The changes keep happening here in the Detachment, so Mid-Winter is no different.

Mid-Winter Conference is all about learning more about the Legion, Auxiliary, and SAL programs. The Legion brings in experts from the Legion Headquarters as well as from around the state to help educate the Legion Family on the programs and activities concerning the

    Legion Family.

There will also be a FREE Childrens Activities Room all Day on Saturday. Expert care givers are brought in to entertain and teach your kids all day while you are with your Squadron members learning more about this great organization. See the article on page 4 in this newsletter for more information or sign up your kids using the application on the back of the newsletter.

  • Hello all Sons members. How many have gotten a renewal notice from National? If you paid your dues at your Squadron why are you getting a notice? All you out there can go to www.bobboomer.com and see if your Squadron has membership turned in. If not then I would be asking questions. December 5, 2014 membership report shows First District Goose egg free why is this the only one? The reason I pose these Questions is in response to

some things I hear from calling to see if your Squadrons will mail in membership. I will tell everyone not to hold membership, get it in to headquarters. Do any of our members know that National has percentage goals to meet every month. You can go online to SAL National website and see when these dates are. I encourage you as SONS of the AMERICAN LEGION to do this. A lot of Squadrons out there have no membership again I ask why? Look at all the things you are able to get with paid

membership discounts at Sears, Lens Crafters and there are more. So why havent you got your dues paid. You should be HONORING your VETERAN by paying and renewing. Your dues pay for things like the Childrens Activity Room at Mid-winter and a lot more. For GOD and COUNTRY, Mike Blanchard Membership Chairman

goes for guests going to both conferences.

Everyone will be asked to sign in during registration according to your Squadron and your office. Registration is a way for the Detachment to know who was at our Conference and to help us know what areas we need to get information too.

When you come to Mid-Winter Conference this year, you will need to go register at Legion/SAL registration desk in the Ballroom Foyer. Registration fee is $10.00 for members and guests over the age of 18; for those younger than 18 there will be no charge. Duel members will only have to pay the registration fee once and that

Registration is also where you will be able to pick up your membership buttons and ribbons. These buttons are given out based on your Squadrons membership totals at Mid-Winter Conference. If your Squadron reached the National Membership goal of

We are really going to have to shift membership into high gear or we are going to come up short again this years and that is not acceptable to me under my watch. At this point if they havent paid up

yet its time to grab those membership cards and hit the road. Drive to their house and pay them a visit. Have them meet you for a cup of coffee. Whatever it takes it to get that member paid up and all these goose egg Squadrons off the list. Last I counted there were still 43 goose egg Squadrons left. The first district to be goose egg free is

I was able to make the final day of the tour at Lacona on Friday evening and then onto Van Meter on Saturday for Membership turn in. • The VA&R provides direct assistance to veterans and their families in a variety of ways.

One of the ways is the VA&R staff maintains an active voice in Congressional deliberations regarding veterans issues. So we need everyones help, We Need Volunteers. We need more hours on our Consolidated Reports. This is what Commander Mike Helms will take to Congress to get the Benefits our

Veterans Deserve. Not all volunteer hours have to be at the VA Hospitals or the Marshalltown Home, you can volunteer in your community. So Go Out and Volunteer get those hours on your Consolidated Report and get it turned in.

If everyone in the SAL of Iowa would go out and Volunteer just 1 hour each that would be 3851 Hours. This is from the Membership numbers from last year. So

go out and Volunteer and Please get your Consolidated Report turned in.

Also our VA Hospitals need local Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Representatives and Deputy Representatives. You need to be registered as a Regularly Scheduled Volunteer. You will attend quarterly VAVS Committee meetings at the VA Medical Center, review

100% goal and for those that reach 105% and beyond.

So bring one and all to Mid-Winter Conference and collect your Membership Goal Pins and Ribbons for you Squadrons hard work on membership.

75% then you shall receive a blue color ribbon. If your Squadron is reach 100% goal by Mid-Winter Conference you shall receive a purple color ribbon. Then you bring these pins to Detachment Convention and ribbons will be added for those reaching

Then there are others who left off phone numbers, duplicate phone numbers from one officer to another, left off complete addresses or gave me an officers address for the location of the Post/Squadron home. See my problem, how can we the Detachment contact you, come visit you or even send you information

or awards if we dont have the correct information.

So the Detachment voted to require all the correct information on the Squadron Officers Reports each year or you wont receive your membership for the coming year. So in an effort to help you fix those reports or get us the correct information I am

  • Lots of things enter into the realm of PR. There is a letter in this newsletter, from the National PR Committee, about the Snaps Shots of Service we, here in Iowa are asking much the same thing. Weve, for a number of years had trouble coming up with someone to take on the Historian Office. That being said, it now becomes everyones job, Commander Mikes Mother has volunteered to do his history book, so now up to us to help

    her complete this undertaking.

To make it very easy, on the home page of the Commanders Website bobboomer.com there is a button about the history book, click on it and it will set you up with an email that you can attach pictures with captions about what your Squadron is up to. Its then sent to Mikes Mom and the Webmaster, you can also just send it to [email protected]

m That puts your good work in the History book, it also will more than likely, make it onto the new Detachment Facebook page, something else for you to take a look at. On Facebook we are listed as Iowa Sons of the American Legion. We, as a Detachment, need to put our best foot forward, and show our pride for whoever made the sacrifice that gives us our eligibility to be members of the Sons of the American Legion.

  • Greetings and I hope that everyone had a Wonderful Thanksgiving, spent with Family and Friends.

I have been asked to write an article regarding the need for a Detachment of Iowa Cam-paign Fund for potential Na-tional Officers.

Ever since I have belonged to this Detachment, I have found that Iowa always does their very best to do a First Class Job in promoting their mem-

bers for such offices. I was very fortunate to be National Commander in 2004-2005. I was only able to achieve this with the strong support of this Detachment, both through encouragement and financially.

Running for a National Office is a great undertaking that requires the person to put strains on their family and their Job. In the midst of this, that person should not need to worry about where

the money for his campaign trips will be coming from. We all know that we will never get back what we spend in our travels for our organi-zation, but it would be nice to know that the entire Detach-ment is behind our goal to advance and succeed in The Sons of The American Le-gion.

With this in mind I believe that our Detachment needs to

    (Continued on page 9)

    NATIONAL CANDIDATE FUND

SERVICE TO GOD AND COUNTRY 2) Awarding and recognizing the work of our Chaplains.

    3) To publicize what our Chaplaincy does and how it can affect the very nature of what The American Legion Family stands for, using all resources at our disposal.

However its not just the duty of our Chaplain to bring God back into the lives of our community, it takes everyone joining together. We, as American Legion Family Members, must get behind these groups and help them succeed. Get involved with our youth, community service work programs and Memorial Services that include your community. You can even take it one step further and have your American Legion Post host a Church opened for everyone.

    This time of year most

everyone thinks of helping those less fortunate than ourselves. We do Thanksgiving baskets for the needy, Christmas parties for the children, stocking stuffing programs, going to the VA and passing out socks to our Veterans. Its not a one time of year thing, we need to bring the presents and presence of God year round.

As a resource we can take a page from another Americanism Program, the Boy Scouts of America. BSA has a program called Duty to God, within this program every boy and adult can earn the religious emblem for their own faith. You can go to any Scout office, or go online @ http//www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/512-879_WB.pdf to learn more about this program.

    (Continued on page 7)

Every American Legion Post, Unit, and Squadron that has a Chaplain, ask yourself this: Were they given the position because there was nobody else? Are they able to give spiritual help? Are they there just to give a prayer before and after our meetings? Religious emphasis has taken a back seat in America for some time now, we The American Legion Family, need to help bring it back.

The 2014 Chaplains' Conference of The American Legion came up with an action item, Operation Back to God. Three working groups were organized for the purpose of placing this initiative before all members of The American Legion Family.

    1) Developing a training curriculum for our future Chaplains.

  • In order to bring an emphasis to the efforts that our membership does for our veterans and our communities the National Public Relations Commission is creating Snapshots of Service, a photo contest. This contest is open to all Squadrons. This contest should also help spread ideas as to what will or could work in your region of the country. Another benefit of these photos will be to use them on our website and

Facebook page to highlight our accomplishments. Submissions are due 30 days prior to the 2015 National Convention. Awards will be given presented at the 2015 National Convention. Below are the rules and criteria:

Photos must be based on the Four Pillars of the American Legion: Americanism, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Children and Youth &National Security.

Photos must be in a digital jpg or tiff format.

Photos to become the property of the Sons of The American Legion.

Photos must not have a right of restriction

Photos must contain members of the Sons with their covers or identifiable clothing on during the activity or event and a brief history of

    reaching membership goals.

DEC approved supporting the Childrens Activity Center and placing a wreath at a National Memorial during the Washington Conference.

The DEC voted to donate $500.00 to each VA Hospital and Home for Christmas Gift card for the canteens. Since the meeting the DEC has learned that the VA Hospital

The Fall Conference was held in Washington Iowa on October 26; here are some highlights of the meetings.

NEC Richard Young asked for volunteers to serve on National Committees and let the Detachment by the Mid-Winter meeting.

The DEC voted to do buttons and ribbons instead of target coins to award Squadrons for

in Omaha NE doesnt use the Christmas Gift Cards and thus decided to give them the donation for use in their recreational account to entertain the Veterans.

Then the group in attendance was given training on mySAL.org, forms on the computer and how to submit them to the Detachment.

DETACHMENT LEADERSHIP SEMINAR Michael Deacon and Detachment Adjutant will be conducting the seminar. This seminar is open to everyone and we mean everyone in your squadron.

We will be covering how the organization is organized down to a sample of how squadrons are organized all over the country. We will also go over what each

officers responsibilities are as well as ways Squadron members can get more involved in the Squadron activities.

We also have the membership secretary come in and refresh us and teach the new members on membership processing.

We are also excited this year (Continued on page 7)

With winter upon us, and we move into doing more things indoors, its time to get a refresher course in community leadership.

The Detachment of Iowa Leadership Seminar will be held Saturday Feb. 14, 2015 in the Boardroom at the Airport Holiday Inn at 1:00 PM.

America was founded upon the idea that The Great Creator of Man had endowed each and every human being with certain unalienable rights"'; among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Our brave men and women, of the armed forces, have served around the world protecting these God-given rights. Taking time from our busy lives we

can bring God back into our lives and into our community. We just have to open our eyes and see what is already there.

The American Legion isnt alone in bringing God back into the community. Civic organizations like the Masonic Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus, are groups based on, or take part under the guidelines of churches. Nearly every church has Bible study, Sunday School and other activities where our children are shown how and why we need to have God in our lives.
