Coming from the north - PortlandTake I-5 south & exit at #263, Brooks Exit. Proceed to top of off ramp & turn left onto Brooklake Rd. Go 0.7 miles to stop light in Brooks. Turn right at stop light onto 99E (Portland Rd). Go 0.7 miles to Quail. Turn left onto Quail. Go 1.1 miles to stop sign (Lakeside Dr). Turn right onto Lakeside Dr. Go 0.4 miles & look for Mid-America / Sebright Hosta Garden signs. Go to end of gravel & paved drive to 2 story house. If gate is closed, punch in code (1 2 3 4) posted on keypad on driver’s side of vehicle & enter. Gate will close automatically.

Coming from the southTake I-5 north and exit at #260 (Chemawa Rd / Keizer exit). At top of ramp, turn right onto Chemawa and go 0.8 miles to stop light. Turn left onto 99E (Portland Rd). Go 0.3 miles to Lakeside. Turn right onto Lakeside Dr and go 1.5 miles. You will encounter 3 right angle turns and at the fourth right angle turn, instead of turning right, turn left onto gravel drive. You will see Mid-Amer-ica /Sebright Gar-den signs. Proceed through gate to two story house. Parking S W of green pack-ing building.

You are welcome to visit at othertimes, but please call ahead to let us know. We are here most of the time, but we want to be sure we are here for your visit. The best time to reach us by phone is later in the evening - Pacific time. If we’re not available, please leave a message. E-mail also works very well this busy time of year. There is a lot of ground to cover (slopes included free). It is good to wear comfortable, mud resistant shoes. An umbrella is always a good idea. Because of insurance restrictions, no animals or unattended children please.

In addition to being a lovely garden iris, it should be quite helpful in advancing form and overall quality of rebloomers. GARDEN CHIT CHATIt is hard to believe another year has come and gone. Seems like yes-terday we were sitting here writing the Chit Chat for last years catalog. Once again we are so appreciative of all of you, our loyal customers, for your continuing support of our hybridizing efforts.

Our catalogue this year has a bit larger varietal listing. In an effort to keep things under control and with limited space many varieties will be discontinued after this season. So if you see something that you like especially varieties that are getting older remember that it may not be offered next year. We are toying with the idea of an end of the season clearance of some varieties but will depend on stock available at the end of August. If we do, the announcement will be made on the Mid-America Garden facebook page at the end of August or early September. If you haven’t checked out our facebook page, it is filled with lots of Iris photos and previews of new seedlings. We also try to keep you up to date on the latest happenings here at the garden.

2013 was a good year in the award system for Mid-America. Paul did very well again. His varieties received the following awards: Knowlton Medal (BB) for Bundle of Love, Cook-Douglas Medal (SDB) for Wish Upon a Star, Lankow Medal (regional favorite SDB) for Open Your Eyes. Awards of Merit for Wizard of Odds, Stolen Sweets, Star in the Night, Riveting, Raspberry Tiger, Eye of Sauron, and Meow. Honorable Men-tions for Blue Trill, One of a Kind, Action Packed, I Must Have It, Magi-cal Moment, Pretty as a Picture, Mambo Italiano, Always Lovely, Parting Glances, Fanciful Whimsy, All is Bright, Dedicated, Outspoken, Jennyany-dots, and Flecks and Specks. Blue Trill also finished 4th in the interna-tional Iris competition in Florence, Italy.

Thomas’s awards included: A Wister Medal (TB) for Ink Patterns and The William Mohr Medal (AB) for Egyptian Queen. He also had two of the runners up to the Wister. Other awards included Awards of Merit for Dancing Star, Sordid Lives, Grapetizer, and Keeno. Honorable Men-tions included Hollywood Lights, Center Line, Catwalk Queen, Toronto, Painter’s Touch, Howler, Dance Til Dawn, Stir it Up, Pulsator, Capiche, Snitch, Sri Lanka, and Parable. We were also thrilled to see that 16 times Mid-America Garden introductions took top honors at iris shows across the country winning best specimen - 9 Times for Thomas, including a double win for Ink Patterns, and 7 Times for Paul with a double win for Man’s Best Friend. Thank you to all who took the time to enter the shows. American Iris Society shows are an important activity for recruitment of new members.

Mid-America Garden will be one of six Iris gardens on tour for the Amer-ican Iris Society annual convention from May 18 to 23, 2015. It will be headquartered in Portland, Oregon. This last summer we planted over 850 guest Iris from around the country in our display beds. The Tall Bearded Iris Society will receive a preview tour this year when Salem hosts TBIS for their annual meeting in May. Beginning this year, Mid-America Garden will begin introducing for one of Italy’s promising new hybridizers, Lorena Montanari. Her placings at the International Iris Competition in Florence affirm her abilities as a new hybridizer. We are proud to be able to bring her latest creations to you. Following are a few words of introduction from Lorena.

I live on the Rimini hills, a famous Italian seaside town on the Adriatic Sea, situated about 100 miles south of Venice. I’ve been growing irises for over fifteen years. I started hybridizing in 2003. When I started to hybridize, I also attended various programs organized by the Italian Iris Society to train new judges. I wanted to go through the judges’ training process because hybridizer’s activities are so closely related to those of the judge. Both roles require awareness of many factors in looking at an iris, not just beauty of the flower, but consideration of the numerous ele-ments that make up the plant as a whole, such as increase, bud count etc.

As I said, in 2003 I made my first crosses among the varieties I had col-lected at the time. Some of them are quite old. I didn’t have specific goals at the start but I was driven by passion and determination. Along with
