Reach Update Reach has been busy!  At the Center of Hope, our Program Manager Wendy and Office Coordinator Kizzy have been running a tight ship! All the way from Brazil, Katia has volunteered her services and organization expertise to make all of our intake, volunteer tracking, and data driven procedures more efficient and reliable!

And a bright young artistic talent has emerged in the face of DeShawn, age 4, who has been hard at work on his photography exhibition, the Faces of Elmo.

What comes next? We have assembled an excellent search committee

for our new Executive Director. Their work is already underway. We will reconvene with REACH gatherings in September, as we do each year. We will need your input as we move forward! We will continue to serve our community in sharing our gifts through service, giving compassion and dignity through our meal program and the work of our day and night shelters. Which brings us to our next point...

We are hiring! In addition to our search for an Executive Director, we are expanding our team to include a Development Specialist to support our growing community. You can find out more by visiting our careers page on the REACH site, or click the buttons below to download a job description.   We are seeking an exceptionally passionate leader in our Executive Director to lead our programs and teams into our vision for develop and operate a strong and diversified fundraising program.  Find Out More

“At the end of the day, it’s not about what you

have or even what you have accomplished.

It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made

better. It’s about what you have given.”

Here we are in August—my how time flies! The heat spell and poor air have finally departed and I, for one, am heartily grateful. Here, in our spot at the top of the hill, things continue to move and change. There are endings and new beginnings. The Interim Pastor Search Committee has found the candidate for whom we have been waiting. We hope to have him on board in September. YAY! Our beloved friend, choir member, and Treasurer, Linda Hendry, is preparing to cross from this realm to the next. I miss her already but am comforted by the knowledge that she will be in pain no more, and will be waiting when it is our turn to join her. Summer is winding down. School will be starting soon. Our search for an interim pastor appears to be ending and the work of getting ready for a settled pastor is about to begin. I look forward to this next chapter. Peace, Caroline

A Letter to the Congregation August 12, 2017

To my Church Family,

I want to thank the Church for all the prayers and all the good times, especially the singing.

I might not see you again, but when the roll is called up Yonder, I’ll be there! Linda Hendry.

[Let us not forget Linda’s daughter, Erica, who had been Linda’s main caregiver.]

Among the Congregation Patty Wilkowski is back and mostly recovered from a bout with ulcers. She asks prayers for a new Marshallese church which has just started up with around 50 members. Patty lives with one of the families. Nancy Osborn says she enjoyed attending some of the Shakepeare plays in Ashland, Oregon this summer.

Collecting Items for Others From Pat Auten, Outreach Chair

School Supplies are a powerful thing Continuing For August The power found in a backpack full of school supplies cannot be underestimated. These items we collect for donated backpacks help students to return to class each fall with confidence. Thank you for your donations to date. We will continue to collect supplies through the end of August. The school supply sales are still in full swing.

The items our church has been assigned to collect are: alarm clocks, mechanical pencils and lead refills, binder dividers, composition notebooks, pencil boxes, pencil pouches for 3-ring binders colored pencils 2-inch 3-ring binders,

Other items have been assigned to other groups collecting school supplies. Shopping lists are on the window sill in the narthex.

Thinking Ahead to September and October I know that the weather is still quite warm but we need to start thinking about keeping those heads and hands warm at the bus stop. Also, there are many families that will be sleeping outside.

We will be collecting hats, scarves, mittens and gloves for any size family member. I am sure there will be some great sales as the weather cools, and if you knit or crochet we welcome handmade items.

Keep Bringing Breakfast Cereal We will continue to collect breakfast cereal. Please, no Grape-Nuts or granola- style cereal though. Many of the men have few teeth, and sore mouths are a common complaint.

Attaching the Final Parts of the Hoop

Basketball Hoop Finished The church has wanted a

basketball hoop not only for our own congregation to enjoy, but also to make it available to the neighborhood. It took longer than planned. Those in on the final effort below (though others also helped) were: Diane, Cameron, Brian and Carl.

And here is the hoop in use during the church hotdog and hamburger barbecue on July 30th.

Vacation Photo Received Regina Morton, a former member now living in Memphis, TN, responded to our call for vacation photos. She wrote that these three women have been friends since first grade. Linda, center, just celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary. Betsy is on the left and Regina (looking good) is on the right. [I don’t know any friends from first grade, let alone get together with them! That is so Great! —Editor.]

Safety First!! Brian Tzeng put on Tim McL’s bike helmet while working on the basket ball hoop installation. [It was a lot of work putting up the hoop, but the crew apparently had fun doing it. We thank everyone who helped.]

Odds ’n’ Ends Around the Church Reports from the August 1 Council meeting: Financial Secretary Linda Becker says church finances are in a good position. Offerings are in good shape. The New Sign Committee is getting organized and has been researching possibilities. Vacations have slowed progress. New kitchen appliances were discussed and hopes are to keep the cost for both a new refrigerator and stove under $3000, installed. Cameron reported that the annual meeting with the Montessori School turned up no current concerns. Linda B. reported the church’s insurance company and Balfor (the flood cleanup company) and a different carpet store are in negotiations. The church had to go to a different store when the first store and our insurance company couldn’t agree. The new pattern is very similar to the old carpet. We may need to do some touch-up painting to the sanctuary hallway after the baseboard repairs are done. Cameron said he recently walked our wooded area and found no issues. The campers have moved on as well as the person living under the stairs of the Education Building. Outside water faucets are not accessible without the church’s special tool. Cameron also went to check on some homeless campers living near the city water tower to see that they had water to drink since it has been so hot and dry. The church parking lot was striped recently. The clean white lines definitely improve its appearance.

From our Music Minister, Chris Copley

Summer is drawing to a close, bringing blessings such as cooler days, and the chancel choir singing in worship again. Our first choir practice will be Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7pm, in the sanctuary. Anyone may join us. We welcome new members. All it takes is a joy in singing and a willingness to learn a bit about how to improve one's voice. Our first anthem during worship will be on Sunday, Sept. 10. The choir will sing a variety of songs including for the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation on Oct. 29; All Saints Day on Nov. 5; and Thanksgiving Sunday, Nov. 26. Advent begins on Sunday, Dec. 3. This summer has been unique for me: I have prepared the bulletin for worship each week, working with ministers, musicians, proofreaders and those who print copies. Using scriptures and themes suggested by guest speakers, I have picked music and written or adapted prayers, calls to worship, confessions and other spoken passages that are part of worship. This has been a lot of work, and also a joy. [And is much appreciated!] I've also taken a new job as office assistant at Bellwether Housing, a nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Seattle. For the first time since I moved to Seattle three years ago, I have a full-time job with full benefits. Chris

Our Congratulations to Helen Bidman

On July 4, 2017 at the Seattle Federal Building, Helen raised her hand and became a citizen of the United States of America. She is shown here in front of the large U.S. flag there.

New Benches are Comfortable Below is Ernie Pierce and Carolyn Hoisington trying out the new benches. Ernie, up from Arizona for the summer, spent over a week in the hospital shortly after arriving here. He will be returning in a few weeks.

Thank You A note of appreciation has been received from Communities In Schools for the school supplies we donated thus far. The note with a picture of our donations is on the bulletin board in the narthex. *************
