Carta del EditorA note from the publisher

Like the seasons, we here at Mi Revizta undergo change as well. This issue marks the first for newly inked Art Director, Andres Echeverria to fully paste everything together, as well as the introduction to new staff journalists, Morayma Munoz and Jazmin Saavedra.

As good as the change of climate is, seeing transformation and growth in indi-viduals is wonderful to experience. This month we introduce you to Ricardo Baca, a young gentleman with an exciting future ahead as he follows his dream of becoming a fashion designer. As we see the end of National Hispanic Heritage Month, new beginnings could be in store for new members of our local and state politics. We ask questions of the two front-runners for November’s election. Abel Bosquez and Four Price are both running for the Texas 87th District State Representative seat. And we couldn’t end October without a little “fear factor”. Local haunted houses opened their doors as we give our reviews. They all were a great experience.

As always, please enjoy. Let us know what you think ([email protected]) as well as items you would like to see in future issues.

Me vi obligado a buscar ayuda.

You know how certain people just stand out at first glance? That was the case with my brief encoun-ter with Ricardo Baca. I met Ricardo, a 19-year-old Mexican boy, in a café where my friend and I

frequently go to converse. His curiosity as well as ours soon seemed inevitable. “I moved to Amarillo at age nine with my mother who was fleeing from violence in Chihuahua, Mexico. Part of that violence included my father who was sentenced to several years in prison for drug trafficking. While in high school I became the victim of my own mistakes and developed a drug addiction.” As he continued to tell me his story he admit-ted, “I felt worthless and in deep darkness. I was forced to seek help. A teacher by the name of Efrain Guillen offered to introduce and take me to the Reed Adolescent Center in Plainview, Texas better known as the RAC.” It was there where a new opportunity and an aspiring love of fashion design were revived within Ricardo and his

dream of something he called, “My Future Project.” A smile returned to his face as we continued to speak, “All that darkness doesn’t matter now.” For the recently graduated Caprock student remembering the past year that he used to rehabilitate and take full responsibil-ity for his past mistakes seems like an eternity. He currently lives with his mother and stepfather whom he describes as, great people. “My experiences have enriched the way I feel and how I imagine the world around me. ’My future project,” which consists of many sketches of clothing that I design in a very simple form, are a goal and challenge that someday I want to bring to life.” Ricardo has shown his discipline. Already he has made plans and has made the necessary arrangements to attend the Art Institute of Dallas in the Spring of 2011 where he will study for two years then proceed to finish his education at the Fit Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Ricardo shows what so many in our neighborhoods and barrios tackle each day. The negativity and despair that so often attach themselves to our youth. So what make this young man so special? His resolve and commitment that led him to ask for help when it was needed. The announcement, if only to us at the table that night, to turn that desire into mo-tivation towards his future project. Ricardo not only shows us that dreams come true. He shows us that they are possible much closer to home than we often time think.

There are nearly 14 million Hispanic American/Latina women in the United States and while these women currently represent only 11% of the female population

of the United States, they are a growing force. By the year 2050, nearly one of every four women in the U.S. will be Hispanic American/Latina.

Page 13: Mi Revizta Oct/Nov 2010

All women desire and deserve good health for themselves and their families. Yet many minority women face chal-lenges to having good health. Even though minority women have many of the same health problems as white women, minority women as a group are in poorer health. Minority women use fewer health services and suffer more from disease, disabilities, and early death. Many also face huge social, economic, and cultural barriers to

having life-long good health. Yet, because minority groups are diverse, even within each group, access to health care, health behaviors, and health status can vary widely. With this in mind, The Laura Bush Institute for Women’s Health proved once again that it takes seriously the health of Latinas in Amarillo and the surrounding area by hosting its 5th annual confer-ence, “Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer” which included food, prizes, and live music. This year’s event drew in over 300 women. But it was the rhythm of la bamba that got people up dancing and having a great time. Laura Rojas, news anchor for Channel 10, enthusiastically hosted the event, along with Maury Roman director of Amarillo College’s Community Link program as the conference guest speaker. Educating and motivating Hispanic women was the main idea for the conference. Maury Roman spoke freely and openly, and caught everyone’s attention buy using fun topics that kept everyone focused as well as having fun! With a positive atmosphere she explained the importance of

vaccinations to avoid contagious diseases, toxic rela-tionships that come at a high cost to our health, low self-esteem that can add up to eight years to our age. In talking about stress, Maury added, “If you spend more than three hours a day under stress you could add up to 32 years to your age”, which frightened all of us including herself. Next came the laughter as an antidote to combat disease. Maury shared that laughter has the ability to change illnesses, help with memory, and contribute to healthier looking skin. “People who laugh often feel better, definitely look better, so let’s just all have a good laugh!” The audience showed its eagerness and began to laugh after she told a couple of jokes here and there and continued with recom-mendations. Maury shared, “Ladies, begin getting a good night’s rest, avoid hurtful relationships, exercise, take time to relax at least 5 minutes a day. Attitude plays a key role. If you do not love yourself then you can not love others”. Overall the conference made perfectly clear that our help depends above all on a good attitude and plenty of education. There is nothing that will give us as many possibilities as to believe that we can achieve it.

Longest wait in line of 3 reviewed (this stood out the most for our reviewers). Crowded inside haunt, which could lead to overkill (no pun intended) for the scary parts so the fear factor was limited. We recom-mend small groups. Theme was well thought out and use of actors & props made for a good flow to the haunt. Originality could be seen as use of layout was well thought out. Definitely one to put on the list. Worth the time and cover.

Most definitely the most original of the 3 reviewed. Sound and layout well planned. Themes flowed well which led to an overall A+ for the fear factor. Only drawback that all reviewers shared was a quick tour. Props and actors well organized and utilized. Lots of extras offered as far as merchandise goes. We suggest you pay for your picture at end. Good keepsake for remem-bering with your friends.

Short wait in line, which we found out later, was a good thing, as the layout and design need time to go through. Realistic props as well as layout and mixture of sounds made for good fear factor. Longest (time wise) of the 3 we reviewed. Creativity and originality can be seen in all aspects of haunt especially actors used (all reviewers agreed on this one). Over-all dollar value was given thumbs up. Definitely one you need to put on the list of to do’s.

Safety for children is important while celebrating the much anticipated tradition of Halloween. The safety of the children is because of the rising cases of pedestrian accidents worldwide during Halloween.

Encourage your children to wear face paint instead of face masks. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision, making it more difficult to see the traffic, and stoplights. Make sure your children are trick or treating in groups and or accompanied by an adult. Choose a costume comfortable and appropriate for the child. We must put into practice basic measures for our children’s safety during Halloween. Because Halloween is a holiday during which large numbers of children interact with strangers it is also recom-mended for parents to view the registered sex offenders in our area. For fast access to Amarillo’s registered sex offender’s visit: http://www.city-data.com/so/so-Amarillo-Texas.html Another precaution to take during Halloween is to inspect your children’s candy. Make sure you throw away any previously opened candy or any unwrapped candy. Following these safety rules should help keep your trick-or-treaters safe during this spooky holiday we call Halloween.

Until next time!

In 2008, during the last presidential election, almost 11 million Latinos voted, which was a 44% increase for Latino voter turnout four years earlier. According to current census estimates, there are 58.3 million

Latinos living in America, which accounts for almost twenty-two percent of the total population. This number continues to grow and is likely to exceed seventy million by 2012. In the last election, about 20 million Latinos did not vote. These non-voters account for over 40% of the Latino population. It is imperative to get out the Hispanic vote. In Texas alone, the Hispanic population accounts for 42% of the states population, making it the largest minority group in the state. Where is our voice in Amarillo? Voting is an essential right and responsibility for all Americans, especially those of Hispanic decent. Voting affects the future for all us. Not voting can have disastrous effects. Not voting tells the government that we do not care and we are satisfied to have unfair legis-lation imposed upon us. As Latinos, we are an important integral part of the political electorate. In an effort to better inform the Hispanic voter on the issues and proposed policies in the upcoming election, I composed a list of questions concerning key issues for the Hispanic population and submitted them to the candidates running for District 87 Texas Congres-sional seat. The following candidates submitted respons-es - democratic nominee Abel Bosquez, and republican nominee Four Price.

Question: With the growing rise in the Hispanic electorate, how do you think is the best way to reach out to this segment of the population and incorporate them into the electoral process?

Bosquez: “In order to include more of the Hispanic population in the electoral process we need to include them more within the process. We need to show them the reasons for being involved in the system and let them take the lead in their areas. Help them along the road and let them feel the success of winning.”

Price: “The most effective methods of reaching out and incorporating the Hispanic electorate concern both community involvement and education. Keeping lines of communication open and acces-sible between candidates, elected officials and voters are effective and useful means through which individuals can be encouraged to participate in our electoral process. There is absolutely no substitute for face-to-face meetings. If folks truly understand that their voice matters and has significance, then I believe they are more likely to participate in the electoral process.”

Question: According to National statistics only 66.8 percent of Texas students graduate from high school. The percentage of Hispanic students is much lower. What increased edu-cational measures do you propose will better educate our youth for the future and encourage them to graduate or even continue with higher education?

Bosquez: “We are in the first step of this process by doing away with the TAKS Test. I am going to push for vocational classes back into the schools. Students need to have an interest in what they do in school and by choosing what they do make them feel in control. They can learn a trade and know that they can get a better paying job with the skills they have learned. There is no reason why we should be a service sector when we can manufacture what we need here in our area.” Price: “I could not agree more that the workforce of tomorrow depends on our educational focus today. Specifically in our commu-nity, we face significant problems in the future if we do not motivate our children to learn. I believe that we should offer more vocational skills training to our area high school

students and make certain they are aware of opportunities to learn a trade through both high school and community college training. A four-year degree is not for everyone and we need to make sure that those students who do not intend to obtain a four-year college degree are counseled and encouraged to further a different education for themselves.

Question: With the recent legisla-tion in regards to immigration in Arizona, how do you stand on such legislation if it were proposed here? Secondly, in your opinion, who should be responsible for enforcing immigration law and protecting the borders – the federal government or the state?

Bosquez: “The federal government should be the protector of our bor-ders. We need immigration reform and it has to come from Washington DC. The law that Arizona passed only strengthens racial profiling by all law enforcement agencies. I will not support any law that violates the civil rights of another person especially when there is a question on how the process is going to be carried out.”

Price: “International border security and United States immigration laws are federal issues; however, each state has a right to enact legislation it also feels is necessary to protect its citizens. I support Arizona’s right to take measures to defend herself where the federal government has failed. Texas may likely see varying proposals similar to Arizona’s in the next legislative session. Each proposal would, of course, need scrutiny to determine if it has a dis-parate impact on our citizens in any way. I would support legislation that strengthens our border security without disenfranchising or discrimi-nating against any one segment of our Texas community.”

Question: As health care costs spiral out of control, citizens and businesses must unite in asking the Texas Legislature to bring order to the chaos of private health and government-sponsored health insurance. With higher costs and less services, Texas is home to the largest percentage of uninsured residents an estimated 6 million and over half of those are Hispanic. What can the legislature do to provide equal services to all citizens at an affordable cost?

While these are only a few of the key issues to consider in the upcoming election, there are many more and the best way to better inform yourself on the issues is to get involved. The best informed voter is knowledgeable on all the issues. Prior to Election Day, watch the news, read the paper, and better educate yourself on the issues at hand. Most importantly VOTE. Encourage others to VOTE. Tell all your friends and family members to VOTE. Volunteer to work the pools or be a poll watcher and ensure that all the rights of the Hispanic voter are protected and their rights are not infringed.

Bosquez: “We need to create and bring back manufacturing jobs that provide affordable health care pack-ages for their employees. Healthy employees have healthy families therefore bringing down the high cost of insurance and more of Texas children can have coverage.”

Price: “This is undoubtedly one of the most difficult issues facing our State and Nation at present. The fact is, the majority of coverage provided to our citizens is, and will continue to be, through small business employers. The Texas Legislature should prioritize the protections and incentives offered to small businesses in an effort to support them. The creation of state health insur-ance exchanges where private op-tions can be compared appear to be on the table now as well. This will hopefully allow competition to drive down some costs. Nearly 90% of the 6.1 million uninsured Texans have family incomes below four times the federal poverty income level. For these families and indi-viduals, health insurance affordability is a challenge. “

Question: According to the Texas Public Policy Foundation, although Texas is considered a low-tax state, it is one of the highest direct business-taxing states in the nation. In 2007, Texas achieved one of the largest surpluses in the history of the state an estimated $10 billion. Should we lower business taxes and in your opinion would that in turn stimulate growth with new jobs?

Bosquez: “Lowering taxes for small businesses and middle to low in-come people will help the economy because they will have more money to create jobs and will have more money to put into the economy. Taxes for corporations should not be given because the big corporations have been built by the hard work of

the working middle class and these are the jobs that need to be brought back to the USA and to Texas.” Price: “A low-tax, pro-growth, predictable regulatory environment is always preferable for Texans and our businesses here. Keeping our tax rates low and enticing businesses to locate in Texas will certainly stimu-late growth and jobs. Texas gained 166,100 new jobs between January and June 2010, making it one of the best states for job growth. This was no accident. Texas enjoys the world’s 11th largest economy, and I see us gaining strength. I intend to advocate on behalf of small busi-ness owners, to oppose efforts to impose any state income tax and to protect the free enterprise system we enjoy here.
