What are the consequences of alcohol misuse?

Drinking too much alcohol can lead to a range of problems, including:

Social problems:

Alcohol misuse is a pattern of drinking alcohol that is causing damage to health and wellbeing. The damage may be physical (e.g. liver disease), mental (e.g. unhappiness), or social (e.g. damaging relationships with family or friends).

What can I do to help myself?

• Avoid keeping alcohol at home

• Avoid social events where people will be drinking alcohol

• Drink a lot of water and eat full meals before drinking alcohol

• Talk to someone you trust about your concerns

When should I contact a mental health professional?

• If you are unable to control your desire for alcohol

• If you are unable to carry out your daily activities without having an alcoholic drink first

• If you are unable to stop drinking, even after someone has advised you to drink less

• Drinking alcohol every day

• Being unable to resist drinking alcohol, even if it is having negative effects on health, mood and relationships

• Neglecting activities that you used to enjoy because of your alcohol use

What are the symptoms of alcohol misuse?

People with depression may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

What is alcohol misuse?

• Cancer

• Brain, liver and stomach damage

• Injuries

• Increased risk of violence

• Weight gain

• Problems having children

• Financial difficulties

• Relationship problems

• Risky sexual behavior

• Unhappiness/feeling bad

• Loss of control

• Making bad decisions

• Forgetfulness
