Abstract: The International Society ofLife Inforrnation Science (ISLIS) and the Japan Instituteof Hypnosis (JIH) attempted collaboratively to compare physiological data during hypnosis and
qigong. The authors report the results of electrodermal activity (EDA) and photoplethysmogram(PPG) during an image recall experiment in the hypnotic state and in statie qigong (Shinki-unko-ho in Japanese; Zhengi yunringtfa in Chinese). Subjects of the qigong experiment imaged "qi"
and imagined its control inside their bodies. A subject ofthe hypnosis experiment was led into amedium (perceptual) hypnotic state, then he tried to fbrm the image of a target Chinesecharacter printed on a paper which was fblded and then rolled into a ball with plastic clay to
prevent its being opened. EDA [ p S] and beat rate of PPG [bpm] declined after the start of
qigong and rose 2 minutes befbre its end. EDA had positive relationships with PPG in bothqigong and hypnosis; r
=
O.83 (p < O.OOI) in qigong; r = O.62 (p < O.OOI) in hypnosis. Also,
there was a negative relationship in the medium hypnotic stage during hypnotic induction; r =
-O.47 ip < O,05).Keyvvords: medium hypnosis, image recall, electrodermal activity (EDA), exosomatic

1. Introduction
When the International Society of LifeInformation Scienee (ISLIS) and the Japan Institute
of Hypnosis (JIH) had a joint meeting, the
organizers planned a mini symposium to discuss
physiological data of qigong and hypnosisi). Three
experiments were executed at Tbkyo Denki
University (TDU), Tlokyo Institute of [Eechnology
(TIT) and National Institute of Radiological
Sciences (NIRS) with collaboration between a
hypnotist of JIH and experimenters of ISLIS, The
authors describe their results here on image recall
in a hypnotic state,

There are reports and reyiews that hypnosiscan produce peninent conditions to perfbrmanomalous cognition24). Therefbre, the authors
gave a subject in the hypnotic state the task that heattempt to make a visual image corresponding to a
target Chinese character printed on a fblded and

arousal level, and photoplethysmogram (PPG) wereanalyzed in this paper. The authors chose a static
qigong method (Shinki-unko-ho in Japanese;ZhengivunrcingtX2i in Chinese) for comparing with
hypnotic data. This method was chosen becausetrainees meditate quietly while seated on a chaig

2. Method
2.1 ProcedureofHypnosisExperiment
The hypnosis experiment was done at the Bio-Emission Laboratory, NIRS, on April 23rd, 1999,
The subject was a healthy male student, aged 21
and not psychic, who had already been a subject in
other hypnosis experiments at TDU and TIT, The
subject sat quietly on a chair during the experiment,
The subjeet was preliminarily induced into a
medium hypnotic state for ease of hypnoticinduction during measurement, then he was woken
once and experimenters attached electrodes fbr
EDA, PGq EEG etc. to him. Electrodes fbr EDA
were attached on the tips of second and fourth
fingers of the subject's left hand, then his skin
conductance was measured with the MPIOOWS
(Biopack Systems, Inc.) using an exosomatic
method (DC O.5V constant; sampling rate, 200Hz).
PPG was measured by the same instrument. The
sensor fbr PPG was set on the third finger of the
subject's left hand. The whole process of the
experiment was recorded by video cameras.
At first, in the experiment, subject's data
during rest were obtained; 2 minutes with closed
eyes and 2 minutes with open eyes, Second, the
subject was induced into the medium hypnotic state,
taking 16 minutes. Next, the hypnotist gave the
subject a task-suggestion, taking approximately 6
minutes, during that time the subject's sense of the
left hand became more sensitiye and he could
perceive yarious stimulations, Then, the target was
put on his left palm (the first trial), The target was a
Chinese character (Kartii character) printed on a
3cm-square white paper, which had been fblded and
covered by a ball of plastic clay. The clay ball had a
diameter of about 1 cm. As this clay hardened after
fbrming, it would be dithcult to see the paperwithout breaking the clay ball. A few hundred
targets were prepared by someone other than the
experimenters and the subject. The experimenters
took a random 200 targets and put them into a
package, which they kept in a small safe, At the
trial, one experimenter took the package out of the
safe, and chose a target at random after shaking the
39
package, The target was passed to the hypnotist,
who put it on the subject's left palm. The subject
signed by a slight movement ofhis fingers when he
succeeded in fbrming a yisual image of the
character. After the subject wrote his answer on a
paper, the target and answer were checked
immediately. Next, the subject was given again the
task-suggestion during approximately 3 minutes fbr
the second trial, Subject's imaging time was
approximately 10 minutes in the first trial and
approximately 12 minutes in the second. During
each trial, the hypnotist repeated the task-
suggestion and gave the same target to the subject
many times until the subject made an image.
The subject was wakened after the second trial,
then post-rest data were gained; 2 minutes with
open eyes and 2 minutes with closed eyes.
2.2 ProcedureofQigongExperiment
The qigong experiment was canied out by the
authors at the Shanghai Qigong Institute on
November 4th, 1997. Subjects were four trainees
who had practiced qigong (Shinki-unko-ho) almost
every day fbr 2.5-4 years, However, in this papegonly three subjects' data were analyzed beeause the
other one needed correction. These three subjects
were a female (A, aged 62) and two males (B, C,aged 72 and 73).
While seated quietly on a chair, the subjects
practiced qigong, with the eyes closed, for 20
minutes continuously. Subjects tried to control their
posture, breathing and mind states during qigong, moreover they meditated that "qi"
moved inside
their bodies, Experimental measurement instru-
ments during qigong were the same as fbr hypnosis,
After setting the electrodes, subjects' data were
measured during pre-rest (3 minutes with closed
eyes and 2 minutes with open eyes), 20-minute
qigong and post-rest (3 minutes with closed eyes).
3. Results
The 1-minute EDA average was calculated
after re-sampling at a rate of 5 points!s. The l-
minute PPG average was eomputed on beat peraminute [bpm],

3.1 ImageRecallinHypnosisExperiment
Fig. 1 shows targets and responses of the firstand second trials. There was no similarity between
the targets and responses in this experiment.
3.2 EDAandPPGinHypnosisExperiment
Figs. 2 and 3 show the level of EDA and the
beat rate of PPG with time during the hypnosis
experiment, The biank in the latter half of the
second trial in both figures was caused by the
experimenters seuing instruments to measure fbronly one houn
PPG was stable at 80-83bpm befbre the
experiment, but changed widely after its start. PPG
rose and often exceeded 90bpm during the imagingtask.
EDA was stable around 5uS before the
experiment, then rose to approximately 6u S when
it started. EDA declined to nearly 4uS during
closed eyes rest and rose again to about 6pt S
during open eyes rest.
During hypnotic induction, at first EDAdropped to 4 u S (Point A in Fig. 2), next rose to 6,5
p S in the light hypnotic stage (catalepsy of fingersand right arm; Point B in Fig. 2), then remained
around 6uS when the subject showed gloveanesthesia. Point C in Fig. 2 was a response when
the hypnotist gave the subject a sharp pinch on the
backside of the right hand. Point D in Fig. 2 was a
response when the subject was given a negativesuggestion which he could not remember his ownname. FinallM the EDA was stable at approximately
4" S.
EDA rose to 5.5uS when the subject was
given the task-suggestion, then rose more on
receiving notice of a target. Moreover it reached 8.5
u S when given the target actually (Point E in Fig.2). After that, EDA was stable around 6.5 ll S.During the second trial, EDA rose to 8 " S on beingpassed a target (Point F in Fig. 2), then droppedonce, befbre rising gradually and reaching 9 u S,
After the tasks, EDA dropped from 8uS to
about 6 u S during open eyes and closed eyes rests,
Point G in Fig. 2 shows response corresponding to
when a sharp pinch was given on the backside of
the subje¢t's right hand in the arousal state.
3.3 EDAandPPGinQigongExperiment
Figs. 4 and 5 show logarithms of ratios fbr
initial values of pre-rest of both EDA and PPG.Subjects A and B, who had relatively longexperience with qigong, showed smooth reclining
curyes during qigong. Both EDA and PPG averages
of the three subjects declined at the start of qigongand rose 2 minutes befbre finishing,
3.4 CerrelationbetweenEDAandPPG
Fig. 6 shows logarithms of ratios for initialvalues of experimenta1 interval (except pre-rest and
post-rest) on both EDA and PPG There were
positive relationships between EDA and PP6; r =
O,83 (p < O.OO1, both tails) in qigong; r = O.62 (p <
O.OOI, both tails) in hypnosis. During hypnoticinduction (Fig. 7), there was a negative relationship
between EDA and PPG at the transient stage ofmedium hypnosis; r =
-O.47 (p < O.05, both tails),
4. Discussion
In the qigong experimeng both EDA and PPGaverages declined at the start of qigong; especiallyfbr the two subjects, who had relatiyely long
experience, the curves were smooth. The rise 2minutes befbre finish is considered a psychologicaleffect depending on the end of practice.
While there are changes of physiological datafbr example EEGS), depends on length of practice, and EDA data are suggested to change too. Theauthors will report EEG data in another article6).
In both qigong and hypnosis, PPGs have a
positive re1ationship with EDA (Fig. 6), However, the range of PPG data in hypnosis was 2 timeswider than that in qigong. The reason for this
difTerence is considered as related to tasks ehiefly.
The negative relationship at the medium hypnoticstage during induction (Fig. 7) is interesting, butthe authors could not conclude whether it was
caused by the subject's personality or a property of
the hypnotic induction.
GenerallM psycho-physiotogical researeh on
images presents dithculties; for example, images orthe process of forming images can not be observedby the experimenters objectively. In this hypnosis

experiment, the subject needed more than 10
minutes to respond although it is suggested that the
subject made effbrts to execute the task because
both EDA and PPG showed higher levels during the
task. Therefore, the authors consider that imageforming was diMcult in this experiment.
Through a meta-analysis fbr ESP experiments
with hypnosis, Stanford and Stein7} note, while
some studies claim that hypnosis causes a high
score in ESP experiments, other studies claim no
obvious difference of ESP score between hypnotic
and arousal states, but this contradiction can not be
explained by contemporary knowledge, In addition,
they mention that the experimenta1 database fbr
meta-analysis is too small to discover effective
conditions or factors even if there are a few cases
under which experimental conditions of hypnosis
are occasionally adequate for psi or if there are
characteristic personalities which are sensitive to
hypnosis. Historically, researchers often reported
remarkable cases in which hypnosis induced an
anomalous cogriition, but the role and mechanism
of hypnosis are not well-known scientifically yet.Therefbre, further studies are needed.
