GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Solar water heating system works on alternative energy sources. The
term "alternative energy"
(also: renewable energy) encompasses a variety of energy generation
sources. Generally, it refers to the
energy derived from "renewable" resources such as solar or wind
energy. The most common forms of
alternative energy available for homeowner use today are solar
power.
The benefits of using solar power as renewable energy sources are
considerable. From an
environmental standpoint the solar power is all non-emission power
sources. Unlike coal combustion
power plants, no harmful exhaust is produced when using solar
energy products.
In addition to the lack of emissions and waste products, no
valuable resources are "used up"
with the system which runs on solar power. If every home on earth
were equipped with such alternative
energy products, it would be a greener and healthier world.
SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEM FUNCTIONING
(THERMOSYPHON PRINCIPLE)
Thermosyphon Principle: Solar Water Heating System works on
Thermosyphon principle. The principle is
that cold water has a higher specific density than warm water, and
so being heavier will be at bottom.
Thus, cold water will sink down in the container and hot water will
float upper side.
Glass Tubes: The evacuated tube consists are made out of
two concentric glass tubes, fused on one side and
hermetically sealed with each other on the other side. The
internal glass tube is coated with highly observing
environmental friendly coating to trap the solar energy. The
sunlight radiation falls on the glass tube passes through
external glass tube and absorbed by the multi layer coating
on internal glass tube and converted into heat. This heats up
the water contained in the inner glass tube. The heated
water starts rising through the tube due to ‘Thermosyphon’
(natural circulation) effect eventually travels towards the
top
storage tank. Simultaneously cold water from the tank descends to
the tube, gets heated in the
absorber and rises back to the tank. The cycle keeps
repeating.
COMPONENTS OF ‘MG RAMA’ SWH SYSTEM
1) Hot Water Tank
2) Glass Tubes
3) Stands & Accessories
GUIDELINES OF INSTALLATIONS
1. System should be installed nearer to the usage point to reduce
line loss of water
2. Kindly ensure continuous solar radiation availability to the
system. It is advisable that the system
should be installed south facing as in India better quality solar
radiation is available in the south
direction.
3. System should be kept in shadow free area, any structure or item
should not obstruct the direct
sunlight on the tubes.
4. Provide proper foundation to the legs of stand. Grouting the
foot of the system by cement
should be done.
5. All open portions of storage tank and piping must be insulated
property to prevent heat loss.
6. Use only recommended pipe size for outflow of hot water.
Preferably small diameter &
insulated for hot water output.
7. The usage of check valve and non return valve is advisable in
pipe fitting.
8. If the tank is empty, cold water should be allowed to the tank
only when the system is cool i.e.
in early morning or in the evening time.
9. Electric backup heater requires single phase electric
line.
10. Advisable water pressure;
b. For Pressurized System : 3.0 Kg / cm 2
11. It is advisable to attach additional cold water storage thank
in case of over head tank height is
more than 10 feet from system tank.
12. For automatic motor filling installation, overhead tank is
necessary.
Take care about;
- If electric backup heater is connected to the system (optional),
kindly ensure that ELCB must be
used for safety purpose.
- Hot water of the system is not recommended for edible
purpose.
- Keep the children away from the system.
MAINTENANCE
- For better result keep the glass tubes clean.
- Cleaning of the glass tubes should be done only when the system
is cool i.e. in early morning or
in evening.
- If the system will not be in use for long time, cover the glass
tubes with cotton cloth.
SOME DOs AND DON’Ts
Do’s
- The use of hot water should be in morning time within one or two
hour span.
- You can cover half of the glass tubes in summer season to escape
from overheating of water.
- Ensure that the gate valve provided in the cold water line is
always open.
Don’ts
- Cold water tank should never run dry (for overhead tank
fitting).
- System should never run out of water (for parallel tank
fitting).
- Do not touch or replace the tubes when the system is hot.
