FAMILIAR FEELING: Following the 4-3 comeback win over the
Nationals on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball last night, the Dodgers
recorded their second straight win and improved to .500 for the first time
since they were 2-2 after play on April 1. Los Angeles has come up
victorious in six of its last seven contests since April 15 and has won
three of its last four games at Dodger Stadium. Tonight, the Boys in Blue
will look to go over the .500 mark for the first time this season, as they
will open a three-game series against the NL East’s Miami Marlins.
After the conclusion of the homestand on Wednesday and the travel day
to San Francisco on Thursday, the Dodgers will begin a season-high 11-
game road trip on Friday against the Giants (four games), Diamondbacks
(four games) and Padres in Monterrey, Mexico (three games).
The Dodgers went 6-1 against the Marlins last season,
including 3-1 at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles has won its last
four games against Miami, which is the longest winning streak
against the Fish since July 8, 2007-May 1, 2008.
Tonight, the first 40,000 ticketed fans in attendance will
receive the second installment of the 60th Anniversary
Collector’s Card Set: The 70’s presented by 76. The Dodgers
will also host their second special event ticket package night,
USC Night, as the package includes an exclusive t-shirt,
available at Dodgers.com/USC.
WALKING INTO HISTORY: Prior to tonight’s contest the Dodgers
are set to recall their No. 1 prospect, as rated by MLB.com and Baseball
America, right-hander Walker Buehler, who will make his 2018 debut
and his first career big league start. Buehler made three starts with
Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (3
ER/13.0 IP) and holding hitters to a .204 average, while striking out 16
against just four walks. The 23-year-old appeared in his first big league
camp this spring and appeared in two Cactus League games (one start)
for the Dodgers, allowing just one hit over 4.0 scoreless innings with
seven strikeouts against one walk. He made his Major League debut with
Los Angeles last season and made eight relief appearances, going 1-0
with a 7.71 ERA, while striking out 12 in 9.1 innings.
Over three minor league seasons (2016-18), Buehler has gone
5-3 with a 3.04 ERA and has collected one save in 34 career
games (23 starts). The hard-throwing right-hander has struck
out 147 batters against just 38 walks in 106.2 career minor
league innings, while also limiting the opposition to a .200
average. The Lexington, Kentucky, native was drafted by Los
Angeles in the first round (24th overall) of the 2015 First-Year
Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University.
According to Stats LLC., at 23 years and 269 days, Buehler
would become just the fourth Dodger pitcher since 2013 (Julio
Urías, Zach Lee and Matt Magill) to start a game before his
24th birthday. The club also ranks third in the big leagues with
the fewest starts by a pitcher 24 or younger since the 2013
season:
Fewest Starts by Pitchers 24 and Younger - Since 2013
(based on age at time of game)
Chicago Cubs 21
Los Angeles Angels 50
Los Angeles Dodgers 51
San Francisco Giants 59
Baltimore Orioles 94
FINDING THE STRIKE ZONE: The Dodgers’ 3.53 ERA ranks
seventh in the NL, but they are making the opposition earn it as their 55
walks are the fewest on the senior circuit. Just two teams in baseball
have issued fewer free passes, as the Oakland A’s have walked 48 and
the Cleveland Indians have walked 43 hitters.
Los Angeles currently holds the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio
in the National League with a 3.87 (213 K/55 BB) mark. The
Dodgers posted the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio in the NL
last season (3.50), while ranking second to the Indians (3.98)
for the big league lead.
The Dodgers have averaged 10.02 strikeouts per nine innings,
which ranks third in the NL, trailing just the Nationals (10.54)
and Mets (10.35).
YAZ HANDS: Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal is off to his best start
of his career and has been the club’s best hitter thus far, as he currently
ranks fourth in the National League with a .349 batting average (22-for-
63), while also ranking among the NL leaders in on-base percentage
(.446, 5th), OPS (1.033, 6th), and slugging percentage (.587, 10th).
Grandal is one of the few Dodger catchers in franchise history to have
an OPS over 1.000 in the season’s first month:
Dodgers Catchers, Highest OPS in March/April – All-Time
(minimum 50 PA)
1953 Roy Campanella 1.156
1977 Steve Yeager 1.117
1955 Roy Campanella 1.081
1973 Joe Ferguson 1.050
2018 Yasmani Grandal 1.033 (.446 + .587)
1998 Mike Piazza 1.022
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
According to Stats LLC., Grandal’s 1.033 OPS through the
first 17 games is also the best mark by a Dodgers catcher in the
first 17 games played since Mike Piazza, who posted a 1.105
mark in 1995.
Grandal extended his career-high hitting streak to 11 games
last night with a two-run double in the sixth inning. During the
run, Grandal has posted a .349 (15-for-43)/.451/.605 slashline
with seven runs, five doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI since
April 7.
ATTACK FIRST: The Dodgers have won a vast majority of the games
when they score first, going 9-2 (.818), but recorded their first win of the
season yesterday when allowing the first run, as they have gone 1-8
(.111) this year. The club currently holds the second largest win
percentage difference in the league when scoring first versus allowing
the first run according to Stats LLC.:

San Diego Padres .857 (6-1) .125 (2-14) .732

New York Yankees .769 (10-3) .143 (1-6) .626
Texas Rangers .700 (7-3) .077 (1-12) .623
THE MAN’S GONE FISHING: Throughout his 16-year big league
career, Dodger infielder Chase Utley has seen success against the
Marlins, as he has posted a .278/.369/.478 slashline with 31 doubles,
seven triples, 30 home runs and 127 RBI in 185 games. Among active
players, Utley has played the most games and has driven in the most runs
against the Marlins, while ranking second in home runs and third in hits
(188) and runs (114).
Not to go unnoticed, but Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp has
also seen success against the Marlins throughout his career,
posting a .296/.363/.447 slashline with 40 runs, 11 doubles,
nine home runs, 29 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 68 games.
