"This year's race (Medtronic TC 1 Mile) will also feature a pair of $10,000 "Time Bounties," if themen's and women's champions better four minutes and 4:32, respectively."-- USA Track & Field News Release, 5/11/10
If you've ever wondered what the women's equivalent to a 4:00 minute mile would be, here's ananswer.
==============================================================================Cleveland Adventure: Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, 1/2 Marathon & 10K, 5/16/10==============================================================================Really looking forward to being in Cleveland this weekend for the 33rd Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. The money race here is the 10K; the marathon has prize money, too. A half marathon was added in2005 and a 5K was added last year. Both the marathon and the half marathon are sold out, but this isa 10K worth traveling to. In fact a number of Michigan elites have picked up checks at this race. Many of the international runners will also be running the Crim 10 Mile.
Cleveland is waterfront, MetroParks, Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, imposing architecture, great trendyrestaurants and a terrific post-race party with a rock concert and a beer garden. Come back in thesummer and take the boat tour (school groups own it during May).

=======================================MRN On the Road: Grand Rapids Adventure=======================================
Congratulations to Race Director, Kristin Aidiff; Elite Athlete Coordinator, Greg Meyer; title sponsor,Fifth Third Bank; and all the staff, sponsors and volunteers who put on a hugely successful Fifth ThirdRiver Bank Run on Saturday. 21,000 runners and walkers participated in the largest gathering for theevent in its 33 year history. The addition of the 10K distance two years ago continues to be popularand this race uses all the communications tricks in the Internet to connect participants with the race:Twitter, Facebook, blogs and email newsletters.
So many cool things about the Fifth Third River Bank Run:USA 25K National Championship gathers national runners and masters runners at the top of theirgame, including Michiganders Katie McGregor, Stephan Shay, Nick Stanko, Paul Aufdemberge,Marybeth Reader, Dot McMahan, Doug Goodhue. Jason Hartmann comes to his hometown racefrom his digs in Colorado and successfully defends his 4th place finish. 25K distance requiressignificant strategy to win. Many are doing the USA Running Circuit series.
From left, Carl Rundell, 2nd Master; Marybeth Reader, Masters Champion; Michigan Runner editor, Scott Sullivan; Paul Aufdemberge, Masters Champion
The sky spit a little drizzle and blew some breezes, but many runners said the wind didn't bother them.
In addition to all the fun generated by the race, there is much to enjoy in Grand Rapids. We wereenlightened and delighted by many exhibits in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Friday night on raceweekend is also prom night for many local schools. Young women in gorgeous gowns with handsomedates show up in restaurants all over downtown. One prom goes to the Grand Rapids Public Museumand they ride the merry-go-round in the museum. How romantic is that? You can see the merry-go-round from across the river and the bridges.

=======================Ian's Innards: The Love=======================
The Love
All in all is all we are.
Kurt Cobain-Nirvana
Shimmering smile and sunshine eyes beam fearless faithfulness asshe sings. Pressed into the next pew, I consider my youngestdaughter’s delicate Bible speak, “Jesus loves the little children.”Forever saddled with a doubtful soul, I question whether I can achievesatisfiable comprehension of our inevitable unknowns. Scouring herwords for identification, I carefully shuffle “Jesus” to the currentlyimponderable pile of my mind’s mess, but I’m stopped at “loves.”This abstraction must exist; how else can all enduring familialforgiveness be understood?
Our house is as functional and dysfunctional as any. The girlsscrap incessantly, respect is granted and trampled, seemingly simultaneously and our parental requestsare sassed aside almost as steadily as we disregarded our parents’. Yet, we subsist.
Attention diverted to she on my knee, I wistfully smell the innocence of her nestled head as we dipand dodge for a glimpse of her sister up front. Though that very morning her unbridled bath rainedwith porcelain piercing “discipline,” the moment holds only love and contentment; perfectrealignment.
Running used to be realized by success, acclaim, titles; now I’m not so sure. The intermittent flowof training, racing, winning, losing has delivered me here; a wavering hologram of myself. PrincipalPBs eons behind, I persist in extracting significant chunks of being into the effort required to retain asemblance of starting line strength; why? It’s sweat well spilled with friends, it’s pressurized use of anever viable skeleton, it’s limited achievement with ongoing enjoyment. How it began and how it ends,I couldn’t say, but it looks like I’m finally running for the love. -- Ian Forsyth
Ian Forsyth finished the FifthThird River Bank Run in 1:21:10--just a few seconds behind 2009champion, Isaack Kimaiyo.

========================================================E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Apple or Pear?========================================================When it comes to the whole piece of fruit, pears are slightly higher in fiber, while apples have the edgeon Vitamin C. Both are excellent choices for your summer fruit bowl because they tend not to attractfruit flies and can hold up against the warmer days.
However, when it comes to body shape and health, pears are superior. People who primarily store fatin their hips, upper arms and thighs are said to have a pear shape, while those who tend to storegreater amounts of fat in the abdomen are apple shape. The fat stored around the abdomen is calledvisceral fat and is associated with greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolicsyndrome. While all of us gain visceral fat as we age, a healthy diet and regular exercise can reducethe visceral fat as long as you keep doing it. Research led by Slentz, in 2005 studied sedentary overweight men and women who followed a 30 minute walk program, 6 times/week for 8 months.Subjects lost 7% of their abdominal fat. However, those who stopped participating in a regularexercise program, increased their visceral fat stores by 9%. Their research not only suggested thatapples benefit greatly from regular exercise, but that if you yo-yo exercise, you can do a lot of damageto your long term health.
