Student News West State InterSchool Field & Game competition at Swan Hill Eight students travelled to Dunolly in Central Victoria via the well renowned "Clunes Bakery" to shoot in a club competition on the way up to the big Swan Hill school shoot. Robbie McGavin & Bobbie Jamieson both in Year 7 Barrabool and in their first year shooting excelled in the wet conditions. Robbie was first in his sub junior member's section with 18/24 and Bobbie 2nd in non members. The purchase of two umbrellas prior to leaving Swan Hill proved worthwhile. Necessary rain for local farmers fell througout the day. It was a most worthwhile outing for the GGS shooting team. Robbie McGavin Year 7 Barrabool Mr Oman TIC Trap Shooting

Year 6 Debating On Thursday 28 August Chris Wade, Isabella Hallmark, Sasha Tivey and I went in a mini bus with Mr. Carlisle to Highton Primary School to for an Interschool debate. It was a spontaneous debate so when we got there we went straight to our debating rooms to prepare. I won best speaker even though I thought our second and first speaker Sasha and Isabella did just as well as I did. It was a fun day and we won and we have now won all three of our debates. Special mention must go to Chris Wade who was very helpful in sorting out any disputes during the preparation of the debate. Tristan Yip Year 6 Highton On Thursday 28 of August my Year 6 debating team went to Hamlyn Banks Primary School. It was a spontaneous debate with half an hour to prepare. My team was Florian Watters, Kitty Middleton and Laurenz Watters with Olivia Batten away at snow sports. We had the topic: “Parents should be allowed to smack their children.” We were the affirmative team. We debated against Hamlyn Banks Primary. Kitty was our first speaker, Florian our second and I was our third speaker. My team defeated Hamlyn Banks by two points where I got best speaker. We enjoyed our experience and look forward to round 4 in two weeks. Laurenz Watters Year 6 Highton

MS Play Auditions Auditions for the Middle School Play are now well underway. Lots of students have chosen to audition and all is progressing for performances on 20, 21 and 22 November. Best wishes to all.

Raffles, hampers and special auction items, including a complete cryovaced lamb, courtesy of Clive and Anna Jamieson, tickets to a Day on the Green at Mount Duneed Estate, courtesy of Matthew and Sue Browne, saw us raise over $1500 on the night. Thank you to all who attended and supported this occasion.

Chaplain’s Corner A number of Year 7 and 8 students have recently been reflecting on their encounters with the world of spiritualty this year either in the Chapel or the classroom at Corio.

Unfailingly these were positive. Even though they had been exhorted to consider any negative experiences, had these happened none chose to retell them. One that struck your correspondent’s fancy linked our Anzac Day service with a recent commemoration of the start of WW1 and a Chapel service which honoured the Anglican New Guinea martyrs of WW2. The writer reflected sensitively on the impact these events had particularly on the families of those called to serve. War dead are always to be lamented even if the cause seems just but for every person killed there will be many more wounded, permanently physically disabled or left with a range of psychiatric difficulties. There will be women without husbands, and now over time men without wives. There will be partners and parents lost. And if the state calls for these sacrifices on our behalf then we must accept our responsibility, through the tax system and other means, to support those who bear the most immediate personal burdens. All this while not failing to support the many voluntary agencies, Legacy for one, which keep on giving. Jesus reminds us of the poor widow who offered two small coins at a moment when rich people were also making gifts. ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on”. Do we give only from abundance or from poverty too? Howard Parkinson
