MIA (Lost Books)
The Jewish festival of Hanukkah or Chanukah (both spellings are ac-
cepted) was born out of a power struggle. During the second century BCE (before the Christian era) the
Greek empire was attempting to extend its political rule over Judea and impose Greek religion and
social traditions upon the peo-ple. The guerrilla tactics of the Maccabees, one of the Jewish tribes of the area, defeated the Greek
forces. When the Maccabees en-
tered their temple to rededicate it they found that all the oil had been
defiled by the Greeks except for one small jar, which had only enough oil to burn for one
night. However, a miracle occurred and the oil burned for eight nights. The celebration of this mira-
cle is why menorahs have eight lights or candles, (the middle ninth candle is used to light the others) a
new light being lit for each of the eight days of Hanukkah. The name
Hanukkah means dedication. Traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. Potato pancakes (known
as latkes) and jam-filled donuts are particularly popular in many Jewish households. Other Hanukkah cus-
toms include playing with four-sided tops called dreidels and exchanging
gifts. Although Hanukkah is quite well-
known in North America, due to its proximity to the Christian festival of Christmas, it is a minor Jewish holi-
day. Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are considered more
important festivals. Hanukkah begins Dec 1 after sun-
down. —R. Higgins, AVC Counsellor

The word solstice literally means
"sun standing still."
At the moment of the winter solstice, the path of the sun in
the sky over the past six months has reached its furthest southern position and now
turns northward.
For those in the northern hemisphere this means the
longest night. Conversely for
those in the southern hemi-sphere it means the longest
day. —Heidorn, K.C. (2000)

The Hogfather?
Some may have already read
Terry Pratchett’s The Hogfather.
If not, I strongly recommend it. Pratchett’s a brilliant British
author IMHO.
The plot, in brief? The Hog-
father, a Santa figure, goes missing & in order to keep the
holiday Death steps in.

“We’re planning on 600 guests: the food will be fantas-tic, there’s a really interesting mix of people who appre-ciate local products and want to support the Valley and come out to an event like this”, nous dit Nicole Robin-son de NSCC Kingstec.
