“The future doesn’t just happen… it’s created.”

Danielle Higgins attended the general educational Development (geD) daytime class and even start family learning program at middletown adult education.

Since her initial enrollment in February, 2012, Danielle clearly set her sights on passing the GED examination. With a genuinely cheerful attitude, Danielle regularly demonstrated her perseverance in the classroom. Although get-ting to school with her young child was some-times difficult, Danielle arrived punctually to class, eager and prepared to learn. Danielle’s persistence and steady attendance led to her success in passing the GED Writing, Science, and Social Studies, and Mathematics tests.

In July, 2012, Danielle will begin a CNA program at Middlesex Community College. Looking toward the future, Danielle plans to pursue a nursing degree. All of us at Middletown Adult Education wish Danielle much happiness and success.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling but rising every time we fall.”

neDP graduates are successful! When Tonia Burr’s employer of fifteen years went out of busi-ness last year, she found herself out of work and missing the job she loved as an Assistant-Manager in a video store. Tonia began a new journey by listening to the experiences of her friend, Michael, who had also been laid off earlier in the year. He went back to school at Middletown Adult Education’s National External Degree Program (NEDP), earned his di-ploma, and went on to attend college and pursue a new ca-reer. Could Tonia do this too? She quit school over thirty years earlier. With Michael’s example and encouragement and with the flexibility of the NEDP opportunity, Tonia soon overcame her fears. She says now, “I never thought I’d do it,” but she graduated in June 2012. Today, Tonia and Michael are benefitting from the flexible, hands-on opportu-nity offered to them by the guidance and supportive staff of the NEDP program in Old Saybrook. Tonia Burr missed op-portunities that never materialized because a completed high school program was missing in her resume. Now that she has completed her high school program, Tonia is pursuing a career she had only dreamed about in her younger days. At present, Tonia really wants to help other people and become a source of strength to them. She is preparing to become a counselor in the prison environment where she feels her abilities and talents will be used best.
