WELCOME VIKINGS!!

New beginnings, school-year resolutions, and celebrations!

Greetings Viking Students, Parents and Community! I am honored and privileged to be serving as your principal of Cerro Villa this year and to be part of this amazing community. On September 7th, we hosted our annual Back to School Night and it was great to see so many of you there.

The beginning of the year is such an exciting time of new starts, goals, and resolutions. Maintaining and achieving goals and resolutions has much to do with accountability and utilizing resources. At our Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies (PBIS) First Day Assembly, on August 23th, I discussed with our students how Cerro Villa is a school setting that

is both academically and behaviorally focused. We follow our school motto: Choose Respect,

Value Yourself and Others, Make it Safe, and Strive for Success...CVMS. These values and

expectations for our students are to be reflective and cognizant in continuing successful habits and working on areas of needed improvement. I believe in placing the same expectations on myself and shared with students how I will strive to model this throughout the school year.

Parents, as we begin this new school-year, I ask that some family time is spent to establish some short and long-term goals coupled with new resolutions for your students that match our 2017-2018 school focus of improving literacy, infusing technology into the classrooms and increasing achievement in all of our core disciplines. The following questions may be useful:

Is there an established homework time and is homework a priority?

Is the Viking Planner being used daily?

Is there an established homework location that is quiet with adequate space and light?

Is time set aside to share and discuss homework, activities, and situations that happen at school?

Is “reading for pleasure” modeled?

Thank you for working together with us. Building a strong foundation in the middle grades is a critical step for future success in high school and beyond.

THANK YOU TO OUR PFSO!

I am very appreciative and thankful to all of our PFSO members who helped us throughout July and August in opening the school. Members assisted by working various stations at

registration, distributing schedules on the first day of school, handing out textbooks, and even working at the fireworks stand at Villa Park High School! A special thank you to Mrs. Rios for organizing and assisting with all of our pre-registration and registration events and to Mrs. Wong for organizing the fireworks stand. These jobs are a tremendous responsibility and would not get accomplished if it wasn’t for the wonderful and continued support of our amazing volunteers throughout the year! THANK YOU!

WEB CLASS

Another celebration for Cerro Villa is our WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) class. In our fourth year, under the direction of Mrs. Liisa Buchness, this collection of 8th grade leaders have been very successful at helping our 7th graders feel welcome and integrated in our school. Beginning on August 22nd, the day before school started, WEB leaders met with 7th graders to help with their transition from elementary to middle school. The day was an extremely positive experience for all!

PBIS/HERO

We are excited to implement the HERO program as one way for PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) to flourish this year. HERO encourages positive student behavior choices. When students demonstrate HERO behaviors, they may earn points toward exciting incentives. We appreciate you having a HERO account to keep the lines of communication between home and school open.

LCAP Survey

We would appreciate your input in completing the 2017-2018 LCAP Parent & Community Survey. The survey is essential in informing our actions outlined in our district LCAP.

We look forward to answering any questions you may have (714-997-6251) and thank you for taking the time to participate.

On Thursday, September 28, under the direction of choir director, Ms. Grace Moriguchi, several singers performed afterschool for a packed audience in our “coffee house” auditorium. Congratulations to the following students: Savannah, Normalee, Kara, Samantha, Leany, Maritza, Alaenah, Ezekiel, Callie, Caitlin, Cal, Bella, Jasmine, Makenzie, Bradley, and Elise!

ASB Fundraiser

Thank you for your generosity and support in our recent fundraiser. A special thank you to Mrs. Simons and Mrs. Cassara for chairing the event, and the many other parent volunteers for your continued time and assistance. The following items have been possible due to past fundraising: tables and chairs replaced in the library, 50-year-old cafeteria tables replaced, lighting in the auditorium updated and replaced, motivational speaker at student assembly, and the addition of speakers on the cafeteria side of the auditorium. We are so grateful!

2nd School-Wide Read

We are excited to begin our second school-wide read around the book, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio! A school-wide read promotes academic conversations among all teachers and students on campus around a common text, practices school-wide pedagogical strategies (such as “Marking the Text”), and creates a commonality in school culture, while participating in an engaging text. Thank you, Ms. Matthews, our Library Media Specialist, for organizing! Stay tuned for engaging activities and events planned around Wonder. Reading is planned to begin Thursday, October 12.

Fall Conference/workshop

As a bridge between elementary (one-to-one parent conferences) and high school (no school-wide parent conferences), Cerro Villa hosts student-led conferences. On Thursday, October 5, from 3-5 p.m. we began with a goal session by the student shared with parent and then attend three of the four sessions provided to meet with staff over various topics pertinent to the middle school student success: study skills, technology, growth mindset, and “What’s up on campus?” Please see our school website for details www.cerrovilla.org.

Coffee with Counselors

On Tuesday, August 29, our counselors and school psychologist presented in “meet & greet” fashion their roles and how they assist students at the middle school level. Please stay tuned for future meetings, each time focused on a

different topic. This coming Tuesday, October 10, counselors will focus on ways to have Middle School success. It is a meeting you won’t want to miss. We look forward to seeing you from 8- 8:30 a.m. in the school library!

PSAT- Wednesday, October 11

On Wednesday, October 11, the College Board exam of the PSAT 8/9 will be administered district-wide to current 8th grade students. On this Wednesday, all 8th graders will report to school at regular time of 7:55 a.m. Seventh graders will attend at late start time of 9:20 a.m. Please see the attached schedule, links for further reference, or contact the school office at 714-997-6251 with any questions. Thank you.

Seventh Grade Dance

Our first school dance was this past Friday, September 29th. A huge thank you to our leadership class for our “Aloha” themed dance that generated the greatest attendance and participation for a dance here at CV in years. Seventh graders had a fabulous time participating in various games, raffles, hula-hoop contests, face painting, balloon creations, while enjoying fabulous music and food. Stay tuned for the eighth grade dance on November 3rd.

FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION

Section 5 of Article IX of the California Constitution guarantees students a “free and appropriate public education”. The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell, “that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extracurricular as well as curricular, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities”. This same ruling found that “mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities as drama, music, and athletic competition were illegal under the State constitution”. Furthermore, the State Supreme Court also rejected the argument that “fees could be charged as long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay”. I would like to assure you that Cerro Villa Middle School does not engage in a “pay for play” system.

I look forward to working with you to make this school year a huge success!

Sincerely,

Lisa Ogan
