Middlemist Bestiary - Unleashed 4

INTRODUCTION"Herein lie the fabled ones. From out of the Abysmal pitthey came and unto the world of men; crawling beastsof the dark lord, green fleshed apes and dire fellcreatures stalking the fund of sanity. Behold, ye goodepeople of the great Middle Land, the children of thedisassemblers are come to herald thy ruin..."From 'A Comprehensive Bestiary of Middlemist‘s manyMonstrosities, by the Azellindor scholar PedderfallFletcherson

The Middlemist bestiary is an extensive listing of all themonsters, races and beings found within the campaignsetting of Middlemist. Statistics including attributes, skills, feats or any other frps specific scoring system areomitted from descriptions, allowing for genericintegration into the game system of your choice.Gamesmasters should either try to figure stats forspecific creatures by checking the nearest match in theirown game system's monster manual or create statisticsthemselves from scratch. All creatures are listed inalphabetical order.

Note: The monsters and races of Undersea are notincluded in this bestiary which only covers the surfaceworld of Middlemist. Similarly the exotic creatures of theLands of Myth are not included, nor the many variants offaeryland monster which belong exclusively to the realmof faeries.

A note on the use of proper names in this bestiary

The named races and species whose names areentymological and not bestial are preceded with acapital letter, indicating them to be proper names. Inthe dwarf dialect these names are preceded by asuperscript rune, while the elves use capital letters inthe same way as humans. The dominant races, humans(or men), dwarfs, elves, hobbits, halflings, orcs, goblins, ogres and bugbears do not begin with a capital letter orsuperscript rune but sub-species, such as the Chaosdwarf or the Abarimon humans, are superceded by acapital.

Animal species, variations of an entymological or civilisedrace and mixed race species are not preceded by acapital letter or superscript rune. Animal classifications, such as named types of spider, are marked as propernames. i.e. The term bat is not a proper name while theterm Ahool (a classification of bat) is.

Al

AbarimonA race of humans found in Sendrica. They havebackwards feet but are capable of incrediblespeeds when running. Their skin is slightlymottled suggesting some kind of leopard-likecamouflage. They are a race of wild-men,lacking intelligence and civility.

AbolethAmphibian monstrosity, haunts rivers and freshwater lakes. A great fish with golden fins andthree red eyes. It stings with whipping tentaclesand thrives on the memories of those itconsumes. The aboleth may be encounterednear the shoreline where the hump of its backrising above the water will resemble nothingmore sinister than a mottled boulder.

AbyormeniteFloating, limbless balloonsup to twenty feet in width. TheAbyormentites are a race ofintelligent creatures that live atextremely high altitude and arerarely encountered by theground-based races. They may beseen, during the summer season,as they migrate from Minaqua anddown toward Clanmarch wherethey spend the warm moon-seasons. The Abyormentite'salpha predator is the Weaver butthe Arakokla (see below) arealso a danger to theAbyormenite, particularlywhen migrating flocks passover the Cragfire mountains.Though intelligent,Abyormenites speak nolanguage. Instead theycommunicate with a basic form oftelepathy using mentalpictures rather than speech.

Addertongue SpiderTiny spider with distinctive bright blue legs andsmall yellow body. A highly poisonous andterritorial arachnid. A bite from theAddertongue spider will prove fatal unless anantidote is quickly employed.

AhoolGiant long-eared vampire bat. common toplains and hills, the Ahool is carnivorous andnocturnal, hunting at night. despite its name, the Ahool is not a vampire.

AkkiSmall, mischievous, dimwitted goblin that live inthe Arnheim mountain range of Iugoria. Theyare small, long-armed, shelled creatures whotake great delight in pulling tricks on travellers.

Unfortunately, these tricksgenerally involve the launching

of avalanches, fire traps, or justsimple yet savage beatings.

AlAls are evil, magical

creatures that lurk indark places. They are

half human andhalf animal, with red eyes, long thick hair, sharp teeth, talons, and thetusks of aboar.

They sometimescarry clubs orequally crude

weapons andhave the

enviable abilityto turn semi-invisible

at will.In truly dark places suchas dungeons or caves

this effectively rendersthe Al completely invisible.Als prefer damp dark places

Angel/Archerian

like caves, cellars and tree hollows as forms ofhabitat. They grow no taller than two feet inheight but are capable of leaping twice as high.

AlmaA human-like species said to inhabit theCragfire mountains of North Urmshiem. Theyare described as hairy, except for their handsand feet, and are extremely feral. May berelated to the feral human.

AmphisbaenaThere are no Medusa any more. They werewiped out by a sensible king many thousands of

yearsago

during a crusade against evil. However, thesnakes that comprised the hair of the Medusa(Amphisbaena) still exist, though they are rare. They are usually encountered in or near thelairs of long dead Medusa. This may be a desertruin, a dungeon or an old castle or similar. Herethey subsist by feeding on insects and grubs. An Amphisbaena is no more dangerous orimpressive to look at than a grass snake, butthey have powerful properties when used as amagical ingredient in the concocting of potionsand as such are much sought after by wizardsand mages.

Angel (Planar creature)The foot soldiers of the Celestial gods. Thereare only a handful remaining. Most lost theirimmortality to the evil gods during theCelestial war when Tyr threw Draegor and hisallies into the Abyss. All angels are lawful bynature, capable of flight and powerful incombat. Most are humanoid in appearance, wear ceremonial armour and wield divine

weapons capable ofstriking down the strongest demon.

AnkhegThe Ankheg is a monstrous anthropodwith the body of a giant scorpion (minus

the tail sting) and the chitinousexoskeleton of a giant beetle. The Ankheg

dwell in shallow underground holes. Theycover themselves with a 'trapdoor' of packed

earth and wait for the tell tale vibrations of preypassing overhead, at which point they explode

from their lair and grab their victimwith two serrated mandibles situated at thefront of their head. If attacked an Ankheg willspit acid to subdue its attacker. They aresometimes found in the plains of northernMistleburg, but Ankheg are native to the deep

wild lands of Forsthelm.

ArakoklaA race of birdmen who dwell in thehigh mountains of the northern

Cragfires. The Arakokla resemblelarge birds with humanoid bodies.

Archon (Balorus)

They speak their ownlanguage and possesslimited intelligence. They are hostile towardother races.

Archerian (Planarcreature)

Protectors of the Celestialplanes. TheArcherian havecharged themselves withthe protection of all whoare free of evil and areresponsible for the defenceof all good souls within theeternal paradise of theCelestial Planar. Archerians arebeautiful guardians who wearspectacular armour andceremonialclothing and carrypowerful and magicalweapons. Most archerianshave wings, some bat-like, some feathery. All canfly.

Archon (demon)The Archon are anti-angelicinhabitants of the Abysmal Planarmore commonly knownby the name ‘demon‘.They wander theunhallowed soil of Xorn,Abaddon, Hades and Tartarus under thewatchful gaze of the three Demon Kings (seeabove).

Demons are 'fallen angels', once angelservants of the gods now cast from the CelestialCourt to dwell in the black pit of the Abyss aspunishment for alligning with Draegor duringthe Celestial war.

They serve their master still, but they nolonger resemble the beautiful creatures theyonce were. The Abyss and the dire attentions ofthe demon kings have changed them intostrangely deformed creatures with cruel faces

and protruding horns. The necroscrytors, necromancers and dark

clerics of Middlemist often summon demons toserve them on the material plane. Each demonis a servant to a particular evil god and thenecroscrytor will always summon a demonrelative to his particular need and usually withthe help of worshippers loyal to the god servedby the summoned demon.

Some demons are individual servants of gods, others are commandants of hellish legions ofdemi-fiends who will manifest with the masterwhen summoned and serve his/her command.

The summoning of demons is an imprecise
