Drew LaMontagna T206 Mid‐term Project Song: Out Last Night Kenny Chesney Photograph 1: I chose to take this photograph because I wanted to show the beginning stages of getting ready to go out. I particularly enjoy the color composition in this, as it ranges across the color spectrum as well in addition to the colors not necessarily “agreeing” with one other. What I mean by that is the fact that, for example, the toothbrush and toothpaste are both lightly colored, while the background and cologne bottle are more of a darker shade. I think this gives the photograph an extra quality rather than having all light colors or all dark colors. I chose to take it next to a mirror because I wanted the mirror image to symbolize what the end of the night would look like. The mirror image is a bit blurrier and everything seems to be a little bit foggy, yet it is still in sight, which is important. Finally the shot glass is representative of what lies ahead for the hours to come, half filled of course, seeing that one has already gotten a head start. Photograph 2: This photograph was a bit difficult to capture. In my head I wanted to capture the essence of fun and partying, going out with friends and having a good time. I felt as if this picture could do a good job of such. When taking it I wanted to make sure that there were a variety of colors, symbolizing happiness and fun, the good in life. I also wanted to make sure that there was some sort of alcohol in the background to give it that party feel. At first I took a picture from below, symbolizing the presence of alcohol and the amount of power that it accounts for through this song. However when I did that, I did not get near as many colors as I wanted to. Because of this I decided to sacrifice the angle for more quality, and I think it turned out for the better. Photograph 3: This photograph resembles the second line of the verse, or at least I thought the two have a good comparison. I wanted to show the after math of a night out, or what I imagined the song was portraying. I specifically enjoy the reflection of the alcohol against the grain of the wood; if you look closely you can see the color of the shot glass in the small puddle reflection. Towards the back is a bottle of Malibu as well as a half empty beer glass. However the beer glass up towards the front of the picture is what I tried to focus on mostly because I wanted capture it at a low angle to portray the beer being large, important, making it give the off the idea that the beer is significant, being that you cannot even see the top of the glass. Photograph 4: Although this picture may seem simple, I am actually quite happy with the way the image turned out. My initial thought was to have a picture to display the beautiful nature of the trees flowing in the wind at night. However, once I actually went out and took a few pictures, I thought of a better idea. I then decided to alter the photograph, but not completely. I wanted to keep the lines and tree surroundings, but change the way I approached it. In this photograph I wanted to portray the idea that the night of fun partying was coming to a close, and the fact that one’s head may be spinning

quite a bit. Through the trees I was able to achieve this. If looking at this photograph you see a circular effect of branches, I have fulfilled my goal of the spinning affect. In addition to this I wanted to eliminate rule of thirds and center this frame in the photograph to create a more circular sense of spin, like a bulls eye or a hypnotic trance for example. Photograph 5: With this last photograph, I wanted to create a conclusion for this long night out of fun. This was a difficult picture to take because there were so many things I wanted to capture. Although this picture may seem cliché, I felt it was necessary to the story. It is also noteworthy that I intentionally wanted this photograph to be a little bit blurry, which is why I took it through a foggy glass. First and foremost I wanted to make sure that it was clear the night was over, which I believe I did. Secondly, I wanted to show the different variables throughout the whole story process. For example: A half empty beer was necessary to the photograph due to the previous pictures and the story that those photographs told, same applies with the empty shot glass lying on the ground. The book is there because in the verse, Kenny Chesney writes, “We went out last night, like we swore we wouldn’t do”. My interpretation of this was the notion that in the song, the group of people that went out had other, probably more important things to do, like study for a test, for example. I added the cowboy hat mostly because it is a country song and when I picture country I picture straw hats covering the majority of one’s face, especially for a person that has been drinking all night.

Out Last Night Kenny Chesney

We went out last night

Like we swore we wouldn't do Drank too much beer last night A lot more than we wanted to

When working through this project I wanted to bring my own creative aesthetic to the photographs and overall story. However, with that said, I did take 3 semesters of photography in high school where I learned quite a bit more than I imagined I would. In those classes, I was always interested in making the photographs and imagery my own, whether that meant focusing in on a certain object or capturing what I thought to tell a spectacular story. These are the sorts of things I tried to bring to this project. Also with this verse (as well as the entire song), my interpretation of it is that it is taking place at night and even early morning. I also was trying to simulate this when capturing images. Looking back, no matter how many times I took a certain photograph some just did not turn out like I imagined in my head, although I am very happy with the overall result. By the end of my project my hope is that a person just looking at the 5 pictures (without the descriptions) would be able to unconsciously develop a story inside their head of what they think the artist (in this case myself) is trying to convey.
