    through which the aims and habits of a group of people

    lives on from one generation to another.

    Generally it occurs through any experience that has a

    formative effect on way one thinks , feels or acts. Incustom and values from one generation to another. E.G.

    Education helps us realise our potential and set our aim in life.Example-A person in abilities to sing become a musician withtraining. Using the God given talent, one can achieve success inlife.

    Values guide us in our quest for knowledge and happiness. Theytrain our attitudes. Values of honesty, love, loyalty, perseverance,compassion, courage etc. are to be developed from young age. Theymust become part of our character reflected in our daily life. Theymust guide our decision and motivate our actions.

    EDUCATION IN INDIAEDUCATION in INDIA is provided by the public sector as well as the

    private sector, with control and funding coming from three levels:

    Federal, State, and Local. The Nalanda university was the oldestuniversity-system in world. Western education become ingrained in

    Indian society with the establishment of the British Raj.

    EDUCATION in INDIA falls under the control of both the UnionGovernment and States, with some responsibilities lying with the

    Union and States having autonomy for others. The various articles of

    Indian constitution provide for education as a fundamental right.

    Most universities in India are controlled by the Union or the State

    Government.

    EDUCATIONSince Independence in 1947, there has been

    appreciable progress in the field of education andliteracy. The literacy rate increased from 18.3%in 1951 to 52.2% in 1991. The primary schoolsincreased from 0.209 million in 1951 to0.573million in 1994. The percentage ofenrolment of students in higher levels has alsoincreased tremendously.

    At the time of Independence there were only 25universities. There are now over 225 includingdeemed ones.

    UNIVERSALISATION OF ELEMENTARY

    EDUCATIONUniversalisation of elementary education, eradication of illiteracy in the agegroups 15-35 and strengthening of vocational education have been themajor thrust areas of the Eighth Plan. To achieve these goals both formaland informal besides open channels of learning are being used.

    A scheme of Vocationalisation of Secondary Education was also started inFebruary 1988. The National Open School scheme has been also veryuseful in improving the standards of education in the people. TheCountrywide Classroom (CWCR) programme telecast by the U.G.C. andNovadaya Vidyalaya scheme have helped much in providing good qualityeducation to Indian people. Novadaya Vidyalayas are residential co-educational schools, mainly for students from rural areas.
