Exercise 2Perform Initial Small Business Server Configuration Tasks

ScenarioWhether you perform a full installation or complete an OEM installation as you did in the previous task, you mustconfigure the server computer to enable the features and services designed to power your small business network. After the server installation is complete, Windows SBS 2003 R2 provides a single interface to perform serverconfiguration tasks. This interface is called the To Do List. The To Do List appears at the end of Setup and assists you in completing the configuration of Windows SBS 2003R2. It guides you through all post-installation tasks necessary to get the network up and running, such asconfiguration and management of the server services, peripheral devices, users, and client computers. The To DoList also includes links to extensive help for all of the steps. In this exercise, you will launch the To Do List and perform the first several tasks outlined.

SBS 2003 R2 also supports the use of one or two network interface cards(NICs). When two NICs are used, SBS 2003 R2 acts as the central point for Internet connections to deliver optimal network performance and to help enforce network security.

Note: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is also configured as part of the wizard.SBS 2003 R2 supports a number of alternative methods for accessing e-mail, ranging

from basic SMTP delivery to the use of more sophisticated clients like Microsoft

Outlook Web Access. In addition, mail store size limits in Windows SBS 2003 R2have been increased from 16 GB to 75 GB, so users can work with rich-media mailtypes and document attachments.

files in its own database, so the patches only have to be downloaded from the Internet once. Instead of each employee downloading software from Windows Update or

Microsoft Update manually on each individuals computer, updates are stored onWSUS and then automatically pushed out to each computer.

Note: Most important, WSUS deploys patches and software updates to computers and servers on your network. WSUS creates a daily report indicating successfullydeployed updates with a green check and detailing which updates may haveadditional installation requirements.
