The UT Medical Joint Replacement Center is a 30-bed facility designed as a part of the UT Medical Center campus in Knoxville, TN. The overall goal is to create a patient-friendly environment that is innovative and provides transformative care. The Joint Replacement floor acts as an example to its neighboring spaces, placing emphasis on operational efficiency as well as sustainable building practices.
The thoughtful design features energetic yet natural feel that is expressed in modern materials. The main lobby and circulation system is designed to promote easy wayfinding for visitors and outpatients, thus reducing anxiety and confusion for patients and families. Departmental adjacencies allow for maximum spatial efficiency. Multiple greenwalls are placed throughout the circulation path to create a nature-inclined healing environment for both the patients and staff. Daylight is integrated into the core carefully by use of electronic smartglass. 002

Quadrate forms envelop the major spaces within the project and are a reminder of the ups and downs of re-covery. The implied directionality of this form is remi-niscent of the importance of forward movement in our bodies and our minds. This system of volumes and lines creates a language that defines, divides and develops space into functional zones according to the program. These abstract zones create energy while defining space.

Natural daylight infiltrates the building through a system of electric frosted glass that changes transparency with the flip of an electrical switch. A film that is inbetween two layers of glass reacts to an electrical current, caus-ing a reaction that allows light to pass through the frost-ed glazing. When turned off, the electrical current ceases and the glass remains fogged.
The wrapped ceiling in the corridors travels up and around the dropped acoustical ceiling panels. The lamp-ing of corridor illumination is concealed to give a soft glowing effect to the space while soffits break up the length of the corridor. Angled doorways and white-finish soffits push natural daylight through the space. These angled doorways create spacious light niches as well as provide a direct path for rolling beds to move in and out of the patient rooms.
Armstrong Rejuvenations sheet vinyl flooring maintains the feel of natural materials and reinforces the integrity of the linear space. Parador Clickboard envelops the nurse station for easy wayfinding as well as emphasizes the nurse zone. Clickboard and greenwalls neutralize toxins within the air, improving air quality in the most central-ized location of the space.

A break in the ceiling soffits allows bright natural light from clerestory win-dows to diffuse friskily through the space. The soft bright light illuminates the circulation path that is directly below it.
Adjustable lighting is essential to retail spaces. Track lighting, many re-cessed cans, and pendant lights are mounted on adjustable fixtures that allow the space to change with different displays. Angled track lights allow for dimensional cross lighting of displays.
Spaces are organized such that collaboration, privacy, and everywhere in-between are available. The Me spaces are the most private, while the We spaces are aimed at collaboration. Joint spaces cater both to privacy and collaboration, having elements such as small-group setting or adjustable privacy panels. 003

kerfed local reclaimed wood respdonds to functional demands
adjustable lumbar molds to curve of low back
Break features a unique component: Greenspace. Greenspace refers to the area of the work envi-ronment that is recreationally focused; we believe that if we have moments of rejuvenation in our environments at work, we are happier and more efficient workers. Therefore this zone is called the greenspace, being green by being more efficient in the workplace. Greenspace features casual and modular lounge-style seating, a large flatscreen monitor, a kitchen and even walkstations.
Filzfelt Wall Panels is an acoustical system that adds softness, texture and color to the space. It is clip-fastened, making it easy to hang. The sys-tem is more than just an attractive and practical surface - it is tackable, accordingly becoming an immense space-saver and collaborative tool.
Just as Steelcase ergonomic furniture yields to the form of the body, the kerfing of local and reclaimed wood allows the wood to mold to the spatial needs of its respective zone.

McClung Warehouses are located on the edge of downtown in Knoxville, TN. The main goal of this project is to activate the area and bring life and safety into the surrounding streets. Accordingly, the project is programmed by zones of action and potential busi-ness. Spaces are stacked to provide an element of refuge.
To activate the space, volumes within the interior begin to shif t allowing the building to interact with itself and its context differ-ently. Living walls and greenspace on the site attract visitors and residents alike.

Located adjacent to the train tracks, greenspace and a gathering terrace create a unified zone for people to gather and socialize. A living wall panel system responds and acts as an insulation method to the extreme loudness and vibration from the many sets of noisy tracks. A light well allows light to dive into the core of the building. A suspended side entry allows tenants and residents a private entry from the street.

Presentation is one of the most critically impor tant aspects of French fine dining cuisine. The Santoku knife informs the design of Cou-teau French Fine Dining restaurant. The contemprary knife slices to produce clean lines and various edged shapes and textures. The exciting rapid knife technique of a skilled chef is translated into bright colors and sharp lines. This restaurant design calls upon the exploratious feeling of travel and the rich indulgence of fine dining. Spatial progression is noted by directional simplification of material, quelling anxiety from everyday life and advancing toward the richness of a pleasurable experience through food. The dining space bursts with an ambient warm glow that entices guests into the feeling of the moment, imploring the spontaneous notion of travel and adventure.

The formations of coral reefs inspire this project. Winding circula-tion reveals the manner in which a fish weaves through underwater systems of complex coral structures. Just as the walls curve to en-velop interior volumes, these corals provide shelter and protection to their inhabiting marine life. Consequently, the intimate interior spaces are enveloped by curving walls to result in protection and privacy. The residence is organized around the maintenance of pri-vate and social space. Social space is the first point of access and has the most open design. The most exclusive space is positioned at the end of the mazy circulation path in order to deter visitors. The focus of this busy chef’s home is on privacy, leisure space, and a spacious kitchen. The home as a whole concentrates on privacy, relaxation, and cooking. 006

CONCEPTUALIZING COLOR
expansiondominant planes
Influenced by Le Corbusier, Richard Meier was interested in the nuances in perspective view and accordingly the expansion and contraction of the visual field. The Smith House is comprised of expanding and contracting vol-umes that contain a contrasting focal point. This duality gives way to a primary and secondary spatial experience.
Colors from the Salubra color palette define the roles of different elements within the interior residential land-scape. The heaviest and most advancing colors are applied to the elements which divide the program into private and public zones. The light colors indicate the spaces which are intended to recede almost weight-lessly.
