What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)?

• Genetic disease• Attacks motor neurons in

spinal cord• Leads to muscle

weakness and atrophy

DS2 (Intro) → DS1→ DS1 → DS3 → DS2 (Devices) → DS4 → Summary → DS3 → DS2 (Devices) → DS4 → Summary

• #1 genetic killer of children < age 2 (95% mortality)

• SMA type II ~ age 20 = 77%

Why design for SMA?

• Recent breakthroughs in research– SMN1 and SMN2 genes– NIH and NINDS massive

funding– Research (JHU, Columbia,

MIT, Stanford)• Lots of new therapy

treatments

BUT….• Current evaluations are

subjective, inaccurate, and insensitive.

Clinicians Need:• Robust and quantitative

motion capture and analysis system

In a Nutshell…

• SMA is a deadly genetic disease

• Many new therapies coming out

• Need for a robust, quantitative motion capture and analysis system

• Current devices are either very advanced or too simple

• We propose:– a device to capture &

evaluate 2D movements on frictionless, horizontal plane
