This practice opportunity was a perfect fit for us. It was the right size of community; has warm, welcoming residents; and it’s a beautiful place to live.” The Henleys moved their two children, Kate, 3, and John, 1, to Milford at Christmastime and Dr. Henley began his practice at the Milford Family Medical Center on January 11 th . Prior to their move, he was a family and obstetric physician in Estherville, Iowa, working at a critical access hospital and clinic. Following his graduation from Millard South High School in Omaha, Dr. Henley completed his undergraduate degree in biotechnology with a minor in chemistry at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, then completed his Family Practice residency with the Nebraska Medical Center-Clarkson Family Medicine Program. He explains that by today’s standards, medical training for a D.O. vs. M.D. is comparable. His program required extra training on the musculoskeletal system, “but our training is otherwise very similar.” Board certified in Family Practice, Dr. Henley has a special interest in obstetrics, nutrition, preventative care, orthopedics/musculoskeletal, and behavioral health. It was because of a memorable experience as a medical student, that he chose Family Practice as his specialty. “One of my rotations was with a rural solo physician and I enjoyed that experience so much I asked to return during an elective rotation.” He adds, “It was the kind of private practice style I was looking for. A sparkling, friendly woman with a ready smile, Emma Lutringer grins when she compares raising her five children to how it’s done now. “No internet, no car seats – goodness, it’s amazing that they grew up at all!” But grew up they did. Emma beams with joy when she mentions her 20+ grandchildren and 20+ great grandchildren.

Emma has felt blessed to have good health throughout most of her life. She worked for 30 years at the Concordia Bookstore, all while raising a family. Her husband, Tony, was a long time employee of Southeast Community College who suffered complications during heart surgery leaving him unable to work. Emma cared for him at home for 19 years before he passed away four years ago. “My good health allowed me to take care of him and also work; for that I have always felt so blessed.”

However, not long after his passing and after undergoing surgery, Emma was treated for two blood clots in her lungs. To strengthen her lungs and improve her health, she enrolled and graduated from Memorial Hospital’s pulmonary rehab program feeling much better and remained active for the next two years.

But then she experienced reoccurring episodes of an irregular heart beat that resulted in trips to the emergency department and four hospitalizations. Because her heart couldn’t maintain a healthy rhythm, her heart doctor installed a pacemaker. Cardiac rehabilitation at Memorial Hospital followed to rebuild her heart and her body’s endurance. Emma stuck with the program and graduated from it feeling much stronger and healthier.

“I learned so much from the rehab staff - like how to live healthier and take better care of myself,” says Emma. “The rehab girls were always so nice and encouraging, and they answered all of my many questions.” Upon graduation from the cardiac rehab program Emma knew it was important to continue exercising. “I was feeling so much better and because now I was both a lung and heart patient, I decided to continue on a cardiopulmonary maintenance program where I work with both the cardiac rehab and respiratory therapy staff once a week, just to be sure I stay active.” She adds, “Since I am cardiopulmonary patient, I need to work on keeping both my heart and lungs strong.”

Emma appreciates the recently opened second floor cardiopulmonary gym with the expansive windows for patients to enjoy. “Some of the newer machines up here are so much easier to operate and I love looking outside – it makes the time go faster and it brings out the farmer in me!”

Emma has very few down times these days. “I know that when I’m active I feel better. I’m so

blessed. I may not be rich in money, but I’m rich in a lot of other ways.”

Emma Lutringer keeps her heart and lungs healthy through regular cardiopulmonary workouts with Memorial Hospital’s Respiratory Therapy and Cardiac Rehab staff.staff.

Katie Kinnett, RN, is the recipient of the 2015 Caring Kind Award. Employed by Memorial Health Care Systems for 7 years, Katie serves patients as a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital.

Katie was honored at the Nebraska Hospital Association’s Annual Conference. Katie (r) is pictured with Judy Bors, Memorial Hospital’s Director of Nursing.

At the annual Memorial Health Care Systems’ Membership Meeting, John L. Hughes was announced as the newly elected Director to the Board, and Tammy Wissing and Donna Havener were re-elected to new terms. Other MHCS Board members are: Steve Kayton, Mike Klintworth, Marlin Pozehl and Jim Swanson.

Memorial Hospital welcomed its first baby of the year on January 4. Weighing 8 lb. 11 oz., healthy and beautiful with a full head of hair, little Lakeyn Ivy Reese Burks was born to parents Treyon and Jordeyn.

Jordeyn, a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital, is grateful for their experience, “We cannot thank everyone at the Hospital and Utica Family Medical Center enough for taking such good care of us! We appre-ciate each and every one of you for making our stay so wonderful. I'm so proud to say I work with such great people!”

The Burks family is pictured with their physician, Dr. Trisha Sams of the Utica Family Medical Center.

Memorial Hospital Update: Project Nears Completion

Memorial Hospital nears the completion of its multi-phased construction project that began in June of 2014. The Hospital’s new radiology addition opened in the summer of 2015 and a grand opening celebration was held last fall for the Memorial Hospital Specialty Services facility which is home to the Specialty Physicians Clinic, cardiopulmonary services, diabetes education, nuclear med, infusion services and aquatic therapy.

The Seward Family Pharmacy renovation wraps up January 18th. The pharmacy relocated temporarily last fall while workers enlarged and enhanced the workspace and customer service area.

Work is underway on the MHCS Laboratory which will result in ample space for new equipment and better efficiency.

Completion of Memorial Hospital’s two-suite sleep study lab is the final step of the construction project. With the capacity to conduct two studies simultaneously, the suites will be beautiful, restive and well-designed for patients and staff. Each room will be equipped with a queen-sized Sleep Number bed and other amenities to make the overnight study as comfortable as possible.
