KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Thomas R. Wilmot, PhD
A native of Montana, Tom Wilmot has a great affinity for nature.
He developed an interest in entomology early in life, chasing
butterflies while on camping trips with the family. His professional
career began by selling insects to students taking entomology
classes at the local college. His interest in mosquitoes in particular
was sparked by the creation of a mosquito control program in his
hometown of Great Falls. He started working for that program as a
janitor and moved to field inspector upon graduation from high
school. He continued to work summers for mosquito control while
majoring in entomology at Montana State University (MSU).
Following graduation from MSU he moved on to Oregon State
University (OSU) where he received a M.S. in entomology with
emphasis on pest management. He conducted research on the
biology and control of the strawberry crown moth and other pests
of strawberries, caneberries, and seed crops in Oregon. With
colleagues at OSU and Ohio Agricultural Research Center, he
developed a pheromone baited trap for strawberry crown moth
surveillance. After organizing a new mosquito control program in
Yakima, Washington and directing that program for two years, Tom
returned to graduate school at the UCLA school of Public Health,
earning MPH and PhD in epidemiology with research focusing on
life history of Culex quinquefasciatus.
Upon graduation from UCLA, Tom was informed by Mrs. Wilmot
that it was time to try working for a living and they made their way
to Michigan for what turned out to be a 30-year career with
Midland County Mosquito Control. During his time in Midland, he
also served on the Dow Corning Speakers Bureau, the Midland
County Gypsy Moth Suppression TAC, the Local Emergency
Planning Committee, and as adjunct instructor at Saginaw Valley
State University. In 2015 Tom moved to Naples, Florida where he
served variously as Entomology Consultant, Director, and Deputy
Director for the Collier Mosquito Control Program. At Collier MCD,
he gained experience on the front lines in control of container
Aedes mosquito vectors of chikungunya and Zika viruses. In
addition to his work with mosquito control programs, Tom served
as consultant to the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Agency for International
Development. Tom spent the last four months as Team Lead for
the CDC Zika response vector control team.
Tom was a charter member of MMCA and has been a member of
the American Mosquito Control Association, American Society of
Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Society for Vector Ecology,
Michigan Entomological Society, and Entomological Society of
America. He served as Regional Director for the Society for Vector
Ecology and the American Mosquito Control Association and as the
President of the Michigan Mosquito Control Association and the
American Mosquito Control Association.
Tom and his wife, Gail, have two children and three lovely
granddaughters.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
J. Lyell Clarke, III, PhD
Lyell Clarke is the President and CEO of Clarke and all
affiliated companies.
Lyell has spent more than 25 years in the Entomology
field. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Entomology
from the University of Kentucky, and went on to receive
his PhD in Entomology from Iowa State University. He
began his career with Clarke in 1986 as a Control
Consultant. After gaining a solid grounding in the
business, he became Vice-President for the company. In
1996, upon his father’s retirement, he stepped into the
role of President/CEO.
In 2008, Lyell led the company in a re-visioning of the
company based on a platform of sustainability. His
personal passion for what sustainability can mean
propelled Clarke to redefining itself as a company with
greater purpose. Significant goals were set and
achieved, enabling three sustainability reports to be
produced to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) criteria
and review. His vision is creating a new perspective on
the role and change that a small to medium size
company can make in society.
Lyell serves on two advisory boards: The Fowler Center
for Sustainable Value at the Weatherhead School of
Management at Case Western Reserve University,
Cleveland, OH, and privately held Weigel's Farm Stores,
Inc. based in Powell, TN.
Lyell and his wife Kathy, have five children. Oldest, John
works in marketing for craft beer manufacturer, New
Belgium Brewery. Katy is operating a start-up organic
farm and is building a network serving Chicago metro
area market outlets and restaurants. Robert works as an
operations supervisor out of Clarke’s Roselle, IL service
center.
In 2006, the family made the decision to expand and
traveled to Russia in order to adopt Joseph. Then, in
November 2010, Lyell and Kathy adopted another son,
Timothy, who was 2 years old. With two young
elementary-aged children in the Clarke household, Lyell
and his wife Kathy are re-experiencing the rewards (and
exhaustion) of being parents!!
