Chapter 2 Water water everywhere

In the Peggy Sue there was always something to do. Stella would bring her smelly wetness with her everywhere but Michael and his family never once regretted bringing her along with them. When mum felt sick Stella would always cuddle into her. Michael had a lucky charm it was a football from his best friend Eddie.

Michael read his log of where he had been. Some of the places that he had been to were Spain, Africa and Brazil. Michael’s last words on his log were … she hasn’t got her harness clipped on. The rest of the log was just empty pages. Michael had been steering the boat when he noticed Stella didn’t have her harness on so he called her over to put it on but she wouldn’t come. So Michael left the wheel and went forward to get her. Then Michael’s ball rolled over the side of the boat. The sails started blowing in the wind and Michael new that he shouldn’t have left the wheel. Suddenly Michael and Stella where thrown off the boat. No one knew Michael and Stella had been thrown overboard because they were all down below.

Michael was all alone in the sea. Michael looked forward and spotted something bobbing up and down he thought it was Stella, but when he swam towards it he realised it was his football. Michael fell asleep only to discover when he woke he was stretched out on sand and Stella was beside him. He got up and heard howling it was Gibbons. He walked around looking for something to eat and drink. He found a small cave at one end of the beach. He went to sleep. When they woke up the next morning Stella was nowhere to be seen and Michael was bitten all over. When Michael got up he realised that Stella was over beside a rock drinking water. When he went over to her he found water, fish and red bananas. Michael made a fire. He looked in front of him and there was an orang-utan, or so he thought. He went to get more leaves and wood for the fire. When he came back he noticed the orang-utan putting sand on the fire. It was a man not an orang-utan.

His name was Kensuke, he was thin and wore a pair of tattered breeches bunched at the waist. Michael lit a fire Kensuke shouted at him and started stamping on it to make it go out. Michael went for a swim and Kensuke shouted at him. Kensuke drew a line cutting the smaller end of the island off from the larger one. He said to Michael that the small part of the island belonged to Michael but the big part was his. Michael was repairing his Chinese hat, replacing some of the palm leaves when he looked up and saw a ship on the horizon.

Michael became angry knowing that if he had been able to light a fire there may have been some hope. He decided he would gather a beacon of wood, but wouldn’t light it until he saw a ship. A storm broke out, it was 4 days before the storm blew over. Michael looked around and to his amazement he saw a ship. He lit the beacon, Kensuke came up to Michael and put it out. Michael was furious, he decided he didn’t care was Kensuke said so he went into the sea. He swam out as far as he could. He then heard Kensuke shouting Dameda ! Abunai ! Michael didn’t care he kept swimming out to sea until it was too late. He was stung by a jellyfish.

Michael lay in the cave for days but every time he woke Kensuke was there. His enemy, his captor had become his saviour. Kensuke seemed to know everything there was to know in the forest. Kensuke taught Michael to paint and draw he taught him how to fish as well. Kensuke made a paint brush using orang-utan hair and a short piece of bamboo. Michael taught Kensuke how to speak English. Kensuke asked Michael to tell him how he came to his Island because they could now both communicate with each other. When Michael had finished his story Kensuke said so you like football, when I was little I play football too. Kensuke grabbed Michael by the arm and took him to the end of the beach and Michael followed. He began to pull away at the undergrowth. To Michael’s surprise it came out easily. Underneath was part of a boat, lying at the bottom of the boat beside a long oar was his football. Kensuke reached for it and passed it to Michael. It was softer, lighter, cracked and discoloured, but Michael could still make out Eddie’s name.

In this chapter Kensuke told Michael about how he came to the island. That he used to live in Japan and that he went to the Navy and became a doctor on big warship. Also on this chapter Michael sent a bottle away into the sea with a message inside it but soon after Stella brought it back.

In this chapter Kensuke realised that Michael and him were quite alike Michael just wants to be with his family and Kensuke missed his family. They decided to build a beacon to attract the next ship that passed by. In the middle of the night Kensuke woke Michael up and told him to follow him, Kensuke was serious. It was the night of the turtles Kensuke told Michael that every year around this time baby turtles were born many of them died because of birds coming down and eating them. Kensuke and Michael helped the turtles get out to the sea. Then Kensuke realised that the turtles do not know what they will find out there but they go anyway. Maybe they teach me a good lesson he had thought. He had made up his mind that when one day a ship come, they light fire and they find us then I go like turtles they not know what they will find and neither do I.

Michael thought that he had found a ship he hurried down to get Kensuke while telling him to light the fire. Kensuke looked through the binoculars, it was the killer men from before he could remember the ship. Kensuke and Michael gathered up all the orang-utans apart from Kikanbo and went into the cave. After the shooting Michael and Kensuke went to look for Kikanbo on the way they found two dead mother gibbons they buried them. They walked sorrowfully back to the cave, on the way back Kikanbo ambushed them. It was such a good moment a great moment. As they were walking a few weeks later looking for shells to paint they could see a white. They rushed back to the beacon and lit it. It was the Peggy Sue. Kensuke wouldn’t come he said that an Empire would not leave his kingdom so he would not leave is. Michael and Stella went with their parents on the Peggy Sue.
