CAPTAIN DOUBLE POINTS

The role of the Draft league commissioner can be a tough gig. The most organised of your mates is usually a good place to start, but they may also need to be diplomatic and make some big calls.

Setting up the league (options outlined on the following page) should be discussed by the members. Get a Facebook group or chat set up to discuss what settings suit best.

One of the settings that can affect the commissioner directly is Inter-team Trading. Sometimes there can be collusion between league members if it is free for all. Having the power to approve or block a trade can help keep the integrity of a league so the commissioner approved setting is a must if you can’t trust everyone!

A platform to chat about the league, be it via Facebook or a messaging app, adds to the experience of playing Fantasy Draft. Many leagues enjoy the banter throughout the week and certainly while head-to-head match ups play out on the weekend. Sending a weekly email newsletter can help bond (and sometimes tear apart) all of the coaches.

Once all members have registered for the league, a random draft order

is applied for the upcoming selections on draft day. A lot of competitions have opted to use the Custom Draft Order setting and think of creative ways to determine who gets which pick.

In the last few years, The Bacon Cup, has given the responsibility of selecting the draft order to last year’s premier. An arvo at the local pub watching a horse race where everyone drew a runner out of the hat, a nearest to the pin on a par three golf hole and a plastic duck race down a river have been some of the highlights.

This year Roy has the honour of finding a way to select the draft order. While we don’t know what he’s going to do as yet, it is a great way to get the league excited about draft day and the season ahead. Getting all members together for this extra event can make it a fun experience or a live stream can work to build a buzz, especially for coaches who cannot be in attendance.

Playing in a Fantasy Draft league is fun but when there’s something on the line – whether it is money or pride – the role of the commissioner is an important one!

COMMISSIONER’S NOTEAs league members are all over the country, we opt for the live draft for the Bacon Cup and have 60 seconds per pick. If you have everyone together, consider the commissioner draft where selections are inputted on one computer. You can project this to a big screen for an authentic boardroom draft feel. Snake draft is the most popular order style where the order will reverse for every second round.

COMMISSIONER’S NOTEThere are some new squad structures this season, including more options where only one ruckman per team needs to be selected. Larger squad size formats are recommended for leagues with fewer coaches. Captains on will mean one player in each squad will gain double points for each round. We don’t have captains on in our league and go with the 3-4-1-3/8 structure meaning 228 players are drafted for our 12-coach league. Emergencies mean that if one of your players doesn’t play, the emergency for that position will count towards your weekly score.

COMMISSIONER’S NOTEWe choose to have restricted free agents on so that following a round, the most eager coach doesn’t just pick up the best available players off the scrapheap! Reverse ladder order means that the coach who is struggling the most in the league can get a leg up by acquiring the next best available player in the event of injuries… or the need to dump an under-performer.

COMMISSIONER’S NOTEWith the flexible finals format, we prefer to have approximately half of the league making finals. Our Bacon Cup league has 12 coaches and six make finals. We choose to have bye rounds off so we don’t need to draft thinking about who will be missing over the multi-bye rounds.

HOW WILL YOUR LEAGUE PLAY OUT?

After averaging 103 in 2016, Cogs had a horribly interrupted season due to injury. Despite that, he scored five hundreds in his 10 games with a lowest score of 82. He is a forgotten man and after scoring 121 and 134 in two of his finals appearances, I project a career high average of 108.

STEPHEN CONIGLIO

MID

2017 AVG: 95.7

If your rivals don’t adjust Clarke up their defender rankings, he may be a bargain selection late in the draft. His average of 69 places him well down the list but when you consider the youngsters end to the season across half back, his scores of 81, 101, 85, 78 and 104 in the last five rounds suggests he is in for a big year. Projected average: 84.

RYAN CLARKE

DEF

2017 AVG: 68.7

No one in their right mind is going to use an early pick on Stringer, however his projected upside should see him surpass not only last years disappointing average of 57, but his career high of 76. He has put on significant size and the Bombers have suggested he is earmarked to fill the lofty shoes of Jobe Watson. Projected average: 81.

JAKE STRINGER

FWD

2017 AVG: 57.2

The former Hawk and fifth year Saint won’t be sitting high on any coaches watch list but he may provide you with a more than serviceable defender late in the draft after an impressive finish to 2017 in which he scored three hundreds in his last seven games and averaged 91 in his last eight. Leigh Montagna’s retirement can’t hurt. Projected average: 84.

SHANE SAVAGE

DEF

2017 AVG: 81.4

Having a look at the way a player ends the previous year can be a great way to find a slider and Luke Dunstan is certainly one to watch based on that theory. The fifth year Saint finished the season with a career best average of 88, but it was the last six weeks that were something to behold with 100 or more in each of those weeks after not reaching triple figures prior round 18. Projected average: 100.

LUKE DUNSTAN

DEF

2017 AVG: 87.6

When looking for prospective Draft sleepers, you are looking for players that have slipped off the radar for one reason or another that you think have some realistic upside late in the draft.

The fact Brayshaw has only played 15 games over the past two season is a big turn off for many coaches who seek durability, not to mention his career high average of 77 doesn’t demand attention. If however, the former number three pick can have some luck with injury, he looms as a great pick in the backline after scoring 80 or more in all four of his injury free games last season. Projected average: 85.

ANGUS BRAYSHAW

DEF/MID

2017 AVG: 77.2

As a forward, Sicily is not worth considering, even as a late pick, however, it looks as though he will once again play across half back where he could conceivably be in the mix for a top six defender position. Five of his last six weeks as a defender last year were in the elite bracket with scores of 92, 104, 106, 110 and 124. Projected average: 98.

JAMES SICILY

FWD/DEF

2017 AVG: 74.3

If you want to think about how far Joel will slide this year, consider this… He won’t even be in the top three drafted midfielders from the Cats. Coaches are going to get an absolute bargain for a remarkably late pick in the draft this year for a player that has averaged over 100 in seven of his last nine seasons. Projected average: 106.

JOEL SELWOOD

MID

2017 AVG: 94.9

High draft picks need to be used without risk, but later picks can be used to take a punt and O’Meara is the perfect example of a late pick that could take you all the way. On paper, it doesn’t look good with just six games in three years for an average of 71, but the upside is huge and from all reports he is set to go bang. Projected average: 98.

JAEGER O'MEARA

MID

2017 AVG: 70.7

Coming off an average of 66, Lobb is not going to be high on anybody’s draft ratings, however his position change to number one ruck makes him one to keep an eye on later in the draft. Lobb embraced sole ruck duties in the Giants' last two finals appearances with scores of 90 and 83 from 39 and 31 hit outs respectively, and he will likely receive DPP status in round 6. Projected average: 84.

RORY LOBB

Gibbs was one of 12 players who averaged over 110 last year, but many Fantasy coaches are questioning whether or not he can back it up at his new club. Surrounded by Rory Sloane and the Crouch Brothers, how many points is there to go around and will he slip back to the 105 mark where he has been four times before?

BRYCE GIBBS

MID

2017 AVG: 112.1

The word coming out of Collingwood is that they really want Mason Cox playing more in 2018. Last year when Cox played alongside Grundy, it hampered Grundy’s output as he averaged just 89. Without Cox he was a different player and averaged 109. The “Cox Effect” is very real, so be careful and don’t take Grundy too early.

BRODIE GRUNDY

RUC

2017 AVG: 106.2

Menegola’s scores are dramatically effected by his role. In games when Selwood or Dangerfield didn’t play last year, he was required in the midfield, and as a result from those games he averaged 121. However, when they both played, he averaged 26 points less. With Ablett now in the picture, Menegola might not be the No. 1 forward he was last year.

SAM MENEGOLA

MID

2017 AVG: 102.1

Drop him down the ranking NOW! From his two games last year in round 22 and 23, he kicked 11 goals to average 95. This is not a realistic expectation for Townsend who then scored 29, 56 and 52 in the AFL Finals. He sits at No. 11 in the forward rankings, so leave him for your mates and then you’ll have the last laugh.

JACOB TOWNSEND

FWD

2017 AVG: 95.0

Yes, the messiah returns… but how much can he average with so much talent around him but more importantly, how many games will he play? He holds the third best average from 2017 (14 games), however, the selection of Ablett early in the Draft will either make or break your season.

GARY ABLETT

MID

2017 AVG: 118.9

“I’m picking up Blakely because he’ll get defender status throughout the year”. Be ready for this comment on Draft Day from an optimistic mate and although he might be right, he also might be terribly wrong. Jumping on a ‘hope’ can always backfire and leave you with a player you actually didn’t want in that position.

CONNOR BLAKELY

MID

2017 AVG: 91.8

Boak regains his forward eligibility this year after gaining it in round 12. The time he spent forward in the latter half of the year will only be increased with the arrival of the “Pig” himself, Tom Rockliff. The veteran turns 30 this year and should spend more time forward than ever before.

TRAVIS BOAK

MID

2017 AVG: 91.2

Will Witherden suffer from ‘Second Year Blues’? This is a condition that Fantasy Doctors are very wary of for players who enter their second season after a dominate debut. They tend to struggle to back it up just like his team mate Dayne Zorko did when he went 94 on debut and then just 74 the following year.

ALEX WITHERDEN

DEF

2017 AVG: 88.4

Wells sits inside the top 15 eligible forwards and to be brutally honest, he shouldn’t be there. He has played in only 42% of the games over the last four years and at the age of 33 he’s no Federer, and surely he won’t play many more. Bump him down your rankings with confidence.

DANIEL WELLS

MID

2017 AVG: 77.2

After his best Fantasy season in his 12-year career, surely Higgins slides this year. The man has featured on many ‘Never Again Lists’ over his career and he’ll enter the new season at the age of 30 in a team tipped to have a truckload of losses. He won’t back up his break-out 2017 season, so drop him in your rankings.

SHAUN HIGGINS

MID

BEARHAWKCHRISThe dual position players got me out of many a pickle last season, so I've gone hard on them again this year. Pre-season hype on Whitfield and Sicily may have gotten the better of me, but pretty happy with the midfield makeup overall. I took a punt with Jaeger on the bench, and could yet prove a Clarko-like masterstroke.

TANKING EARLYTIMHaving Gaff as my final on-field mid (and Shuey as bench cover) means my engine room is rock solid. Indeed, it’s Rockliff - solid with the true Fantasy Pig frolicking in the muck at his new sty. Lock him in for a monster year. I'll admit to grabbing Hodge too early, and Petracca and Mills are huge dice rolls. If both don't have breakout years, I might as well have picked Chris Mayne.

GRUNDY & COKEMJPick 1 is great for a 'captain lock' and Mitchell is that man. The wait until pick 20 is always painful but to land Heeney, the number one forward in 2018, on the way back down was a dream as well as Hibberd down back. A midfield then including Parker, Fyfe and Coniglio and things are looking the goods for this squad.

BACK ON TRACJUDDAfter getting a star captain in Dangerfield – my strategy was to ‘ignore the mids’ and focus on other positions first. I even went with no mid emergency as I’d rather see some other players in the JLT first. I looked for high upside picks such as Billings, McLean, Scharenberg and Lobb, of which Lobb is my favourite playing sole ruck for the Giants this year.

McDOWELL'SRICKYThis year I wasn't mucking around in the midfield. I went hard and hard early. Dusty, Sloane and Sidebottom were my first three (110+, 110+ 105+). My backline are all halfback runners who can use the ball, and my forward line is all about Joe. Praying that Deledio ends up loose at half-back and a big welcome back to NicNat.

FANTASY FREAKO CHAMPION DATAFREAKOAt pick 9, I was always going to take the best player available, and when Ablett is staring you in the face, you just pick him! Next priority was nailing the ruck and in Gawn there is none better. Overall, my strategy was to pick a solid midfield, and in Bont, Heppell and Ross I did that. Unearthing a breakout was next, so now it’s up to Burton to deliver.

destROYROYHaving the last pick in a 10 player draft can be a blessing as it provides a great opportunity to structure your side. With my first two picks I wanted a captain option and the best available player from a position other than the midfield. Adams and Laird ticked those boxes and from that point I basically dominated.

CALVINATORCALVINJosh Kelly at pick 7, talk about a steal! My plan was to secure two quality midfielders early and then build my team around that. Although my defenders are potentially my weakest line, I have Brayshaw riding the pine, which gives me the opportunity to play him if he hits the ground running like he did at the end of 2017.

WARNE DAWGSWARNIEI come away from most drafts thinking I took players too early. Case in point, my boy Devon Smith and my ruck was possibly a bit too early, but two rucks I ranked below him went previously so I jumped. I waited to complete my midfield and grabbed a few guys I am likely to stream based on opponent and hopefully have some trade bait.

MOREIRA’S MAGIC SELBYI got a bit excited seeing all the big names available and used my first four picks on midfielders. This left me clutching when it came to the other positions. Goldstein leads a group of young guns who should go another level in 2018. But I’m hanging my (No. 1) hat on Nic Newman getting DPP early in the year and becoming a top-tier backman.

Draft day is finally here and it is ‘go time’. Here are some tips to ensure you come out the other end with a competitive team.

It is important to continue to adjust your pre-draft list right up until the day of your draft to ensure you are fully prepared to make informed and calculated decisions on the run. If you are happy to leave the rankings in order of average, you are doing yourself an injustice given the amount of information available this pre-season to justify changes. A combination of this and your own intuition is the key to nailing the draft and an up to date list takes the pressure off, while also allowing you to think tactically throughout the draft.

It is also wise to consider the depth in the midfield compared to other positions which increases the value of high scoring players in other positions such as Rory Laird in the back line.

What should you be looking for to justify changing the Draft order?

Players returning from injury - Any opportunity you get to watch a player returning from injury is gold. You are not necessarily looking for them to dominate, but if they look on track to return to their best it is a great way to find a draft sleeper.

An example of this is Allen Christensen who looked injury free for the Lions in the AFLX series. This indicates that he could return an 80+ average as he has pumped out in the past.

Articles and interviews - Although the word of some players and coaches can’t be taken as gospel, reading and listening to interviews about players’ opportunities and roles for the upcoming season can be invaluable. An example of this is Essendon’s Andrew McGrath (DEF/MID) who will be given greater opportunity in the midfield this season which will increase his average nicely.

Pre-season form - This can be fraught with danger but if a player’s role and form appear to set them up for an increase in average, they may be worth bumping up the list.

Don’t waste early picks - It sounds obvious, but your first pick is no time to chase a player you like or someone you project to break-out when these players will likely be available with your third or fourth round selections. You need a franchise player that has consistency, ceiling and durability to lead your squad toward the finals.

Once your Draft is done and dusted, the players who weren’t selected can be found in the Trade Centre as Free Agents. This is also known as the wavier wire or as we like to call it, the “scrapheap”.

As the season progresses, some of these players will be golden trades for your side despite not being drafted on the day. If a player has a role change or hits a hot patch of from, grabbing him before your mates could be a winning move. James Sicily averaged 54 in his first five games last year and wouldn’t have been drafted in many leagues. However, a move into defence saw him rejuvenate his season which was quickly noted by Roy, as he grabbed him as a free agent to be a member of destROY. This move alone proved to be a premiership winning move Roy went on to win the prestigious Bacon Cup.

New Dual Position Players (DPP) are announced in rounds six, 12 and 18. This is when everyone in your league frantically races to the free agents to find a player they can use in a position of need.

An undrafted midfielder who is now available as a defender or forward could be a starting player in their new position. Steele Sidebottom’s value sky-rocketed last year in round 18 when he was announced as a forward. Finishing the season with an average of 106, he was a match winning selection for those lucky coaches who had the luxury of moving him forward and freeing up another position in their midfield.

Nailing a Team-To-Team Trade can help you on your way to winning your draft league. Targeting your weaker and vulnerable mates is critical, especially those who have a passionate and invested interest in a club. You will be able to manipulate these footy tragics by trading them players, who they believe are better than they actually are, putting you one step ahead of the game and on your way to Draft success.
