand Surgeons and the Society of Apothecaries on paymentof f45 at the commencement of the first year of study,U5 at the commencement of the second year of study, £ 20for the third, and E20 for each subsequent year of attend-ance. On payment of the third instalment the pupil maybecome perpetual, provided that the Dean can certify thathis conduct has been satisfactory. These payments entitlethe pupil to hold the offices of clinical clerk and dresser forthree months each, and to become a candidate for the officesof house physician and house surgeon. Perpetual pupilsare eligible for the offices of curator of the museum, medicaland surgical registrar, demonstrator of anatomy, andobstetric assistant. These are all salaried offices. Theobstetric assistant is resident, with a salary of 100.Entrance Scholarships.-:B125, open to sons of medical

men; two of :B50 each, open to all students commencingtheir medical studies ; two of E65 each, open to studentswho have been signed up for or passed the Oxford First M. B.or Cambridge Second M.B.Prizes.-The William Brown Exhibition of £ 100 per

annum, tenable for two years, open to any perpetual pupilof St. George’s who is under twenty-five years of age, andwho shall have obtained a diploma or licence entitling himto be registered as a practitioner of medicine or surgery inEngland within two years previously to the period fixed forthe examination (July). The examination is to test theproficiency of the candidate in Medicine, Midwifery, andSurgery, including Ophthalmic Surgery.-The WilliamBrown Exhibition of E40 per annum, tenable for threeyears, for general fitness for the exercise of the medicalprofession and for moral conduct, open to perpetual pupilsin their fourth year of study.-Sir Charles Ciarke’s Prize(interest of E200 consols) for good conduct and for clinicalwork rendered in the service of the hospital ; the Bracken-bury Prize in Medicine, value £ 32; the Brackenbury Prizein Surgery, value f,32; the Treasurer’s Prize, :B1O lots. ; theThompson Medal; the Brodie Prize for Clinical Surgery ;the Acland Prize for Clinical Medicine ; the Pollock Prizein Physiology; the Henry Charles Johnson Prize inAnatomy ; and General Proficiency Prizes, value:BlO 10s.each, for students of each year.

GUY’S HOSPITAL. - Appointments: House physicians,house surgeons, assistant house physicians and assistanthouse surgeons, obstetric residents, clinical assistants,surgeons’ and assistant surgeons’ dressers, surgical wardclerks, clinical clerks, post-mortem clerks, extern obstetricattendants, and dressers and clerks in the special depart-ments, are appointed from among the students, upon therecommendation of the medical staff, according to merit,and without extra payment. The house physicians, ofwhom there are four, hold office for six months each. Theassistant house physician attends in the Out-patient Depart-ment four afternoons in the week, and sees all the cases

not seen by the assistant physician of the day. The housephysicians have the care of the patients in the medicalwards, and attend to all emergencies arising in the absenceof the physicians. They hold office for six months, and areprovided with board and lodging in the college free ofexpense. The house surgeons, of whom there are four, holdoffice for six months each, and are provided with board andlodging in the college free of expense. The SurgicalCasualty Department is in charge of two assistant housesurgeons. The surgeons’ dressers are selected from thosestudents who have completed their third winter session, andhave been most diligent in the junior appointments. Theyhold office for three or six months. Six are attachedto each surgeon, and during their weeks of special dutythey are provided with board and lodging in the hospitalfree of expense. The obstetric residents, two in number,are provided with board and lodging in the hospital free ofexpense.

The examinationbegins on Thursday, Sept. 24th -First-year students: Firstprize f50, second prize f25, for Anatomy, Physiology, andChemistry ; the Arthur Durham prize for Dissection, f5to first-year students, JE15 to those of later years -Forsecond-year students : First prize .625, second prize :&bgr;1O, forAnatomy, Physiology, and Materia Medica. The SandsCox Scholarship of :&bgr;15 (tenable for three years) for Physio-logy. The Michael Harris prize of £ 10 for Anatomy.-For third-year students : First prize jE25, second prize EIO,for Medical and Surgical Anatomy, Midwifery, and Thera-peutics.-For fourth-year students: First prize jE25, second

prize .610, for Medicine, Surgery, Midwifery, and MedicalJurisprudence. The Golding Bird prize of 933 for Methodsof Diagnosis in Disease. - For senior students : TheTreasurer’s Gold Medal for Clinical Medicine; the Treasurer’sGold Medal for Clinical Surgery; the Gurney Hoare Prize ofE25 for Clinical Reports and Commentaries; and the Beaneyprize of 30 guineas for Pathology. The Physical Societyawards a prize of f5 to the author of the best Essay on aselected subject ; a prize of ;C7 for the best paper read beforethe Society, and two prizes of 4 to the members who havemost distinguished themselves in the debates of the session.Fees.-l. A perpetual ticket, including admission to

lectures, demonstrations, and hospital practice, competitionfor prizes, and eligibility for hospital appointments, may beobtained-(a) by the payment of 125 guineas on entrance;(b) by two payments of jE66, one on entrance, the other atthe commencement of the ensuing session; (e) by the pay-ment of three annual instalments, at the commencement ofeach academical year; first year, 50; second year, C50 ;third year, f37 10s. 2. A reduction is made in the fees fora perpetual ticket in the case of students who have spentone or more years at another medical school. Studentsentering as second-year students are charged for their firstyear at Guy’s Hospital, f50; second year, f4:0; third year,j620; or 95 guineas in one sum on entrance. Studentsentering as third-year students are charged for their firstyear at Guy’s Hospital, f50; second year, E20; or 65 guineasm one sum on entrance. This fee is payable by Cambridgestudents who have passed both parts of the Second M.B.Examination.If The College.-The College stands upon a site fronting theeast gate of the hospital, and is connected with it by asubway. The building has been planned to serve as aResidential College for Students, and at the same time toprovide accommodation for the Students’ Club.

KING’S COLLEGE. - The physicians’ assistants, thephysician-accoucheur’s assistant, the ophthalmic clinicalassistant, the senior clerks, and the house surgeons andsenior dressers, are selected by examination from amongthose matriculated students of the College who are pupilsof the hospital. Rooms are provided within the walls ofthe College for the residence of matriculated students.Rooms and commons are provided at the hospital for theresident officers free of charge.

The United Kingdom Branch of the NationalAssociation for Supplying Female Medical Aid to theWomen of India also provides funds for the Dufferin andJubilee Scholarships, each of the value of &pound;25 a year, atthe School, to students who will enter into a legal arrange-ment to practise in India under the Countess of Dufferin’sFund on the completion of their course of study. ThreeScholarships, each of the value of &pound;100 a year for threeyears, will be offered yearly to girls under nineteen yearsof age on the first day of the examination, whose parentsreside within the metropolitan area as defined in the Ele-mentary Education Act, by the trustees of the St. Dunstan’scharities. The holders must fit themselves for the practiceof a profession, medical or otherwise. The Scholarshipfwill be tenable at any place of higher education approvedby the governors. The Helen Prideaux Memorial Fund(&pound;505) has been invested, and the income derived from iiwill be given as a prize every second or third year to agraduate of the School, for the further prosecution of he]medical studies, at the discretion of the trustees.
