MIDAIR MARVEL[Chinese missile meeting at 32,000 feet over Xinjiang] July 31, 2017 draft 2James [email protected]
01L(HEIJST)
What happened…..
China tests a Hit• -to-Kill missile in Xinjiang, western China
Proper• warning notices filed
Dutch air• cargo flight delayed by weather comes along….
• … with a EXPERT photographer in the cockpit == KUDOS to Christiaan
He• takes images of the missile coming nearly head-on
This• viewing angle obscured the separate sequential features of the missile flight path
Chinese websites post other photos from both head• -on and from the side at various angles. and two videos as well
Reports• and images from earlier flights are located
What’s most interesting• Apparently multiple restarts of upper stage engine in nearly random
orientations
• Flight scheduled for twilight [dark sky from ground but rocket and plumes still in sunlight] suggests deliberate desire for visibility
• Coordination with target launch from other site still undetermined
• ..unless this WAS the target, and interceptor attacked later at lower altitude – identities of players in this dance still ambiguous
• Some images of current event and previous ones show highly convoluted smoke trails suggesting additional endo-atmospheric pluming – relation to main missile activity not apparent
• Awesome collection of visual recordings provide insights & puzzles
• International Space Station NOT over area of test, so no images
• Degree of PRC citizen participation in posting images – impressive!
How we will explore this
• Context and precursor events of similar type
• Unearthly behavior of space plumes and fuel dumps continue to amaze
• Van Heijst airborne observations
• Ground observations of same event• In-line like van Heijst• Profile views
• Ground observations of previous near-identical events
• Open questions – smoke rings, and who was target, who the killer?
• Further analysis needed [further HELP needed!!]
Imagery referencing methodology
• About two dozen different sources of imagery have been found so far
• Matching each image to its original source is important
• This allows compare/contrast references between images from different sources.
• Many of the sources are described in Chinese, for which ‘google translate’ provides less-than-useful English interpretations – help is needed here
• For the purposes of this report and for comments offered in the future, I will assignarbitrary numbers to the imagery sources [eg, #12] with sequential latin letters for thesequence of images from each source [eg, #07B]
• I hope and expect that additional imagery sources will come to my attention in the future and they will be assigned identifiers as they appear
• Where useful I will add a parenthetical descriptor to the code to aid in recalling source

From the side, four distinct propulsive events occurred in quick succession == [1] Initial launch leaving narrow plume in atmosphere, broadening after crossing ‘Karman Line’ about 100 km up, turning horizontal, then dissipating; [2] brief horizontal thrusting with blue trail typical of solid fuel missiles; [3] brief coast, then 15-second thrusting downwards, ejecting plume upwards where it expanded and dissipated; [4] NOT YET OCCURRED IN THESE VIEWS – a 10-15 second horizontal turning plume, which then expanded and dissipated
TWO SIDE VIEWS OF SEQUENCE[THE PILOT AND MOST OTHER GROUND OBSERVERS SAW IT NEARLY STRAIGHT ON FROM DEAD AHEAD SO ALL PLUMES LAID OVER EACH OTHER]
PLUMES ARE SUNLIT AT HIGH ALTITUDE

This radiation is determined by the excitation of transitions B2 Σ → 2 Σ AlO
molecules in the wavelength range 4374 A - 5424 A. Long-term "afterglow» of
aluminum oxide [AlO], ie glow for ~ an hour after the passage of the rocket, is
determined by the relatively small diffusion coefficient sufficiently heavy molecules.

JULY 25, 2017 – THE STORY OPENS WITH A FACEBOOK POSThttps://www.facebook.com/christiaan.vanheijst/posts/10155557558977090
Christiaan van Heijst added 11 new photos — in Yesterday [7/24/2017] at 10:20am ·
• Here we go again.. Last night, flying from Hong Kong to Baku over the Himalaya mountains, we witnessed something that was truly a once in a lifetime event.
• What started unexpectedly with an unusual bright spot on the horizon quickly changed into a droplet-shaped bubble that rapidly grew in size and altitude.
• Just a few minutes later, the rocket's exhaust gasses started forming a brightly curved trail that was accompanied by various illuminated spots in the dark sky that varied in color and shape, probably depending on the angle by which they were illuminated by the sun.
• This visual spectacle came as a total surprise for us and the only thing we found in the NOTAMS for our route was a 'temporarily restricted airspace' with a 100km radius somewhere south of Urumqi in north-west China with no mention of the nature of the closure, let alone a possible rocket/missile launch. Also, a quick search on google gave me no results about any publicly announced launches for this weekend.

EDIT: apparently it was a Chinese anti-ballistic missile test; (French)

• Background – missile
• http://www.eastpendulum.com/la-chine-revele-ses-essais-antimissiles
The suspected missile is a HQ-19, which is the Chinese equivalent to the THAAD-ER missile and a component of their in-development multi-layered missile defense network. Intercept velocity was roughly at 3 km/s (again comparable to the THAAD) based on NOTAM data.
NOTE: “Space clouds” are not earthly “clouds”
Russian scientists [• eg Yuliy Platov] suggest neologism ‘cosmosol’ to acknowledge uniqueness of the object [analogous to ‘aerosol’]
They are free• -flying unconstrained particulates
They have no mutual attractive or associative forces•
Two flows can interweave and affect particle motion by collision•
Altitude and brightness can vary enormously•
They are not opaque like water clouds but portions can be bright •enough to mask out light from dimmer stars behind them
Because of structural features of the originating rocket stage, plumes •can possess and retain silhouettes reflecting localized blockage of the initial expulsion
Rocket plumes aren’t like jet plumes or flamethrower plumes or smoke plumes
For the first 50-60 kilometers of ascent, smoke trail is narrow, hemmed in, particles are stopped and then buoyed by air
This ‘floating’ non-vertical-moving portion is quickly zig-zagged by strong high-altitude crosswinds
When rocket enters region of purer vacuum above the von Karman ’line’ [~ 100 km], particle motions are unimpeded, so the plume widens to fan shape
Both engine exhaust [wide fan] and hydraulic pressure generator [to steer engines] exhaust [narrow trail] can leave visually distinguishable plumes
Earlier [lower] portions of plume may not be fully sunlit for some ‘twilight flights’ [time-of-day dependent] and exhibit rosy coloration
Plumes/clouds are THIN and therefore translucent and can be ‘seen through’ to other clouds behind them
Because they are ‘ghostly’ it is not immediately obvious which way they are facing – coming or going
In space, plumes are even weirder than THAT!!• Unlike atmospheric plumes suspended by buoyancy, plumes in space are clouds
of effluent particles following ballistic trajectories so they behave in a literally unearthly manner
• For engine exhaust, velocity is typically ~ 3 km/sec so early in ascent the particles are quickly flung back down into the atmosphere; for fuel dumps, much slower
• But as vehicle climbs and accelerates, with speed in the range 3-4 km/sec, the particles ejected from an already-fast-moving vehicle still retain significant forward speed with significant upwards angle -- they are ‘lofted’ en masse through space, seem to ‘follow’ the missile, gradually falling behind, and only slowly disperse and fall
• This odd effect is enhanced as upper stages pitch over closer to horizontal – and a special category of recent Russian ICBM tests and Chinese hit-to-kill warhead tests actually burn the last stage angled slightly downwards, thus giving plume particles a substantially greater UPWARDS initial component and extending their lifetime before air impact
• As upper stage [or warhead bus] accelerates it pulls ahead of plume more quickly, narrowing the forward plume and introducing a noticeable taper

DUTCH PRESS REPORTS• Toevallig legt Nederlandse piloot mysterieuze raketlancering vast

DUTCH PRESS REPORTS
• Of we ons zorgen moeten maken?
Maar ik besefte meteen: what comes up, must come down.

[my first guess on poor imagery, was wrong]
• WONDERFUL images, well done!! Since both 'teardrop' clouds seemed co-aligned, my first guess is they are two separate rockets, perhaps launched towards each other from some distance apart. The thin trail swells as the rocket crosses the ‘Karman Line’ about 100 km high where aerodynamic effects vanish [since there are TWO swelling clouds, this tells me they are two different rockets, not different stages of the same single rocket].
Compare the plume shapes to this well-imaged event : http://satobs.org/seesat_ref/misc/Soyuz_launch_4.pdf
• Similar descriptions connected to rocket events have been coming out of China for decades note the frequent witness descriptions of the clouds as looking like garden vegetables!!] : http://www.jamesoberg.com/china-em-ufo-1982-draft-2.pdf

• This shows multiple photos taken by Chinese from the ground and a slightly different angle. I think it clearly shows a 2-stage rocket and ignition instead of two different missiles.

I interpret this sequence as a warhead bus tossed up by the first stage •[which made that massive ‘plume 1’, followed shortly by the smaller blue ‘plume 2’, then firing while already canted slightly downwards, creating that fan-shaped ‘plume-3’. It then shuts down and the plume continues departing at maybe 10,000 f/s, higher and wider. After an interval the same bus, which has rotated maybe 45 degrees and now faces forward and slightly up, fires again, creating the ‘plume-4’ you see forming. Note that bus firing #3's plume continues rising and dissipating even as firing #4's plume is being formed. You see this more clearly in the profile video sequence. The blue line [plume-2] I'm still pondering.

Burn3 lasts 16 sec, pause 7 sec Burn4 lasts >9 sec

”Burn 2” plume
barely moves over interval
of video. Assuming engine Isp
of 280, exhaust velocity would be
~ 2800 m/sec, so lack of displacement
suggests missile velocity was about
the same value [reasonable enough].Corrected for
verticality
IMAGE CONTAINSINDICATORS OFAZIMUTH, VELOCITY & RANGE
Only non-moving point source on celestial sphere [more visible in other images when brightened], this is very probably Jupiter, in the SW sky – so observer is NE of launch site, near Urumchi, the only major city nearby.
Structure providesguide to plumb line
Persistent ascent plume usually terminates near the ‘Karman Line’ altitude of ~100 km, which bounds the range of distances.

• China’s military in 2016: Missiles, intelligence and the SCS By Bill Gertz December 28, 2016
As the year ended, China conducted a flight test of a new missile known as the Dong Ning-3 that the Pentagon believes is a missile designed to hit US satellites in space in a crippling attack in the early phases of a conflict that would limit American military forces from navigating forces, pinpointing targets and gathering intelligence. The DN-3 test took place in early December…..

The pilot's images are hard to interpret because he's viewing the •ascent and deploy sequence head-on, with several distinct rocket phases lined up in front of each other. Fortunately a video from Urumqi shows the sequence in profile. It looks like the warhead at the end was actually thrusting downwards [plume pointed up] perhaps to simulate full-range ICBM speed for a test of some sort. Russia ran a series of tests exactly like this out of their Volga River missile base into Kazakhstan, the upside down plumes freaked out witnesses for a thousand miles in all directions.
CONCLUSIONS
• Modern availability of video recorders and instant dissemination has revolutionized the analysis of unusual apparitions.
• Multiple viewing angles can be critical to properly reconstructing the stimulus event[s] as reported by observers
• Understanding the location and time of events is critical to assessing degree of overhead sunlight for illumination of missile/space activities including plume and cloud creation
• Imagery analysis using overbrightening can be helpful in detecting subtle tenuous cloud structures in the night sky
• Imagery analysis can often extract orientation/azimuth information, such as celestial sphere objects [eg, moon and bright planets]
• AD HOC investigation teams of former strangers spring up rapidly and operate effectively
• It’s more fun than EVER.
OPEN ISSUES
• Search for other serendipitous observations – ISS, shuttle [pre 2011], WXSATs, ‘UFO’ archives, etc
• Explanation of apparent four-burn sequence strategy• Relationship of blue ‘burn-2’ with higher-appearing burn-1 plume just
doesn’t look right – might be clue to major misinterpretation• Are any indications of a target vehicle present? Or IS this the target?• Were any other precursor launches also at twilight, and if so, why?• WTF are the curlicue clouds?• Is it possible the first launch is a target vehicle and the curlicue cloud
[clearly below 100 km altitude] is the interceptor maneuvering for the kill?• Known unknowns – several• Unkown unknowns – probably even more
Wingo suggestionThe more I read about this the more that it looks like a Chinese Version of the Minuteman • 1 second stage sounding rocket experiments we did at White Sands Missile range when I was at Space Vector Corporation.
