Mission

• The Multi-State Collaborative on Military Credit (MCMC) mission can be summarized as:

– facilitate an interstate partnership of 13 states and

– translate competencies acquired by veterans through military training and occupational experience toward college credentials.

Vision

• Maximizing ways for military connected students to transition to college and onward to the civilian workforce

• Creating models for consistent, transparent, and the effective awarding credit for military training and experience

• Establishing strong partnerships with peer institutions and organizations

History

• 2012 – Indiana and Ohio had been communicating quite a bit

• 2013 – Held the first in-person meeting– Added Illinois and Minnesota to the Executive Committee

• 2014 – Began regular conference calls of Executive Committee; approached MHEC to partner and be the fiscal agent

• 2014 – Received grant funding from Lumina Foundation ($900,000 over 3 years)

• 2015 – Received grant funding from USA Funds ($200,000 over one year)

Successes to Date

• Met with representatives at the Pentagon for access to data

• Presented at major national conferences, as well as other meetings, and appeared in numerous publications across the United States.

Successes to Date

• Eleven states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin have developed a mechanism by which the persistence and graduation rate of servicemembers can be tracked over time.

Successes to Date

• Five states: Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin have three or more state licensing boards that are willing to accept military training and experience as a way to accelerate progress toward earning a license or certificate.

Successes to Date

• Sent 15 healthcare faculty to the Medical Education and Training Campus at Ft. Sam Houston

• Invited to roundtable discussions held by the American Legion on credentialing and by Student Veterans of America on the Forever GI Bill

Challenges

• Access to data and additional information to help articulate courses

• One definition for the term “veteran”

• Limited resources to make a greater impact

• Increase faculty awareness of how military experiences, courses, and instruction are evaluated

• Training for faculty and staff
