Very glad the cold is over! With tempera-tures hitting record lows as well as record highs within a matter of weeks the saying holds true for the panhandle, if you dont like the weather, stay a while, it will change! Change is what is on everyones mind these days. With the US Census numbers out we see a huge change in how our demographic is rapidly making strides at becoming more influential as our population numbers in-crease. With that growth comes responsibil-ity. We spent some time with people in our community who have taken that responsibil-ity upon themselves. Lilia Escajeda seems ready to become the first Hispanic female to hold a city commissioners seat and Dora Echevarria takes hold of the reins as the new Executive Director for the Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Both individuals shared the sentiment that the
time is upon us to begin to take our proper place as a community that can lead, inspire and give back to all Hispanics within Amarillo. We are only as strong as our weakest link, is a saying that comes to mind as I begin to think about our future and the importance of making a positive impact on it. We all need to take responsibility for what lies ahead. We all have our part to do. Heres to hoping that we all find the motivation to do so!

Con temperaturas alcanzando niveles rcord, tanto bajas y altas, en cuestin de semanas, el dicho es vlido, si no te gusta el clima, qudate un rato ms, y este cambiar! Y el cambio es lo que est en la mente de todos estos das. Con los nmeros del Censo de EE.UU. donde vemos un gran cambio en la forma de nuestra audiencia que rpidamente est dando grandes pasos a ser ms influyente en nuestra poblacin con su aumento en nmero de Hispanos. Con ese crecimiento, viene la responsabilidad. Pasamos algn tiempo con gente en nuestra comunidad que han tomado esa responsabilidad sobre s mismos. Lilia Escajeda parece dispuesta a convertirse en la primera mujer hispana en ocupar un puesto de comisionado de la ciudad y Dora Chavarra se apodera de las riendas como nueva Directora de la Cmara de Comercio Hispana de Amarillo. Las dos compartieron el mismo sentimiento, que el tiempo est sobre nosotros para empezar a tomar el lugar que nos corresponde como comunidad que puede conducir, inspirar y brindar cosas nuevos a todos los hispanos en Amarillo. Somos tan fuerte como nuestro vnculo ms dbil, es un dicho que viene a la mente cuando me pongo a pensar sobre nuestro futuro y la importan-cia de hacer un impacto positivo en l. Todos tenemos que asumir la responsabilidad de lo que se avecina. Todos podemos colaborar. Espero que est sea la esperanza en que todos encontremos la motivacin para hacerlo!

Enfocndose en los detalles se puede resaltar la belleza de una imagen. Los paisajes y retratos son especialidad, pero le gusta tambin probar diferentes opciones.
Freestyler! I guess you can say Im a photographer. I like to think of myself as a man with a camera! Jared brings his self-taught approach to photog-raphy to the pages of Mi Revizta. Focusing on the little things to highlight the beauty within an image you can see his attention to detail. Landscape and portraits are his mainstay, but we somehow figured out a way to get him to shoot a variety of things.
Mi nombre es Diego Gavilanes, soy de Quito, capital del Ecuador. Vine hace 4 aos a realizar mis estudios de posgrado en WTAMU en el rea de Diseo y Comunicacin. Actualmente estoy a cargo de las relaciones pblicas y mar-keting de V-me TV, un servicio en espaol de la cadena de televisin publica KACV. Apoyo y me gusta el trabajo de Mi Revizta ya que creo es oportuno contar un medio de informacin impreso que llegue al pblico hispano.
My name is Diego Gavilanes, born in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. I came to WTAMU four years ago to obtain Graduate Degree in Design and Communication. Today I am in charge of the public relations and marketing of V-me TV, a Spanish language service of KACV-TV. I support Mi Revizta because I think it is a good way to interact with the hispanic community.
Nativo de Amarillo y graduado de Caprock High School, Henry lleva ms de 37 aos de experiencia de en la fotografa. Ha trabajado para el Amarillo Globe News, American Odessa y la Prensa Asociada. Sus fotos han aparecido en la revista Time, Texas Monthly, Dallas Morning News, entre otras. Siempre me ha gustado la gente y fotografiar todo lo que veo. Amarillos Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrated their 25th year anniversary in style at the Civic Centers Heritage Ballroom. With food, music and fun for all, a historic stroll down memory lane was in order as founding members were honored and several keynote speakers gave their outlook for Amarillos growth in the Hispanic community.

Ganador del premio Grammy y leyenda de la msica tejana Emilio Navaira hizo su primera aparicin en Amarillo desde su accidente casi fatal del 24 de marzo del 2008. Junto con sus dos hijos tan ampliamente reconocidos, nos cuenta Ral, Emilio mostr su gratitud hacia los aficionados mediante la realizacin de todos sus xitos. Aunque todava se est recuperando, Emilio declar que es muy humilde y agradecido de estar vivo y cantar todava.
Grammy award winning and Tejano music legend Emilio Navaira made his first appearance in Amarillo since his almost fatal accident back on March 24, 2008. Along with his two sons and just as widely recognized bother Raul; Emilio showed his gratitude towards fans by performing all his hits. Though still recovering, Emilio stated that he is humbled and extremely thankful to be alive and still sing.

V-me (pronounced veh-meh, Spanish for see me) is one of the largest Spanish language television networks in the United States. V-me is available for free over the air, and on basic cable, through its association with PBS member stations. More than 2 years ago,
KACV TV, the public station of the Texas Panhandle decided to bring qual-ity programming for the Hispanic families of this area. The 24-hour digital broadcast service was launched in this area in March 2009, becoming the first station to offer digital television in Amarillo. Many times, Spanish becomes a secondary language among Hispanic families, and is often practiced only by the older members of the family thus robbing it of the importance it truly deserves. Younger generations, in many cases speak Spanish incorrectly or simply ignore it completely. Being bilingual in this country is an advantage that opens many doors, and what could be better to speak both English and Spanish in an appropriate and correct way? The best legacy that parents can leave to their children is a language. Although it is never too late to start, the best age to learn a language is in childhood. It is essential that the Latino
family becomes aware of this, and starts to recognize the importance that the Spanish language has in their lives. KACV, through V-me wants Hispanic families to be proud not only of their language, but of their roots and culture. For this reason, V-me offers cultural programming entirely in Spanish, as well as music, sports, Latin American films, cooking shows, and a variety of entertaining programming dedicated to children. Families can learn while having fun when watching V-me. The programming of this channel is very wide and covers all tastes. V-me also offers science and nature programs, mini series and dramatic series for the whole family. V-me TV is the best opportunity for Latino families in the Texas Panhandle to learn more about who they are, the importance of their community in this country and how lucky they are to be able to speak two different languages. Muchas veces el espaol se convierte en una lengua secundaria en los hogares hispanos, hablada tan solo por las generaciones antiguas, sin darle la importancia que realmente merece. Las nuevas generaciones en muchos casos la hablan con muchos errores o simplemente la ignoran por completo. El ser bilinge en este pas es una ventaja que abre muchas puertas. Y que mejor si se habla tanto el ingls como el espaol de una manera apropiada y correcta. El mejor legado que los padres pueden dejar a sus hijos es un segundo idioma. receive timely, high-quality treatment. The American Cancer Societys most recent estimates for prostate can-cer in the United States are for 2010:About 217,730 new cases of prostate cancerAbout 32,050 deaths from prostate cancer
DescriptionMost early cases of prostate cancer cause no symptoms, but some early signs may be frequent urination, especially at night; blood in urine, difficulty starting urination or inability to urinate; and weak or painful urination. DetectionAt this time, there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routine screen-ing for average-risk men. Rather the American Cancer Society recommends average risk men make an informed decision about screening. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a simple blood test given in order to provide feedback.AgeAge is the strongest risk factor for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is very rare before the age of 40, but the chance of having prostate cancer rises rapidly after age 50. Almost 2 out of 3 prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65.Family historyProstate cancer seems to run in some families, which suggests that in some cases there may be an inherited or genetic factor. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a mans risk of developing this disease. DietMen who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer. These men also tend to eat fewer fruits and vegetables. Doctors are not sure which of these factors is responsible for raising the risk.RecommendationIf symptoms are present of if you fit the criteria for at risk factors, Mi Revizta suggests a visit to Texas Panhandle Family Planning Centers Mens Health Clinic.

Lejos de que exista un movimiento exclusivo de la talla de Egipto, nuestro gobierno local po-dra tener un cambio de escenario, que podra ser apropiado para el nuevo milenio. Mi Revizta se acerc a conversar con Lilia Escajeda, candidata para ser comisionada de la ciudad, e intent envisionar como sera si es que ella fuera electa. primera comisionada hispana femenina de Amarillo, as como las causas de la mayora de los latinos en Amarillo para no involucrarse en nuestros asuntos del gobierno local. Tienes que saber a quin preguntar con el fin de aprovechar las cosas disponibles para llevar a cabo cualquier tarea, mencion Liliana. Nuestra comunidad, los latinos en Amarillo, no han llevado a cabo esta tarea por as decirlo. No hemos tomado nuestro propio lugar en la estructura de poder de nuestra ciudad. El pensamiento lgico en este caso sera preguntar si Lilia es esa persona. Nadie podra dudar de su espln-dido rcord. Habiendo estado presente en ms juntas locales que el espacio en este artculo nos permitir enlistar, la experiencia no es una cosa que falta en su curriculum vitae. Cmo podemos tener un sentido de seguridad de que las necesidades, especficamente las necesidades de la comunidad hispana llaman la atencin de la alcalda? No voy a ser la primera en decir que hemos sido pasados por alto. Creera que las prue-bas se presentan por s mismas. Con casi un tercio de nuestra poblacin de la ciudad de origen hispano creo que la mayora estaramos de acuerdo en que no hemos hecho grandes avances, por lo menos no suficientes en nuestras comunidad hispana, los barrios y los sectores empresariales. Los cambios toman tiempo. Todos esta-
mos luchando para darle sentido a nuestra pelea reciente con la crisis financiera del pas. Nuestra ciudad no qued indemne. Con los presupuestos que quedaron cortos en una variedad de sectores, el estancamiento del crecimiento y la revitalizacin de factores impor-tantes, los retos que tenemos por delante pueden definirse cmo la comunidad hispana crece a medida que crecemos en la mayora en un
futuro no muy lejano. Queremos ser una ciudad que otros envidien. Una ciudad que sea considerada vanguardista en la innovacin y el crecimiento. Mencion Liliana. La posicin del comisionado de la ciu-dad conlleva una amplia variedad de responsabilidades. No ser la curva de aprendizaje asociada a ella, si soy elegida, pero si usted sabe algo sobre m es que conozco a mucha gente de todos los mbitos de la vida, Afirma Lilia. Con 30 aos de servicio a travs de una variedad de posiciones, la mayora como oficial del Amarillo National Bank, he llegado a conocer bastante gente. Weve said for years that we are under represent-ed. Weve challenged the powers that be into
changing protocol to get one of our own into a position of authority and decision making possibilities. Has that time now come? Short of the causing an upscale movement the likes of Egypt, our local government landscape could possibly have a change of scenario, one that could be fitting for the new millennium. Sitting down with city commissioner hopeful, Lilia Escajeda, Mi Revizta tried to get a scope of what that landscape might look like if she were to get elected. Ill be the first to tell you, I talk more than I listen, shares Lilia. It was evident as we sat down to discuss her thoughts about pos-sibly being elected as Amarillos first Hispanic female commissioner as well as what causes most Latinos in Amarillo to not get involved in our local government affairs? You have to know who to ask in order to take advantage of things available to ac-complish any given task, mentioned Lilia. Our community, Latinos in Amarillo, have not stepped up to the plate so to speak. We have not taken our proper place in the power structure of our city. The logical thinking here would be to ask if Lilia is that person. No one would argue her tack record. Sitting
on more local boards than space would allow us to list, experience is not a thing lacking from her resume. How is that we get a sense of assurance that the needs, specifically the needs within the Hispanic community get attention from city hall. I wont be the one to say that we have been overlooked in particular. I would hope the evidence would stand for itself. With nearly a third of our city population being Hispanic I think most would agree that we have not made big enough strides in our Hispanic communities, neighborhoods, and business sectors. Change takes time. We are all struggling to make sense of our recent bout with the nations financial crisis. Our city wasnt left unscathed. With budgets falling short in a variety of sectors, growth stagnant at times, and revitalization an important factor; the chal-lenges that lay ahead may well define how the Hispanic community thrives as we grow into the majority in the not so distant future. We want to be a city of envy. One that is looked upon as leading the way in innovation and growth. mentioned Lilia. The position of city commis-sioner brings a variety of responsibilities with it. There will be learning curve associated with it if I am elected, but if you know anything at all about me its that I know a lot of people from all walks of life. states Lilia. In my 30 plus years of service through a variety of positions, the majority as an officer for Amarillo National Bank, I have come to know quite a few people. Thats what I consider my greatest assets as I enter the local political arena.
A political arena that has very few Hispanic faces. Which leaves us both questioning why the disparity in representation as a demographic. . We need to have open discussion without getting angry or calling each other names, shared Lilia. We need to bring an end to looking at our differences rather than our common ground. Our city is growing and keeping up with those changes is something local elected officials need to keep pace with. The fact that there are so many young Hispanics in our community and we dont really know who they are or where to find them is not something to overlook. We have to find a place were we could identify those up and coming leaders in our community. I feel like there just isnt much interaction with the general community for them. That is hopefully something I can institute, an opportunity to bring more people to the forefront of what is going on in our city. We need to start talking about our community and not so much about them over their or those people; a dialogue that actually starts talking about the common things that bind us all together. Its important that we listen to anyone who has a concern or an idea or wants to participate. If you start seg-regating people, then those people

loose faith in the system. One wouldnt argue that faith is not something the His-panic community has had in our local political systems. Seems getting elected in Amarillo has more to do with whom you know rather than what you know. Asked how she felt about those types of statements, Lilia replied, Its time to begin thinking outside the box. I dont care who you are, people tend to think and operate within their sphere of influ-ence, people you grew up with, or work with. We dont stretch our minds to include and think about things we are not familiar with. This plays heavily into those types of perceptions. There are people and lifestyles that many arent familiar with and this causes a natural exclusion. Everyone needs to be more open minded and
receptive to the needs of the whole community and not just certain segments or groups. No one can tell what impact Lilia will have if elected. Granted, having a relatable face could be a good thing; a very good thing. The landscape is changing. We have yet to see if the direction of change is one we all can be a part of. Lilia hopes get-ting elected would be a positive step in that direction. Ive been debating doing this, running for office, for some time. I feel now is the time. Lets hope so!

Siento que simplemente no hay mucha interaccin con la comunidad en general para ellos. Es importante que escuchemos a alguien que tiene una preocupacin o una idea o quiere participar. Si usted comienza a segregar a las personas, entonces esa gente pierde la fe en el sistema. Yo dira que la fe no es algo que la comunidad hispana ha tenido en nuestros sistemas polticos locales. Parece ser que el ser elegido en Amarillo tiene ms que ver con sus contactos ms que su conocimiento. Al preguntarle cmo se senta acerca de estos tipos de declaraciones, Lilia respondi: Es hora de empe-zar a pensar fuera del crculo. No me importa quin seas, la gente tiende a pensar y operar dentro de su esfera de influencia, con la gente con quien creci o ha trabajado. No estirar nuestras mentes
a incluir y pensar en cosas con las que no estamos familiarizados. Esto juega mucho en este tipo de percepciones. Hay personas y estilos de vida que muchos no estn familiarizados y esto crea ex-clusin natural. Todo el mundo debe ser ms abierto y receptivo a las necesidades de toda la comunidad y no slo a determinados segmentos o grupos . Nadie puede decir qu tan grander pueda ser el impacto que Lilia tendr en caso de ser elegida. Por supuesto, que tiene una cara amigable y podra ser buenas obras, una cosa muy bue-na. El paisaje est cambiando. An tenemos que ver si la direc-cin del cambio es uno del que todos podamos ser parte. Si Lilia es elegida, sera un paso positivo en esa direccin. He estado debatiendo de esta manera, corriendo para la oficina, desde hace algn tiempo. Siento que ahora es el momento. Esperemos que as sea!

Mi Revizta (MR)Cmo te sientes al haber sido seleccionada para representar a nuestra comunidad en tu nueva posicin como Directora Ejecutiva de la Cmara Hispana de Comercio?
Dora Chavarra Este es mi trabajo ideal. No me malinterpreten, me ha gus-tado todo lo que he hecho en el pasado, desde mi primera posicin en 1990 en Amarillo como asistente en un lavado de autos locales hasta mi ltima posicin con Telemundo Amarillo. Siento que todo lo que he aprendido con los aos me hace capaz de el mejoramiento de la comunidad latina.
MR Cul es tu inspiracin para hacer tu trabajo como nueva Directora Ejecutiva?
Dora Pienso en cuando era traductora de mi madre. El no saber Ingls fue una barrera importante. Sigo teniendo el mismo sentimiento de utilidad, saber que yo soy capaz de conectar dos lados de una manera positiva. Nada debe ser un obstculo cuando las personas o las empresas estn tratando de triunfar en la vida. Esa es mi motivacin principal. Amarillo tiene un mucha proyeccin para el futuro. Los latinos sern una gran parte de esto.
MR Danos tu opinin en los retos que se avecinan a medida que crece la conciencia de la Cmara de Comercio.
Dora Definitivamente las relaciones comunitarias. Hay tanta tensin a veces que la falta de conexin trae tiempos diferentes. Hay que mostrar todos los ngulos posibles para beneficio de la cooperacin no slo en los negocios sino tambin en la vida mediante la educacin, la sensibilizacin y el apoyo para el xito mutuo.
MR Cmo describiras las empresas latinas y su impor-tancia para el rea de Amarillo?
Dora Muy unida. Casi fuertes bases. Que todos ayu-dan en las familias hispanas. Es una cualidad que definitivamente no deben pasar por alto. Sin embargo, como ya he dicho que estas mismas empresas rara vez saben que estos recursos estn disponibles. La cmara definitivamente tiene que hacer un mejor trabajo de volver a conec-tarse con los dueos de negocios. Entonces podemos empezar a ver los beneficios de lo que nuestras comuni-dades tienen para ofrecer unos a otros.
MR Cuando todo est dicho y hecho, cul quisiera que fuera su legado?
Dora WOW. Es importante ver donde queremos estar en el futuro y si yo tuviera que hacer hincapi en una cosa, sera en mantener un sentimiento de ayuda al prjimo. Quisiera que el equipo de la Cmara y yo, hagamos todo lo que este en nuestras manos para servir no slo a nuestra comunidad latina, sino a Amarillo en su conjunto e impulsar el xito de nuestros negocios, nuestros hijos y nuestras comunidades.
An Amarillo resident since 1990, Dora Chavarria has seen and experienced quite a bit. She counts being an immigrant herself as one of the key points of
reference as she takes the lead as the newly hired Executive Director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Mi Revizta (MR) How are you feeling being selected to represent our de-
mographic in your new position as Executive Director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce?
Dora Chavarria This is my dream job. Dont get me wrong, Ive loved ev-erything Ive done in the past, from my first position in 1990 in Amarillo
as an attendant at a local car wash to my last position with Telemundo Ama-rillo. I just feel that all that Ive learned
over the years is now able to be utilized to the betterment of the Latino community.
MR Whats your inspiration to do your job as the
new ED?Dora
I think back to when I was my mothers translator. Not knowing English was a major barrier. I still get the same feeling of usefulness knowing that I
am able to connect two sides in a positive way. Nothing should be a barrier when people or businesses are trying
to succeed in life. That is my main motivator as I look forward. Amarillo has a lot of upside to its future. Latinos will
be a big part of that.
MR Give us in your opinion the challenges that lay ahead as
you grow the Chambers awareness.
Dora Definitely community relations.
There is so much tension at times with the disconnect that comes
with being at times differ-ent. Bring all sides back to
the table and show them the benefits of cooperation not just
in business but also in life through education, awareness and support
for mutual success.
MR How would you describe Latino
businesses and their importance to the Amarillo area?
Dora Very tight knit. Almost grassroots in origin.
Hispanic families get everyone involved. Its a quality that we definitely dont want to overlook.
Yet as I say that these same businesses rarely know were available as a resource. The chamber definitely
needs to do a better job of reconnecting with those business owners. Then we can begin to see the benefit
of what our communities have to offer each other.
MR When its all said and done, what do you want your
legacy to when remembering your time is over?
Dora WOW. Its important to look forward to where we want to be in the
future and if I were to place emphasis on one thing to be remembered for I would like for it to be a sense of servanthood. That I and the team
we have did all we could do to serve not just our Latino community but Amarillo as a whole in gaining momentum for success for our businesses, our
children and our communities.
