Influenced by Anthony Ames’ Garden Pavilion, the gallery is elevated above the retaining wall looking into the courtyard. Two columns rise in front, supporting beams that penetrate the container. The interior columns rise through the retaining wall creating an illusion of levitation. A light scoop inspired by Steven Holl’s Chapel of St. Ignatius is tapered to maximize filtered light into the space.

Art Barn at UTD

14

Page 15: Micah Schneider's Architectural Design Portfolio

The Art Barn at the University of Texas at Dallas was scheduled for demolition to make room for resident studios and gallery spaces. Having won a merit award from the Dallas AIA in 1979, the barn - while different from the typical UTD building - served as an icon for the art department and the University. Efforts were put forward to preserve the barn while adding necessary accommodations for its expanding program, despite the fact that renovations would cost millions. This proposal retains much of the original structure, while integrating a cantilevering volume composed of materials reflecting the typical UTD campus building.

In response to growing residential spaces and the addition of the Tarrant County College Trinity River East Campus, the Trinity River Vision Authority developed a proposal that would expand the riverfront and bring people to enjoy its amenities. A canopy was chosen to provide shelter to the boathouse and restaurant while preventing those buildings from disrupting the organic, fluid movement of the environment. To accommodate groups and events that host up to around 300 people, a partially covered amphitheater is located to the right of the cafe’. Lamps are suspended where the columns and beams meet, providing light for joggers and late night diners. Three fixtures float on the water providing a subtle glow which enhances the reflection of shore activity while directing boat traffic to the docks.

Designed from the site up, this project explores the golden ratio and spiral, evident in the curvature of the dock and the path cut into the patio. Private and public programs extend out from one another at 90°, joined by a spiral staircase and capped with a circular skylight. The main living space is extended over the deck as an exaggerated cantilever. While a single column appears to support the full load, the volume is primarily supported by bracing which extends into the hillside. Stacking the program according to privacy requirements insulates the most intimate spaces from less familiar visitors. The guest entrance is on the main floor where all public and semi-public programming is located, while a garage is cut into the site at the lower level adjacent to the service spaces.

This model was constructed from a 3D print, which was coated in clay and contained inside of a small wooden box. Silicone was poured onto the print and allowed to dry before replacing the clay with more silicone. The resulting mold was filled with hydrocal, permitted to harden, and sanded clean. After repeating the process 16 times, the panels were secured into a wooden box supporting a L.E.D. fixture behind a fluorescent diffusing panel. The result is a glowing indirect light similar to a television set, demonstrating the panel’s ability to mitigate direct light into usable indirect light.

The only major dead-end road in Manhattan is Kenmare St., which caps the end of the Williamsburg Bridge. Located adjacent to Steven Holl’s Storefront and a small triangular pedestrian park, this site terminates the direct path from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The parallel extrusion is tapered to the entryway, emphasizing and prolonging the slot condition. This establishes a square plaza which is reiterated by a floating volume wrapped in stairs.
