• NASA: Established in 1959, NASA’s mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research.

• NASA/JPL wanted to find a means of using the Web to make large amounts of information about Mars available to the public, while engaging people in the excitement of discovery and in improving their own knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

• NASA/JPL worked with Microsoft to create an interactive, visually fun and appealing Web site called BeAMartian with Windows Azure

• Benefits:− Windows Azure offers unparalleled scale

− Rapid scale out & global reachDuring one period of activity shortly after the launch, the site—which was running on 10 servers—experienced a large spike in visitor traffic. It took site managers less than 10 minutes to make an additional 20 servers available using the cloud, which was more than enough to handle the sudden increase in activity.

Page 10: Microsoft Virtual Academy. Microsoft Virtual Academy.

• Pottermore: Windows Azure offered Pottermore the flexibility required to build a massively scalable website in just three months. Live April 14th, 2012

• Pottermore attracted 1 billion page views in a little over two weeks

• More than 10 million unique users to date have visited the site

• The average user visits 43 pages and spends 20 minutes on the site

• The site continues to attract 25,000 new account sign-ups daily

• Benefits:− Capacity planning was an incredible challenge

− Started on premises; “customer demand blew away all scale expectations”

− Azure provides virtually unlimited scale on demand as needed

− Shifted focus to delivering the best experience

“The tools with Azure are really brilliant, and they’re getting better every month. It’s clearly a platform that’s being invested in by Microsoft and by many, many others who see its potential. -Julian Thomas, CTO at Pottermore

Global Scale: Powered by Hyper-V

• Technet.microsoft.com−Over 1 million hits per day

• MSDN.microsoft.com−Over 3 million hits per day

• More Properties−Connect.microsoft.com−Social.microsoft.com−Codeplex

Page 13: Microsoft Virtual Academy. Microsoft Virtual Academy.

MicrosoftVirtual Academy

• Microsoft.com−Largest Virtualized Site in the World

• Powered by Hyper-V for over five years−~15,000 requests per second−Over 40 million hits per day−Over 1.2 billion page hits per month−Zero downtime

Global Scale: Powered by Hyper-V

MMS 2011: More VMs, Fewer Servers

• MMS 2010:• 3 racks/41 servers• 328 logical processors (2S/4C)• 5.125 TB Memory• 82 network cables

• MMS 2011:• 2 racks/32 servers• 768 logical processors (2S/12T)• 4 TB Memory

– Dynamic Memory saved >1 TB RAM

– Over $80,000 savings
