AC Coupled

• Adds battery backup to a purely grid tie system.

• Adds some complexity to the system.

• Best suited for existing grid tie systems as an add on.

AC Coupled

What is AC Coupled ?

AC Coupling is a controlled back feed to a battery based inverter A back feed is hooking up AC to the output of an inverter AC coupling is a synchronized back feed. The grid tie inverter shifts frequency to match the battery based inverter before connecting. This makes it ok to do.



Not all battery based sinewave inverters are capable of back feed.

Your choices in North America are:

SMA Sunny IslandOutback FX, VFX and

RadianMagnum PAE seriesSchneider XW series


• Magnum and OutBack inverters sense circuits that control charging are on the AC inputs not the output, therefore cannot control the charging

• These inverters charge wide open and cannot taper off.

• A relay is required to disconnect the GT



• SMA and Schneider use frequency shift to knock the GT inverter offline to stop the charging.

• The Sunny Island will control a Sunny Boy to do tapered charging.



Generators and AC Coupled

• Radian and the Schneider have 2 AC inputs so a generator can be added.

• Provisions must be added to disconnect the GT inverter when the generator runs or the GT will try to sell to the Inverter.


Sizing Of The Off Grid Inverter

• Outback, Magnum and Schneider have a 1:1 ratio limit.

• SMA has a 2:1 ratio

• The customer may not need all of the grid tie solar as part of the ac coupled.


Outback FX series

• 120 vac per single unit.• Either Grid tie or Off Grid

not both. Both AC couple.• Grid tie models (G series)

does not play well with generators.

• Smaller scale and expandable.

• 12,24 and 48VDC models available
