For InquIrIng MoMs – “How to AccoMplIsH EVErYtHIng”
Friends or family members some-times ask me, “How do you do it? How do you fit it all in? You’re always going places, attending parties, work-ing, cooking, cleaning, creating, and raising successful young adults?” And I wonder, “Do I accomplish any more than anyone else?” Sure, I enjoy plan-ning fun things to do. I work hard, play hard and dream big! Yeah, I try to fit it all in, the whole “kit and caboodle.” Maybe it’s an anxious habit. Maybe I fear a race against time. Whatever the reason, if I’ve got anyone fooled about having it “all together,” then I must ask myself, “How the heck am I pulling this off?”
I’ve decided that I don’t have any more time or energy than anyone else. I’m fairly certain that there are just two reasons why I’m having success with “accomplishment,” through the eyes of my closest friends.
Reason number one – I don’t accomplish everything! I don’t participate in things that I don’t deem priority. I don’t like to watch television, I don’t enjoy talking on the phone, I don’t commute to work, I don’t obligate myself to circumstances that I don’t enjoy. I find that if I’m passion-ate about something, I’m far more likely to be motivated to complete it. I guess I’ve conditioned myself to spend
the time that counts, the “free time,” on the enjoyable. For me, enjoyment comes from organization. I’ll admit, I’m constantly scratching things off a ‘to do’ list.
And reason number two – I constantly work to make things bet-ter. Whether that happens to be a
personal interest story I’m covering for My Hometown Estrella or a new healthy recipe I’m designing or tweaking in my kitchen; I delegate, pri-oritize, write it down, dream about it, and then some-times, when necessary, let the concept go. I’ve learned that nothing works harder for your own cause than you do. Want to accomplish everything? Define your own everything. Set your own foundation. Don’t accomplish “the whole enchilada,” just accomplish what sums up everything for you!
Enjoy this month in Estrella. It’s a month of music – the Symphony’s returning, and a month centered on someone special, Mom. The following pages are filled with information and articles that I think you’ll find both useful and enjoyable.

A Breath of Fresh Air For Teresa Degraff and her daughter Sydnie,
Mother’s Day, and every day, brings hope for breathing fresh air. Sydnie was diagnosed with severe asthma at the age of two. That prognosis has forever changed the lives of the Degraff fam-ily and how they go about day-to-day activities that seem effortless for most of us.
Ten-year-old Sydnie is the youngest of three of the DeGraff children. She has an older broth-er, Austin, 14, and her sister Brenna is 12. At the tender age of one, Sydnie had a couple of bouts with pneumonia which sparked concern with her doctors and led to the severe asthma diagnosis one year later. “We always had to be careful with her during a change of season; each bringing a different concern,” says her mom, Teresa. Spring brings blooming, during the summer its dust storms, fall means dealing with blooming shrubs and plants, and during the win-ter it’s wood burning stoves and wind storms. Her sensitivity to chemicals such as laundry detergent, perfume, hair products and cleaning products is something she deals with every day, no matter what the season. And if a bad ozone day is predicted, Syndie must stay indoors.
Despite the daily obstacles of numerous doctor office visits, dealing with air quality, smells, weather concerns and fatigue, Sydnie’s mom says that Sydnie maintains an upbeat attitude and is almost always on the go. “She is a planner,” says Teresa. “She plans for outings and events for months in advance, often utilizing a checklist. Although we’ve told her many times before that she would make a great event planner, Sydnie has dreams of becoming a fashion designer.”
To keep her asthma under control, she takes daily medications. “She loves to play outside with her friends and ride her bike. However, a lot of things, including any kind of extracurricular activities, have to come in small does for Sydnie,” her mom confided. Even actions that many of her friends participate in routinely, like physical education at school, or dance have to
be carefully planned and monitored and always require an inhaler on hand. When her friends plan sleepovers, their pre-party choices include which movie or pair of pajamas to bring to the party. Sydnie’s overnight bag, on the other hand, contains peak flow meters, medicine, inhaler, and a nebulizer. “We are so blessed that many of the parents of Sydnie’s friends understand her situ-ation and are willing to take responsibility and go the extra mile of having a severe asthmatic, sleepover,” Teresa adds.
The Degraff family grasps at positive ways to deal with their daily obstacles and don’t take asthma lying down. They have been volunteering
with the American Lung Association and walking their Fight For Air walk for three years now. This year, Sydnie was asked to be the Youth Ambassador for the American Lung Association and through the month of April appeared on television through public service announcements with Fox 10 news. Sydie came up with the idea of running a “penny war” at Westar ele-mentary to raise money for research and bring awareness to not only asthma, but lung cancer, COPD and various other lung diseases. When the Degraffs met with her school’s Principal, Mr. Bogart, he was receptive and proactive in making sure the Westar community jumped in to help. Syndie’s efforts to raise money for awareness produced an outstanding $2,813.65.
While Sydnie’s situation often seems consuming and overwhelming, the Degraffs are accustomed to knowing some of the issues that asthma can cause. At the age of 20, her mom Teresa was diagnosed with adult onset asthma. “I have managed to know my body and my triggers well enough to be able to keep it under control with minimal issues. I watch my daughter’s struggles sometimes in sadness and fear that she will miss out on the next activity,” she said. Yet, despite all of the daily stumbling blocks, the Degraffs continue to focus on positive ways to bring fresh air into the lives of all who struggle with lung disease.
Mrs. Matteson’s 4th grade class at Westar Elementary School was generously granted the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to “Uncle Alan”, the very generous uncle of Joe Gallagher, an amazing fourth-grade student in Mrs. Matteson’s class. After researching players and fol-lowing their game stats throughout the course of the season, these students were very eager to see their players in person! They prepared for their big day during “Stat Time Tuesday” where each student used XOOMS to research specific stats and applied various mathematical concepts including decimals, percentages, ratios, and probability to the information they were gathering. This unit of study provided a relevant learning experience, where the children realized that even sports fans need to know math! Game day arrived on March 12 at 7pm. Mrs. Matteson and her students sat together in a box suite at the U.S. Airways stadium to watch the Phoenix Suns come to life right before their eyes! “I know this is an experience that my students and I will never forget!” said Shawna Matteson, 4th grade teacher at Westar Elementary School.
graduation Set for Estrella Foothills high School class of 2012!
Notes from Estrella Foothills High School Principal, Leslie Standerfer
Estrella Foothills High School is proud to announce that our eighth class of graduates are preparing for the fast-approaching conclusion to their high school years.
The commencement ceremony for the Class of 2012 will take place on Thursday, May 17 at 8pm at the Goodyear Ballpark. This is the second year we will be at the ballpark; which provides more parking, more seating, and better views of the ceremony for those in attendance than the athletic stadium on campus. If you plan to celebrate with our graduates, we do ask that you not bring balloons, noise makers, and other things into the ballpark that can be distracting to those seated around you and take away from the dignity of the ceremony. We want to make sure that this is a memorable event for all our graduates and those in attendance to support them on this special occasion. On Wednesday, May 9 at 7pm, our Senior Awards Night will be held in the EFHS Performing Arts Center. This event is a wonderful opportunity to recognize scholarship offerings and individual accomplish-ments of our graduates.
As the Class of 2012 prepares for the approaching graduation, we invite everyone to join us in honoring them by saying congratulations when you see them in the community. And, I urge the graduates to take time to express appreciation to those who have helped them get to this point and to return the favor by mentoring others throughout their lives. Congratulations Class of 2012!

Estrella Soccer Players Selected for MlS tryouts
Worldnetsoccer President, Gustavo Martinez and his coaching staff, are pleased to announce that three Worldnetsoccer players were selected to try out for the Major League Soccer (MLS) Academy recently at Casa Grande Sports Center. Erick Armenta, age 16, from Desert Edge High School, along with Ricardo Sanchez, age 15 and Daniel Martinez, age 16, are both from Estrella Foothills High School. All three were selected by Worldnetsoccer coaching staff to represent Worldnetsoccer Club in the MLS Academy Try Outs, which is directed by Martin Vasquez - US National Team’s Assistant Coach. Players traveled to Casa Grande for the competition and received great reviews from Coach Vasquez and his staff. The three selected players will return to Casa Grande for the next leg of tryouts in May. If selected into the MLS Academy, each soccer player faces the decision to remain in his current high school and travel to Casa Grande for training three to four times weekly, or relocate to Casa Grande to attend the MLS Academy.
The MLS Academy is a funnel for US National Soccer Teams as well as the US National Soccer Team. Potentially, players can be awarded scholarships to colleges and universities, as well as spots on the MLS and US National Teams. In 2011, 90 percent of the senior class in the MLS Academy was awarded a full-ride scholarship to various colleges and uni-versities.
“We are pleased with the results and looking forward to offering this opportunity to other local kids in the valley,” said Martinez. “This is just the first steep to a great opportunity for the players with talent and the desire to work hard to earn their spot in the academy. Worldnetsoccer has always looked at the West Valley as the home of many talented players waiting to be discovered and offer them an opportunity to excel in school and on the soccer field,” he added.
Interested players ages 12-16 years of age, contact Gustavo Martinez at [email protected] for a chance to try out for soccer now!

Kids, got Your lids?Submitted by Jen Barber, Arizona In ACTION
Have your kids brought home any bicycle or walker charms from school? The charms are rewards for students wearing helmets while on bikes and scooters and for walking to school.
It’s all part of a program called Lids on Arizona Kids®. Estrella Mountain and Westar Elementary Schools are part of this pilot program run by the nonprofit Arizona in ACTION.
In the State of Arizona, helmets are not required by law for children on bikes and scooters.
Back in December 2011, just 3 of 50 students at Estrella Mountain Elementary School and 4 out of 64 students at Westar Elementary School were wearing helmets while riding to school on their bikes and scoot-ers. Today, that number is up to 20 kids wearing helmets at each school!
Along with the charms, Arizona in ACTION brings in local businesses and celebrities to hand out the charms. At the end of this school semester in May, Arizona in ACTION will be giving out awards and certificates to the children with the most charms.
Over the summer, you can keep your children safe by remembering to follow these simple suggestions from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
Protect your brain and save your life by wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet. Adjust your bicycle or scooter to fit. Check your equipment for properly inflated tires and working brakes. See. And BE SEEN! Wear bright colors when riding in the day and at night. Reflective tape on hel-mets and clothing helps, too. (If you can avoid riding at night, it’s safer. It’s much harder for others to see you in the dark.) Control your bicycle and scooter. Ride with one hand on the handlebars at all times. Watch for and avoid road hazards. http://www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/pedbimot/bike/kidsandbikesafetyweb/
Does your child need a helmet but you don’t want to spend more than $20 for one? You can purchase a brand new Bell Sports TrueFit helmet for kids or adults for just $11 from Arizona in ACTION. Please contact A.I.A.’s executive director, Jennifer Barber, at [email protected] for more information. The website is http://arizonainaction.org.

Starpointe café at Estrella, “Featuring, Fresh, Flavorful, Food” is becoming the meeting place for the community.

on your doorstep
Chef Michael’s lunches and dinners are the talk of the town. His home-cooked fresh approach toward food preparation has diners asking about his secret use of spices and herbs. When people ask for his secrets the Chef replies, “I am a culinary magic man, no magi-cian shares his secrets.” Chef Michael’s humor has been enjoyed by many visitors. His quick wit has customers laughing while enjoying the wonderful food. Mrs. Chef Norma, as she is now called, is working with her daugh-ter Dawn Spencer to handle the front of the house to create superb service as they deliver great food prepared in the kitchen, becoming a true “from-our-family-to-yours,” atmosphere. Chef Michael has attracted a fabu-lous collection of staff members that have become a working family. With the love and devotion of a family, the team is learning how to manage the stress of producing great food while being led by the creative forces of “Chef Michael Magician”.
Simon Reid, Chef Michael’s pick for Sous Chef, has worked in many kitchens in the past. He says, “Chef Michael has a vision for food that is con-tagious. His recipes are delicious! The Cunningham’s have started something special with the Café and I am excited to be part of its early success.”
The Café has also become a place for learning the inner workings of a food establishment. Two students from the culinary program at Estrella Community College have been interning with the Chef for the past several months and have been introduced to all aspects of starting a food service operation from the ground up. The challenges and successes of a startup operation are many and the experience will help them to succeed in their culinary future.
Melanie Miranda, a Culinary Student at Estrella Community College, coined the comment, “Chef Michael’s magical powers.” She says, “Magicians do not share their secrets about the performance of their magic tricks, there-for; a Chef also needs to keep his cuisine ingredients secret.”
Michael Robles, a senior at the college added, “When it comes to working with Chef Michael Cunningham it is a whole other experience. He is teaching me to cook simplistically yet create food with phenomenal flavor. I also find it impressive that the kitchen staff has been able to produce great food in such a small kitchen. I love the team I work with, the New York-accented Chef, the southern culinarian Simon, the sweet daughter of the kitchen Melanie, the vibrant big sister Dawn, and mighty Mother, Ms. Norma Cunningham. Everything we do is like we are all acting in a TV reality show, with fun, food and creativity flowing. Every day is a new episode.”
Students from the culinary program at Estrella Foothills High School are also part of the team learning how to provide real world food service! These students will be working to provide food service at the pool and to assist in the kitchen when needed. The plan: to create an envi-ronment that provides easy access to ordering food and drinks at the pool. The menus will continue to evolve with daily specials, special events, barbeques, and themed dinners.
The Symphony is coming to Estrella on Sunday, May 20, and Chef Michael is creating a special picnic dinner for your family to enjoy while listening to music by the lake. In addition to the regular menu items, two special picnic din-ners will be prepared especially for you. Half rack of ribs BBQ or honey glazed, with macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, and corn bread for $12.95.
Butter nut squash lasagna, green salad and garlic bread, for $12.95. Call, text or email your order, by Saturday May 19, by 3pm, for pick-up by Sunday, May 20, by 5pm.
Follow all Café events and weekly specials by joining the email list by emailing [email protected] or calling 623-986-8662.
Come to the Café for lunch or dinner. The seasonal hours of operation will be published on the email weekly blasts, so stay tuned. See you at the place!

hOA special report
In December of 2011, the Estrella Board of Directors, in collaboration with Capital Consultants Management Corporation, undertook develop-ment of 2012 Community-Wide Goals. Following several months of refine-ment, the initial list of 41 goals were rank ordered as High Priority, Lower Priority, or “Tasks” requiring ongoing attention by the Board of Directors and Management Company.
Objective: Continuously improve the Estrella community as a quality place to live and recreate by enhancing administrative processes; financial efficiencies; safety/security; community esthetics; resident communications; community services and by promoting community spirit.
Community Administration
1. Maintain equitable and timely enforcement of community covenants. Using annual community survey results, improve the percent of residents evaluating enforcement activities as “meeting” or “exceeding” resident expectations from 49.9% (2011) to 60% or greater (2012).
2. Create and implement a web-based Community Concern and Response tracking system for use by residents and staff. The assess-ment of system requirements shall be completed during 2Q2012, with full system implementation completed by the 4Q2012.
Starpointe Residents Club
1. Implement all Starpointe Residents Club related Operational Plan projects on time and on budget subsequent to approval by the Board of Directors.
2. Accomplish all Starpointe maintenance activities as stipulated in the Starpointe Maintenance, Use and Operating Agreement (Exhibit “B”) to include providing monthly feedback to the Community Manager and Board of Directors.
Financial Management
1. Apply best business practices for the use of owner and builder assessments. Continuously challenge and monitor operating budget expenditures. Complete all work included in 2012 Operating Budget, including $876K in reserve fund contributions, with yearend expenses between $4.4 and $4.6 M.
2. Complete by yearend 2012 a community 3-5 Year Operating Budget Plan.
3. Conduct an updated community-wide 2012 Reserve Study by 2Q2012.
Common Area Maintenance
1. Implement all Common Area related Operational Plan projects on time and on budget subsequent to approval by the Board of Directors.
2. Conduct monthly performance reviews of key contractors to include quarterly performance reviews presented to the Board of Directors.
Safety/Security
1. Revise the current Estrella Emergency Preparedness Manual. Draft revisions are to be completed by the end of the 2Q2012, and the final document revisions completed by end of year 2012.
Process and Procedures
1. Create and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan (contractor and in-house personnel) for all community assets. The evaluation of system requirements is to be completed by 3Q2012, and full program implementation completed by 4Q2012.
Communications
1. Improve communications regarding community governance struc-ture, committees, activities and goals using all available means (e-mail “blasts”, Voting Member Committee, Life-in-Estrella, My Hometown Estrella, Town Hall and Annual Meetings, New Resident Orientation). The Communications Committee is to submit a 2012 work plan by the 1Q2012.
2. Create and implement an action plan to increase number of registered users on the Life in Estrella web site by 25% year-over-year (2011 – 1,821 registered users) and improve the web site user interface as evaluated by residents. The Communications Committee is to submit 2012 work plan by the 1Q2012.
Summary:
Additional details of the total 41 2012 Community Goals can be obtained by contacting the community office. Quarterly progress reports on these goals will be provided at Board Meetings and posted on the Life in Estrella website.

hOA special report
Annually, the Management Company develops an “Annual Operational Plan” to replace or refurbish community assets that have reached their “use-ful life”. Projects considered for the plan include improvements funded in the 2012 Operating Budget, as approved in October 2011 and projects identified in the community’s Reserve Study as having met their projected “useful life”.
Using these two sources, the staff develops an “Annual Operational Plan” containing all proposed projects. After detailed evaluation by the staff, a final list of projects is prepared, implementation schedules are developed and the overall plan is reviewed with the Board of Directors.
Subsequent to Board review, and based upon schedules developed for each project, the staff proceeds to develop “requests for proposals” for spe-cific work to be undertaken. The community’s Procurement Policy requires that expenditures in excess of $2,500 require multiple bids. After bids have been received, the staff prepares bid evaluations and a recommendation for Board of Directors approval. After Board approval, the staff oversees con-tract negotiations and implementation of each project.
Projects in the 2012 Operational Plan requiring expenditures ($130,600) from the Operating Budget include:
Community Common Areas
• Spring and Fall Tree Replacements: $50,000
• Annual Granite Replenishment: $50,400
• Annual Shrub Replacement: $20,000
• Palm Tree Replacements: $10,200
In reviewing the community’s Reserve Study, the following projects have been proposed for implementation in 2012.
Starpointe Residents Club
• Televisions Replacement (7): $7,400
• Fitness Area Ceiling Fans Replacement (10): $6,650
• Youth Club TV Replacement (1 of 2): $750
• Pool Chlorine Dispenser Pump Replacement (1): $1,300
Community Office
• ID Printer Replacement (1): $3,100
• Guest Chairs Refurbish (9): $3,050
• Computers Replacement (4 of 17): $4,100
• Printer Replacement (1): $600
North and South Lake Pumps
• 150 HP Pump/Motor - Replacement: $27,000
• 100 HP Pump - Rebuild: $7,500
• 100 HP Motor - Rebuild: $4,100
North Lake and Yacht Club Area
• Park Furniture Replacement (28 pieces): $38,000
• Irrigation Controllers Replacement (14): $15,500
South Lake Park
• Ornamental Lights – Replacement: $180,350
Common Area Work (Star Tower)
• Circulation Pump Refurbish (3): $8,600
• Irrigation Controller Replacement (1): $1,500
• Maintenance Truck Replacement: $18,500
Common Area Walls and View Fences
• Repaint Stucco Walls in Lake Village: $56,500
• Repaint View Fences in Golf Village: $14,250
In addition to the above, the Reserve Study recommended an additional 11 projects for 2012. After review, the staff recommended these projects, in the amount of $138,000, be deferred as having one or more years of “useful life”, and therefore could be deferred until 2013 or beyond.
With the current plan for 2012, $398,750 in Reserve Funds, and $130,600 in Operating Budget, expenditures are being recommended. A total of $529,350 is projected to be expended in 2012 in the replacement or refurbishment of community assets.

ARMED FORCES DAYCelebrate Armed Forces Day on may 19. It is a day to honor Americans in uniform who serve their country in times of war and peace. Say thank you and recognize the outstanding contribution the Armed Forces community makes to this country.
MEMORIAL DAYmemorial Day, may 28, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Traditional observance of memorial Day has diminished over the years. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of memorial Day, the “national moment of remembrance” resolution was passed on December, 2000 which asks that at 3pm local time, for all Americans “To vol-untarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”
Pool Season is Right Around the corner! As the weather heats up, please keep in mind that cover-ups and shoes must be worn in the club at all times.
In anticipation of the Waterpark Grand opening, the Community Services office will be open on Cinco de mayo - Saturday, may 5 from 10am-3pm for all new residents to stop in and set up memberships. existing residents are asked to help us update our database on this day by providing your most current informa-tion, in order to avoid delays entering the Waterpark this season. The Community Services office will also remain open until 8pm on monday, may 14 for the same purpose.
Lap Pool ChangesThe community has spoken and we’re listening. now that the big pool is open all year round, the lap pool will go back to what it was originally designed for… lap swimming! effective imme-diately you must be 16 years of age or have completed the VIT program, which you are eligible for when you turn 13 years old. The lap pool was never intended for wading, lounging or as a splash pool. The only exception to this rule is swim lessons with Aqua Tots for any child under the age of 13. For any questions or concerns regarding the lap pool rule changes, please contact Dean Westover or Tammy Campbell at 623-386-1949.

Who Are The
people in your neighborhood
As a Commercial Pilot for Alaska Airlines, Mike Sullivan journeys the West Coast from a bird’s eye view often. He’s in the air approximately sev-enteen days a month, in-route to and from destinations lining the western coast from as far north as Canada and as far south as cities in Mexico. On occasion a flight requirement takes him to the extremity of the northwest continent, Alaska. “He’s a natural at flying,” says Gina, as she recalls how Mike has been around planes his entire life. His father, a retired Captain, worked for Northwest Airlines and owned his own private Cessna when Mike was growing up. Unlike most teens, Mike’s transportation consisted of a bike and a plane, rather than a car.
His wife Gina, a former flight attendant for Mesa Airlines for more than seven years, met her “favorite Captain” fourteen years ago and the two have been ‘flying high’ since. They’ve since married, began a family, and have landed in Estrella. They’ve been members of this community for seven years, with their most recent home situated in Ironwood Pointe.
Both Gina and Mike are originally from Oregon and Seattle, respec-tively, and found our beautiful Arizona community while visiting friends in Estrella, where Gina says they fell in love with the lifestyle.
Gina says that nothing makes the Sullivan family happier than being in this wonderful community, surrounded by friends and participating in the very ‘grounded’ sporting activities that each of them participate. Mike and
the Sullivans- mike, Gina, Dylan and Jagger
Gina are hooked on Estrella Adult Sports, currently engaged in sand volleyball. It’s actively participating in local sporting events and Sundays at the park barbecues where they gather with friends and watch the kids play.
Mike and Gina have two spirited boys, Dylan and Jagger. The two Westar elementary students may have met their energetic match with the new puppy in the house, Bennie, a Havanese, named after the pop-single, “Bennie and the Jets”, written by English rock-singer Elton John. So far Bennie’s been a great rough and tumble match for the boys when they’re not on a basketball or soccer field with an Estrella youth sporting event. Dylan and Jagger also enjoy escaping on occasional fishing trips with dad at local lakes and rivers.
The Sullivans also attend Estrella Mountain Church on Wednesday evenings where they share food and worship with a great group of friends. It seems they have made important connections in a variety of settings within the community. With all of the activities stirring in the household, it’s rare to experience ‘relax’ time, but it is something they occasionally submit to with a great movie and pizza delivery.
Melanie Chittester, Yoga Enthusiast and Mom, shared her thoughts - “Mother’s Day will always be more about my Mother than about being
a mother myself. I had a very happy childhood – my Mother was a Super Mom. She was loving, caring, generous, giving, hardworking and somehow managed to “do it all”. I was always close to my Mom, I never questioned her love and faith in me…there was never a doubt that she wanted the best for me and believed in me. I was always aware of what a good person she was and what a wonderful mother she was, and for that I am truly grateful. I lost my Mom nearly five years ago; she died of a sudden heart attack. There was no warning, no chance to say good-bye. I had her for 38 years, I wanted more. It wasn’t until I became a mother myself that I truly realized just what being a mother meant: the magnitude of that relationship, the bond, the love, the responsibility cannot be fully realized until you experience it firsthand. It was at that moment that I began to realize, to grasp the true meaning of motherhood…..and then I loved my Mother more.”
Shi Feliciano, Stay-at-home Mother of two, enjoys the special treatment she receives from her family -
“When you have little kids, the thought of sleeping in might sound heavenly. As an early riser, “sleeping in” for me is a tad different. I will inevi-tably wake at 5:30am, a good hour before my husband and kids rise. So my Mother’s Day begins with me, waking to a silent house, attempting to fall back to sleep, failing and then ultimately pretending to sleep in.
Eventually, I hear my 7-year-old son start to stir. He tries to play quietly until my 9-year-old daughter joins him. I lay there listening to their “whis-pers” as I hear breakfast-in-bed plans unfold as they head to the kitchen. I nudge my husband awake so he can control the kitchen chaos. For the next 30 minutes I enjoy the serenade of the pots and pans, the sizzle of the bacon, and the testing of my family’s teamwork. When the three of them appear in our room with my breakfast plate, the joy in their faces looks remarkably similar to their faces on Christmas morning and I don’t know which of us is happier!”
Just for fun, a handful of mothers shared the following wishes, saying that they would like to be ‘spoiled on Mother’s Day with the following:
Lisa T. hopes for a homemade breakfast or dinner made by my boys…(and for my husband to do the dishes afterwards!)Jennifer wants her husband to clean the house!Tane would like to be able to sleep in past 7am!Jennifer M. wants her children to sleep L-A-T-E! Mary D. and Andrea are both hoping for a clean house on Sunday, May 13.And yet another Jennifer, would love a full week’s vacation!
Thanks for sharing your wishes and Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms out there!

Surprise Mom With A Patio TransformationSubmitted by estrella resident, betty Guenther
need a fresh, easy gift idea for mom to make her special day extra special without breaking the bank? It’s all about getting outdoors this month and surprising mom with a little patio update to get everyone in the house away from the TV and out-side enjoying the great outdoors. may is a great time to make the patio the most popular space in the house for gathering friends, dining, relaxing with a good book or just hanging out.
outdoor transformations don’t call for replacing patio furniture completely. how about updating old sunbaked cushions with pretty new fabric, throwing in a splash of mom’s favorite color with pillows or adding a custom tablecloth to the outdoor dining space utilizing a giant floral pattern that shouts summer? mom’s special day could be topped off with lunch or dinner served outdoors for a real treat. now that’s a surprise she’s sure to love! Your transformation will be complete with flexible arrangements of outdoor furniture, accented with colorful pillows, lamps, rugs and plants helps create an interior feel to outdoor space.

business spotlight
There’s a place, not too far down the road from the winding hills of Estrella, where the city skyline and buzz-ing traffic are erased by the serenity of a comforting des-tination with a western-themed atmosphere and plenty of room on the dance floor. It’s a place where you can enjoy a variety of live country music performers, learn to two-step for free, order up a late night happy hour, dine on some delectable prime rib on Friday and Saturday nights, have a family reunion or backyard barbeque birthday party catered and test your vocals with some karaoke. It’s a place that’s now open locally where you can relax and know that you’re among friends. That place, Cowgirls Bar & Grill, is located just east of Dysart Rd. and just north of McDowell Rd., at 1733 N. Dysart Rd. in Avondale. The new family-owned eatery is just what the west valley ordered – a variety from chain-style bars and grills with a great mix of grub and entertainment.
Cowgirls Bar & Grill first opened their Dysart location doors in late September 2011, as two local west-valley owners, Al and Cathy, finally allowed their visions of a dream restaurant to come true. The two have been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years in various management positions, anticipating that one day there would be a locally-owned cool place, named the “hottest bar and grill” in the west valley, where people could come together for food, drinks and fun.
And hot it is! Just try the ‘sting’ they’re serving up with ‘scorpion bites’ on their Saloon Starters menu. It’s a fiery way to begin an evening, while experiencing some weekly entertain-ment and features the spicy fresco chili peppers, stuffed with crab style cream cheese, accompanied by a chipotle-ranch dippin’ sauce. Maybe you’re interested in Thursday’s trivia competition or karaoke? On Friday, you’ll find live music during the dinner hour, and a D.J. playing a variety of music hits, accepting your
requests. There isn’t a night of the week that doesn’t feature some sort of entertainment, happy hour or drink special. You’ll want to plan ahead for your gathering by checking out the Cowgirls cal-endar for a complete list of specials and events. They’re updating events and entertainment regularly. For a complete list of what’s going on at Cowgirls Bar & Grill, visit their website at www.cowgirlsgrill.com or contact them by phone at 623-385-8888.
Menu items range from unique starters, like the fried pickle spears to brick oven flatbread pizzas, specialty sandwiches and salads, barbeque baskets, and burgers, steaks and prime rib. And once you’ve entered the front doors, the ambiance situates you in the unique atmosphere of a comfortable lodge located in Montana or somewhere deep within the Wild West.
Cowgirls Bar & Grill is also open for lunch. They’ve got a $5.99 lunch-special menu that will help you escape the mid-day drive thru lines at fast food establishments. The friendly staff at Cowgirls helps you feel right at home. Whether you’re grabbing a quick barbeque brisket lunch or anticipating an eve-ning birthday gathering, you’ll appreciate this newest local valley ‘hot spot.’

Avatar has seen robust growth in the two years since its active adult community, CantaMia, became a part of Estrella. CantaMia recently earned two prestigious awards from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The community was presented with the Top Award for “Best ‘For Sale’ Community Over 200 Homes” and the Silver Award for “Best Green Community.” Quite an honor for such a young community!
The gated, green neighborhood, which includes solar on all rooftops, welcomed many new residents and provided a major lifestyle amenity with the opening of the resort-inspired CantaMia Village Center. Addressing the needs of their buyers, two new home plans were recently added to complement the original 14 models. All of this activity is happening just as the housing market appears to be rebounding.
“There is no question in our minds that the bottom of the housing market is in the rearview mirror,” said Carl Mulac, founder of CantaMia and Executive Vice President of Avatar. “We have created a community we know is attracting some of the 76-million Baby Boomers in the market looking to find something special, and we are designing a place they can truly enjoy living in.”
CantaMia’s new floor plans are single family homes designed with the empty nester in mind. The 1,419 square foot Aria is perfect for the
seasonal homebuyer looking for a home that is easily maintained. The 2,600 square foot Concerto is an entertainment home with a rear wall of retractable glass and a spacious front courtyard. To learn more about Avatar Homes in Estrella, please visit our website at www.estrella.com or call (623) 474-6960 today.
With the last day of school right around the corner, now is the time for parents to start thinking about how to motivate children to stay engaged and learning throughout the summer break. Estrella residents can take advantage of many opportunities within the community, including some helpful tips from local educators.
“My biggest suggestion for parents is to keep their kids reading throughout the summer,” says Michele Bove, Estrella Mountain Elementary School Reading Specialist. “Many of the local libraries have summer reading programs that offer students incentives for completing a certain number of books during the summer months. Going to the library is also a great way to allow children the freedom to choose their own reading material.”
In addition to public libraries, the Weststar Elementary School Library will be open two mornings a week for students to check out books and play games.
“Summer is a welcome relief for many children as they are able to relax and recharge their brain batteries,” said Westar Elementary School Principal, Dave Bogart. “Tying lessons into summer activities makes learning fun so that it doesn’t seem like a chore for your child. This summer, learn while playing!”

Summer day camps are great for social interaction and can be fun and instructive too. Estrella Mountain Preschool will be offering educational themed day camps every week beginning June 1 through August 30. Children preschool age through fifth grade are welcome. For more information visit: www.empreschool.com or call (623) 476-5578.
The National Center for Safe Routes to School has deemed May 9, 2012 the first ever National Bike to School Day. Estrella has two elementary schools and one high school conveniently located inside the community, making it easy to walk or bike to class. Students and parents are encouraged to don their helmets and pedal to school in an effort to create awareness for healthy lifestyles and physical fitness.
National Bike to School Day is a part of National Bike Month, and is being held just prior to Bike to Work Week – May 14 through 18.
Established in May 2006, the National Center for Safe Routes to School assists states and communities in enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bicycle to school. Contact your child’s school for specific activities. To learn more about National Bike to School Day, visit: www.saferoutesinfo.org.
