Such experience is an example of subsea structures abandonment by converting the platform infrastructure into in situ artificial reefs which support the marine life. The jackets were cut in two pieces, repositioned (vertically) and modified by making holes on the bracings to allow the fishes to have lairs inside, with following achievements:
• To avoid/reduce the platform removal costs • To contribute to the productivity of marine ecosystems • To the ecological benefit of increasing the biodiversity of the area • To a destination for sport divers, thanks to the exceptional richness of marine life developed around
the artificial reef • To potentially increase farming and fisheries
“Paguro” was officially defined as "Site of Community Interest " in the “EU Natura 2000 network” and classified as an official nature reserve area of the Italian State.
