Because of this fact we cannot test all MHJH students at once. We must separate the exam dates and times so that we can ad- minister these tests with the proper availabil- ity of both. Please refer to the testing schedule that is included in the newsletter. Most of our testing days account for a morning testing group and an afternoon testing group. While one grade level is test- ing on a particular date the other two grade levels at MHJH are on a normal school schedule. We are even turning off the bells on testing days to minimize disruption for our test takers. On the majority of our testing days we are arranging the students in the main gym, arena style. Approximately 200 kids will test in that location. Stu- dents needing accommodations and special assistance will be housed in the library and computer labs. We believe that we have organized state testing to the best of our ability for the kids consid- ering all of the many stipulations and requirements. Our testing co- ordinators at MHJH are Assistant Principal Johnny Bollin, and School Counselors Larissa Collins and Kathryn Thompson. They are to be commended for their efforts to organize this daunting task. State testing began in March with the administration of the grade 7 English Language Arts exam. All went according to plan and the students were able to concentrate and focus on the exam according- ly. We must remember that our kids are resilient and that they are in tune to a world filled with technology. I believe they prefer testing electronically. More testing is scheduled in the month of April. In addition we will have two late arrival days in which only test takers are required to be at school at the normal start time of 7:45 a.m. All other students not scheduled to test are to arrive for a start time of 11:15. Please be advised that in order to take advantage of the late arrival schedule transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Bus transportation will run at its normal scheduled time. The late arrival test dates are April 19th for testing in Algebra and Geometry and April 20th for testing in Grade 8 Science and Biology. Interested in learning more about these exams? State test administration is an important topic and much time and energy goes into the prepa-ration and organization of this Ohio Depart-ment of Education requirement. Third Quarter Student Academic Achievement

Study Table Initiative at MHJH

Congratulations to all of the students at MHJH that attained high marks for our third grading period! Once again we have many students that attained Merit Roll, Honor Roll, and Principal’s Roll distinction. These students are to be commended for a job well done! In addition, the parents are also to be commended for their efforts to support academic success at home. These marks reflect the collaborative efforts of the students, parents, and staff of MHJH working in cooperation. It is our goal at MHJH to continually seek ways to increase these numbers and encourage student academic achieve-ment. We will continue to provide academic support and intervention so that all students are able to achieve at a high level. Our third quarter num-bers reflect that we have many students that are academically succeeding! We are extremely proud of these students! On behalf of all staff at MHJH we want to thank you for making MHJH proud!

April is the time for the Dash for Dignity at MHJH! The 6th Annual Dash4Dignity is scheduled for April 29th, 2017! This is a 5k run or walk that seeks to benefit a local charitable organization or cause. Grade 8 Eng-lish Language Arts teacher Amanda Prok is the event organizer and we are very fortunate that she organizes this event for our school community! All proceeds from the D4D will go toward supporting her in this fight and support her medical costs associated with this battle. Check out the video link below for more info about Ashley!

The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geo-graphic Society, designed to inspire and re-ward students' curiosity about the world. Students from 10,000 schools across the United States competed in the 2017 Na-tional Geographic Bee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic Bee Champion. Middleburg Heights Junior High participated this year with the support of the Social Stud-ies department and Mrs. Jennings.

Congratulations to this year’s winner in the school Geographic Bee: MHJH 7th grader Ethan Barker. Congratulations also to MHJH 7th grader, Eliza Duke who came in a close second. Ethan took a qualifying test and he is now eligible for the state Bee! The seventh graders at MHJH will once again have the opportunity to take a field trip to Progressive Field for their annual Weather Education Day sponsored by the Cleveland Indians! The event is scheduled for May 17th, 2017! The students will take part in a program regarding weather re-ports and the technology and science asso-ciated with predicting weather. This takes place at the ball park; therefore, as part of the program the kids will get to see our American League Champion Cleveland In-dians live in action! The Indians will play

the Tampa Bay Rays; first pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. Students will also receive lunch as part of the program, the best of the ball park experience! We are very fortunate to have Tom Andrews, grade 7 math teacher and trip advisor organize this trip for our kids!! Students must maintain good academic and be-havioral standards in order to attend this special field trip; this information has been shared with them at a special assembly in March. This will prove to once again be a fun and exciting day for our 7th grade class!! Go Tribe!!

Ninth Grade End of the Year Trip: Good Times Boat Experience!! The ninth grade class at MHJH will have the opportunity to take part in an end of the school year field trip. The destination this year is an experience on the Good Times Boat touring the north shore of downtown Cleveland!! Students will get the chance to tour along the city’s shore and ex-perience the city from Lake Erie! Kids will also get an opportunity for lunch outside of school that goes along with the day’s experience. Ninth graders will be introduced to the trip at an assembly where they will review trip expectations and the criteria needed to attend. The field trip will take place on Thursday, May 18th. The trip should last the majority of the school day.

The criteria to attend is as follows:

Student Eliminated from Participation for:

Expulsion Recommendation

Out of School Suspension

Two Saturday Detentions

Bus Suspension

Failing 2 Classes (progress reports May 5th)

(effective as of the fourth grading period)

It is our hope that all ninth grade students get to attend. This should be a fun and educational experience for our freshman students. As usual, another criteria to attend is that all students must have past due fees paid in advance of the trip. Please call our financial secretary at MHJH at 216-676-8400 Ext 7767 if you have any questions regarding past due fees. The trip will come with a minimal cost. We will communicate more information with parents as the trip date draws closer. Todd Stratford, Ninth Grade Class Advisor, and Russ Krivak, Grade Nine Administrator, will serve as the trip coordinators. Chaperones may be needed! We will also communicate this request well in advance of the May 18th trip date.

Special Thanks to the MHJH Builders Club Members for their participation in the annual Food Wars event that is conducted to help support local food banks in Berea, Brook Park, and Middleburg Heights. The food wars are a grade level competition where students bring in canned goods and non-perishable items for donation. Each grade level has a goal of 1,000 items. The grade level that reaches that goal gets to have that grade level assistant principal pied in the face in front of the student body!! With each grade level that attains their goal I also get pied in the face as principal of the school!! Grade 7 math teacher Tom Andrews and FCS teacher Michelle Botzman serve as our Builders Club Advisors; they did a fantastic job!! We are proud to report that we had two grade levels that attained their goal - grade 7 and grade 8. Over 2,000 items have been donated!! Therefore, Dr. Ruman and Mr. Bollin got their faces dirty with pie. I also had to get my face pied as well!! This event was conducted on Friday, March 24th, at halftime of the annual staff vs. student basketball game. The basket-ball game is held on the last day prior to spring break as a fundraiser for the Dash for Digni-ty to help offset costs of the 5k event. Grade 8 ELA teacher Amanda Prok serves as the Dash for Dignity organizer and Basketball Game organizer; she does an outstanding job for MHJH with both of these events!! This was a very fun day for the students that also is evidence of their giving spirit. We are extremely proud of our kids for their participation and support of these two very important and worthy causes. The staff won the game in a very close contest; congratulations to the staff members participating and special thanks to the ninth grade basketball players that represented the students in the contest!! All of these individuals are to be commended for a job well done!! MHJH Pride is District Wide!!
