bernstein centennial summerCelebrating Lenny at Tanglewood!

“That place [Tanglewood] is very dear to my heart, that is where I grew up and learned so much...in 1940 when I first played and studied there.”

—Leonard Bernstein (November 1989)Throughout the summer of 2018, Tanglewood celebrates the centennial of Lawrence-born, Boston-bred conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth. Bernstein’s close relationship with the Boston Symphony Orchestra spanned a half-century—from the time he became a protégé of legendary BSO conductor Serge Koussevitzky as a member of the first Tanglewood Music Center class in 1940, until the final concerts he ever conducted, with the BSO and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra at Tanglewood in 1990. In addition to concert works including his Chichester Psalms (7/15), alil for flute and orchestra (7/21), Songfest (8/4), the Serenade (after Plato’s “Symposium”) for violin and orchestra (8/18), and the BSO-commissioned Divertimento for Orchestra (also 8/18), performances also include the operas Trouble in Tahiti (7/12) and A Quiet Place (8/9); the Broadway hit On the Town (7/7); Candide (8/22 & 23); the ballet Fancy Free in collaboration with Boston Ballet (8/18), and the Oscar-winning film version of West Side Story with the BSO playing the score live as the movie is shown on large screens in high definition with the original vocals and dialogue intact (7/28). On August 25, Bernstein’s birth-date, “The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood,” to be conducted by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons,

Christoph Eschenbach, Keith Lockhart, Michael Tilson Thomas, and John Williams, will feature an extraordinary array of guest artists, among them Audra McDonald, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Susan Graham, and Thomas Hampson. In addition, the BSO will be joined for this very special occasion by members of numerous other orchestras with which Bernstein maintained close associations, including the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Pacific Music Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

stellar soloists and conductorsAlso leading Boston Symphony concerts will be BSO Artistic Partner Thomas Adès, pairing with Christian Tetzlaff for Sibelius’s Violin Concerto (7/22), BSO Assistant Conductor Moritz Gnann, leading a program featuring pianist Paul Lewis in Mozart (7/13), and BSO Associate Conductor Ken-David Masur, partnering with 2018 Koussevitzky Artist Kirill Gerstein in Rachmaninoff (8/3). Guest conductors include Herbert Blomstedt (7/20 & 21), Christoph Eschenbach (8/26), Juanjo Mena (7/17 & 29), David Newman (7/28), Dima Slobodeniouk (8/5), Michael Tilson Thomas (8/12), and Bramwell Tovey (8/4). Soloists with the BSO also include pianists Emanuel Ax in Mozart (7/20), Igor Levit playing Rachmaninoff (8/12), and Garrick Ohlsson with more Mozart (7/27); BSO principal flute Elizabeth Rowe in Bernstein’s alil (7/21); and violinists Joshua Bell performing Wieniawski (8/5) and Gil Shaham playing Prokofiev (7/29).

opening night and more withbso music director andris nelsonsBesides his participation in “The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood” and performances with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (TMCO), Andris Nelsons joins forces with acclaimed pianist Lang Lang to open the BSO’s summer season with an enticing program of Mozart and Tchaikovsky (Opening Night at Tanglewood, 7/6). Maestro Nelsons pairs with pianists Rudolf Buchbinder for Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (7/8), Yuja Wang for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (7/15), and Yefim Bronfman for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 (8/17), and also conducts a complete, semi-staged performance of Puccini’s La bohème with soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Piotr Beczala in the lead roles (7/14); a special Young People’s Concert evoking those led by Bernstein himself, with Bernstein’s daughter Jamie Bernstein as host (8/10); an all-Bernstein program featuring violinist Baiba Skride in the Serenade (after Plato’s “Symposium”) (8/18), and Mahler’s Third Symphony with soloist Susan Graham (8/24). In addition, Maestro Nelsons leads the TMCO’s annual Leonard Bernstein Memorial Concert, this year with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist in Bernstein’s Three Meditations from Mass and the world premiere of a new work by John Williams written especially for the occasion (8/19), and joins John Williams on the podium for John Williams’ Film Night (8/11).

bso artistic partner thomas adèsNow in his second season as BSO Artistic Partner, the gifted British composer-conductor-pianist Thomas Adès leads the BSO in a suite from his opera Powder Her Face on a program with Sibelius’s Violin Concerto featuring Christian Tetzlaff (7/22); directs Tanglewood’s 2018 Festival of Contemporary Music (7/26–30); leads the final program of that Festival, featuring 2018 Koussevitzky Artist Kirill Gerstein with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in Adès’s own In Seven Days for piano and orchestra (7/30); and joins forces again with Kirill Gerstein for an evening of two-piano music in Ozawa Hall (8/1).

2018 koussevitzky artist kirill gersteinThe versatile Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein is this summer’s Koussevitzky Artist, named for the Tanglewood Festival’s visionary founder Serge Koussevitzky, and created to honor artists whose presence at the BSO’s summer home has made a lasting impact on Tanglewood’s musical and educational programs. Besides his two collaborations with BSO Artistic Partner Thomas Adès—closing the 2018 Festival of Contemporary as soloist in Adès’s In Seven Days with Adès conducting the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (7/30), and joining Adès for an evening of two-piano music in Ozawa Hall (8/1)—2018 Koussevitzky Artist Kirill Gerstein is also soloist in this year’s gala Tanglewood on Parade concert, performing Gershwin’s ever-popular Rhapsody in Blue (8/7).

tanglewood music center highlightsIn addition to the full, season-long schedule of chamber music and vocal concerts by the talented young musicians of the Tanglewood Music Center—including Prelude Concerts prior to the Saturday-night BSO concerts, and wide-ranging, full-length TMC concerts on Sunday mornings—highlights of the TMC’s 2018 season include TMC Orchestra performances to be led by Andris Nelsons (7/9), Herbert Blomstedt (7/16), Stefan Asbury (7/23, a program featuring the world premiere of a new, TMC-commissioned work by Michael Gandolfi), and Thomas Adès with soloist Kirill Gerstein (7/30). Andris Nelsons is also on the podium for a special TMC Chamber Orchestra concert (8/13) and the annual Leonard Bernstein Memorial Concert, this year featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma in Bernstein’s Three Meditations from Mass and the world premiere of a new work by John Williams (8/19). Another major highlight: a fully staged performance of Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place, in a recent new version for chamber ensemble by Garth Edwin Sunderland, featuring the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and TMC Vocal Fellows with Stefan Asbury conducting and directed by Daniel Fish (8/9).

A collaboration with choreographer Jerome Robbins and the writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town—the story of three sailors on shore leave in New York City—arrived on Broadway in December 1944, when he was just twenty-six. Based on his popular ballet collaboration with Robbins, Fancy Free (being performed August 18), it was not only his first musical, it was a first for Comden and Green, who would become Broadway and Hollywood legends in their own right. Hit songs include “New York, New York” and “Some Other Time.”

The lyrical, jazzy style of Leonard Bernstein’s 1952 one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti has much in common with On the Town (July 7) and West Side Story (July 28). Bernstein himself wrote the libretto; the scenario revolves around Dinah and her husband Sam’s disaffection with their rat-race, suburban life. The plot has nothing to do with Tahiti; the title comes from a romantic movie Dinah contrasts with her workaday, unromantic existence. Trouble in Tahiti was premiered in June 1952 at Brandeis University, where Bernstein was on the faculty, and was presented by NBC on television the following November.

Conceived as a sequel to his 1952 one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti (being performed July 12), and to be heard here in a recent new version for chamber ensemble, A Quiet Place—Bernstein’s final work for the stage—was originally premiered in 1983 on a double bill with Trouble in Tahiti. Providing an intimate picture of family relationships, the story rejoins Sam from Trouble in Tahiti years later, following Dinah’s unexpected death. Entering the picture are their son Junior, daughter Dede, and her husband (and Junior’s former boyfriend) François. The final, closing scene for Sam and the three young people brings closure and hope to their lives.

When Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins created the hit ballet Fancy Free in 1944, each was just twenty-five years old. Bernstein’s first ballet score and Robbins’ first full-scale choreographic effort, it catapulted both men to stardom. In what would become his signature style, Robbins combined classical choreography with jazz and popular dance moves. Just months after Fancy Free was premiered at the old Metropolitan Opera House, its scenario had become the basis for Bernstein and Robbins’ hit Broadway musical On the Town (being performed July 7). Fancy Free will be presented here in collaboration with Boston Ballet, using Robbins’s original choreography.

Leonard Bernstein’s delightful 1956 comic operetta Candide is based on the 18th-century philosopher Voltaire’s satirical novel, which follows the title character’s traumatic adventures in imperial Europe and semi-civilized South America. All the while, his teacher’s philosophy of “All’s for the best in this best of all possible worlds” is put to the test. Candide’s vain sweetheart Cunegonde undergoes even worse trials as they’re separated and reunited. Lillian Hellman wrote the original play; the song lyrics were mostly by poet Richard Wilbur. The score includes such familiar numbers as “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.”

Reflecting the season-long theme, The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood spotlights Bernstein’s wide-ranging talents as a composer, his many gifts as a great interpreter and champion of other composers, and his role as an inspirer of a new generation of musicians and music lovers across the country and around the globe. The gala concert will feature a kaleidoscopic array of artists and ensembles from the worlds of classical music, film, and Broadway. The entire first half of the program is dedicated to selections from such brilliant Bernstein works as Candide, West Side Story, Mass, and Serenade. Music from the classical canon very dear to Bernstein’s heart—selections from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and music by Copland—plus a new work by John Williams, makes up a good portion of the program’s second half; the finale of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony brings the concert to a dramatic close.

*joined by members of the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Pacific Music Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
