Overview of IBM Rational System ArchitectRational System Architect is comprehensive enterprise architecture software that provides fullyintegrated support across four keys domains: business, information, systems, and technology. It isused for modeling to capture complex knowledge about organizations and related technology.

Empowered with this knowledge, executives, decision makers, and managers can analyze andoptimize current capabilities, because they will have a more thorough understanding of theorganizational structures, portfolio of business strategies, business processes, information flow, applications, and technology infrastructure. The result is an enhanced collaboration betweenstakeholders and improvement in the organization effectiveness to proactively respond to businesschanges and an enhanced ability to consider new capabilities.

Rational System Architect includes the Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF) thatassists the U.S. Government departments and agencies in incorporating and using the U.S. Officeof Management and Budget (OMB) Reference Models, as well as the subsequent creation andpublishing of OMB Exhibit 300 and Exhibit 53 reports.

In addition, Rational System Architect is the most widely used enterprise architecture solutionin support of the U.S. Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF). It provides thecapabilities for building models representing U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) architectures andautomatically generates DoDAF work products and reports.

What you need to know before you startTerms and utilitiesInstalling and configuring Rational System Architect is a two-part process:

1. The first part is installing the software on the workstation.2. The second part is connecting Rational System Architect to an RDBMS (rational database

management system).

Rational System Architect depends on Microsoft® Windows® features provided in the latestservice packs and operating system upgrades. It has a native reporting engine to produce variousreports. It also has the capability to produce Microsoft® Excel and Microsoft® Word reports. Thiscapability requires these products to be installed on the workstation.

Rational System Architect also requires a license to unlock its various features. The licenses areavailable as either node-locked (user) licenses, which are tied to a specific workstation, or asfloating (server) licenses.

Rational System Architect encyclopedias

Rational System Architect provides an underlying storage mechanism for its repository to storeall diagrams and definitions, among other information. Consult the Rational System ArchitectInstallation Guide for software and hardware requirements.

This Rational System Architect repository is called an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia isa database within a Microsoft SQL Server instance. There are two types: enterprise andprofessional.

• Enterpriseencyclopedias are databases that have role-based access control and instance-level access control. These encyclopedias are attached to a Rational System Architectcatalog that controls access to these enterprise encyclopedias. These types of encyclopediasare managed by the Catalog Manager, an optional Rational System Architect add-on.

• Professional encyclopedias are standard Rational System Architect encyclopedias that arenot attached to a catalog.

Encyclopedias with Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Express

SQL Server and SQL Express are RDBMS (relational database management systems) that runon platforms (physical hardware, such as workstations or servers). Both SQL Server and SQLExpress run only on Microsoft operating systems.

SQL Express is a free, lightweight version of SQL Server. Rational System Architect bundles SQLExpress with its installation files. The Startup wizard provides an option to install SQL Express ona workstation.

SQL Server and SQL Express instances are a way of having more than one SQL server runningon a physical server or workstation. The databases and their objects (tables and views) arecreated within a SQL Server instance. Rational System Architect identifies the instance name bythe hostname and the instance name in this format:<hostname>\<instance name>.

Rational System Architect encyclopedias are actual databases. These encyclopedias can becreated only by using Rational System Architect, and they reside within a SQL Server instance, asFigure 1 shows.

In Figure 1, the tree view, shows a SQL Server instance called "RSA" running on a physical serverwith the hostname of IBM-MAX0Q2AIFG2. Within the IBM-MAX0Q2AIFG2\RSA instance areseveral Rational System Architect encyclopedias, such as Tutorial and Samples.

The Encyclopedia Manager is a utility that provides a set of tools for maintaining Rational SystemArchitect encyclopedias. It includes a subset of administrative functions in SQL Server EnterpriseManager. It provides the ability to attach, detach, back up, and restore Rational System Architectencyclopedias. It is also used to create logins to the SQL Server instances and to define roles anduser access to the encyclopedias.

The Startup Wizard

The Startup Wizard is the tool used to configure the settings for Rational System Architectinstallation. You start it by selecting Help > Startup Wizard.

You can use the wizard for these tasks:

• Install SQL Server Express to the local workstation• Connect to an existing SQL Server (or SQL Express) located on the workstation• Connect to an existing SQL Server (or SQL Express) located on the network

The wizard also provides the options for selecting the default framework and configuring thesample encyclopedia projects.

License requirements

Rational System Architect requires a valid license to unlock its features. Rational System Architectuses the FlexNet License Server to manage the licenses. This license server is automaticallyinstalled when Rational System Architect is installed and runs as a Windows service. The licensesare stored in a file called license.dat.

FlexNet licenses are available as either node-locked (user) licenses or floating (server) licenses.

Floating licenses

Floating (server) licenses are accessible on a network and are not tied to one particularworkstation. Instead, the license is tied to the workstation or server where the FlexNet LicenseServer is installed. In such configuration, not every workstation running Rational System Architectsoftware requires its own license.dat file. Instead, floating licenses provide a pool of licenses thatcan be shared among all Rational System Architect workstations. All floating licenses are placed inone license.dat file. The number of Rational System Architect workstation that can run concurrentlyis determined by the number of purchased floating licenses.

The floating configuration requires the FlexNet License Server to be network accessible by allRational System Architect workstations. Each workstation running Rational System Architect usesor "consumes" a license from the FlexNet License Server.

FlexNet License Server provides a graphical user interface program called LMTOOLS to managethe floating licenses. LMTOOLS functions include the start and stop actions for the lmgrddaemon,

which manages the licenses and the port number of the server to communicate with RationalSystem Architect. LMTOOLS is installed using the IBM Rational License Server TL setup.

Node-locked licenses

For a node-locked (user) license, the license is tied to a specific workstation. In such aconfiguration, every workstation running Rational System Architect requires having its own specificlicense.dat file.

Locate the license file or the license serverThe environment variables TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE points to either one of these:

• The license server in the form of port_number@license_server if you are using a floatinglicense.

• The license.dat file path if you are using node-locked licenses.

Type Set in an MS-DOS command prompt to verify the value of the TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILEvariable. The Set command lists all currently set variables, including theTELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE variable.

Merge license filesEach Rational System Architect feature requires a license. All licenses for the various featuresmust reside in a single license.dat file. If you received a license file from IBM to unlock anadditional feature, you must merge the content of the new license file with the existing one.
