Annual newsletter 2017

Madinatul Ilm Charitable Trust (MICT)

INTRODUCTION: Madinatul Ilm Charitable Trust (MICT) is reaching out to all our supporters once again with

details of our work in the past financial year (July-June) and plans for the future. Though the past year was

challenging in view of difficult economic conditions which adversely hit our fundraising, we nevertheless raised and

disbursed just over ten million Rupees on a variety of causes.

Our work was notably led by educational grants where we disbursed approximately eight million Rupees for

financially distressed students. Other major initiatives involved disbursements for healthcare and a food support

program for impoverished households ahead of the holy month of ‘Ramadan’. The ‘Ramadan’ support program

helped approximately five thousand across the low income ‘Gharibabad’ neighborhood ofRawalpindi to remain

immune from sudden and rapid inflation – a hard fact of life as food prices soar ahead of the fasting month.

Going forward, during the next one year we are offering a sum of five million Rupees in matching grants for our

work in education, healthcare and provision of food to communities in need. For every Rupee given by donors,

MICT will match a Rupee through its own collections. Dubbed as ‘double your charity’, the matching grants

provide an ideal opportunity for donors to enlarge the effect of their contributions.

Separately, MICT has renewed a water project and a crisis intervention initiative. The water project has

begun with tfundraising for five new water wells to be installed around the hilly terrain of the Potohar region

just south of Islamabad. The crisis intervention initiative meanwhile is meant to fund exorbitantly expensive

and sudden needs of individuals in crisis, such as victims of major accidents, cancer patients and/or victims

of unexpected natural calamities.

Listed below are areas and disbursements made by MICT during the last financial year:

How your support has changed lives

Educational grants are the single most important initiative to break the cycle of poverty. MICT’s

educational projects encompass all areas pertaining to education. We have provided support for vocational as well as formal education regardless of age, gender, or location. During the period under review, MICT spent

PKR 7,999,328.00 (US$76,296.00) to support approximately 100 students. Our work in this area will continue in the coming year.

Financing projects for providing safe drinking water to deprived rural communities in areas of

severe water shortages remains one of our key objectives. In the coming year, we have outlined at least five such projects in the rainfed rural areas of northern Punjab. Depending on resources, we plan to expand this activity further.

As part of our activities, MICT’s work seeks to support patients in need. During the period under review,

MICT disbursed PKR. 927,876.00 (US $8,850.00) to patients in need of financial assistance. During the next

financial year, we intend to build up further on this initiative at a time when financially challenged patients have virtually no means of support.

Madinatul Ilm Charitable Trust (MICT) continues to reach out to individuals in need of food during the holy month of ‘Ramzan’ when sudden food inflation hits budgets of the poorest households. Our hope is to place food on empty tables in deprived households so that our fellow human beings can go through ‘Ramadan’ without empty stomachs. The food packs this year were delivered to 500 families comprising at least 4500 individuals. The total cost of these food bags was Rs. 1,002,540.00 (US $9,562).

Future plans.

As we prepare for the year ahead, MICT remains dedicated to continuing its work for crisis stricken communities across Pakistan. Please join us in achieving our objective. Listed below are just some of the examples to illustrate
