1998-2013Happy 15th Anniversary!

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since weopened the doors of Meyers Auto Tech. Do youremember the old two-bay shop down at theRichland “Y”? Seems like a distant memory. We’vecome a long way since then and been so blessedby the Lord and our wonderful customers!

There are a number of causes of vibrations in the steeringcolumn—bent rims, bad CV joints, a busted motor mount, loose lug nuts—but when it only happens while braking, there’sone prime suspect: your brake rotors.

Rotors are discs that your brake pads clamp down on inorder to slow down or stop your car. When braking, rotors areexposed to tremendous friction and heat, which will wear themdown over time. The metal may thin out and become uneven orwarped in some spots. When the brake pads grip these now-uneven surfaces at high speeds, the imperfections cause arumbling in the brake pedal that can also be felt through thesteering wheel.

It’s best to bring your car to us as soon as you can if yourbrakes make your steering wheel shiver. Chronic vibrations cancause calipers, bolts, brake pads, and other components of yourbrake system to loosen or wear out more quickly. A relativelysmall bill can balloon in a hurry.

At our shop, we can diagnose warped rotors by spinning therotors and feeling for imperfections. Occasionally, rough spotscan be “shaved” to even out the surface (“turning” the rotors). Many times, however, this will not be cost-effective, and lessmetal means an increased chance of rewarping. It’s commonpractice to replace rotors and brake pads at the same time. Ifyou’re lucky, tightening of the rotors may be all that’s needed tofix the problem.

Don’t mess with your brakes. Call us today if they give youthe shakes.
