Midway Elementary School
Week of September 19th
Even though pumpkin spiced lattes and Halloween decorations have been around for a
few months, fall officially starts this week. That means cooler weather, lots of football, and fall
pictures. We have another great week ahead at Midway Elementary.
Good News Club will start this Tuesday after school. I have sent a list to our staff, so
they should know who will attend the club. It would be a good idea to send a reminder to your
teacher about this on Tuesday. Good News Club will dismiss at 4:00 at the main car loop.
Fall pictures will be this Thursday, so be sure to dress your student for picture day.
Strawbridge Studios will be sending proofs in 3-4 weeks with options on how you can purchase
photos of your student. These will be the photos that are in our yearbook. Our fall make-up day
is scheduled for November 4th.
Zaxby’s Night is this Thursday from 5:00-8:00. In order for Midway to receive credit for
your purchase, you will need to place your receipt in a box on the front counter or hand your
receipt to the drive-thru cashier and let them know you’re supporting Midway Elementary. I
know our school always shows up BIG for these events, and I truly appreciate your patience in
order to support our school. Wendy’s Night brought in over $200 for our school. Zaxby’s is
offering free kids’ meals and a teacher gift certificate to the class with the most participation, so
be sure to write your teacher(s) name on the receipt.
Interim report cards go home on Thursday. Lower grade levels will not be sending
interims home yet due to beginning of the year assessments and not having enough grades in
the grade book. If you would like to have to access this information at all times, you may sign up
for Parent Portal using this form. You may bring the form into the front office to Donna
Anderson or Jan Metz.
Lastly, you should be receiving information from your room parent or teacher about our
upcoming Fall Auction. Each class is creating a classroom basket to auction in order to support
our school. Midway’s class baskets are always impressive and highly sought after. We have
already started receiving items in the office!
I appreciate all you do to help make our school the best. Check out our Twitter,
Facebook, and Instagram pages to check out all of the great things happening at Midway or
email or call me anytime at [email protected] or 716-3800. We will continue to
do things the best way…
The Midway.

Staff Spotlight
Our Staff Spotlight this week is our Instructional Technology Support
Assistant, Lisa Costanzo. Lisa is in charge of Chromebook distributions
and issues; however, she does a lot more than that. She is our go-to
person with anything technology related in the classrooms and is always
available to cover duties, assist in the classroom, and lend a hand in the
library. This Tuesday is Technology Support Appreciation Day, and we are
lucky to have Lisa Costanzo on our staff.
The best way you can show your appreciation is to simply write a note of
thank you or encouragement. You can reach Mrs. Costanzo at

Kindergarten Kindergarten students enjoyed “coming to our senses” with our STEAM leader Sandy Bradshaw. We enjoyed hearing the story,
Mouse Paint, and completing a STEAM activity. We mixed primary colors together to make secondary colors. We used marshmallows
and food coloring to dance like the mice in the story.

First Grade In first grade, we have been learning about our great state,
South Carolina. We learned interesting facts about our state
from the book, P is for Palmetto. Now we know why our state
flag is blue and has the palmetto tree and crescent moon
featured on it!

Second Grade
This week, we participated in Dot Day! On September 15, 2003,
author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds released his book, “The
Dot.” In this book, we learn that a dot might be small, but it can be
a powerful way to show our uniqueness and creativity. Mr. Reynold’s
story inspired “International Dot Day” and the opportunity for
children to show their own creativity. After listening to this story,
groups were given a paper with a single dot on it and asked to
create something together. What a great way to boost our
creativity and work on cooperation too!

Third Grade We have been learning about map features including map
legend, compass rose, and scale. This week third graders
created a physical map of their own unique country with
landforms found on some physical maps.
Spotlight on
Fourth Grade This week, fourth grade students participated in a digital
escape room to review for their place value test! Students'
“cruise ship” was hijacked by pirates, and they had to problem
solve with their teams to unlock four codes and escape!
Spotlight on
Fifth Grade We have been learning about the flow of energy in an
ecosystem. Students researched and created a model food
chain to illustrate how energy flows through an ecosystem.

Learning Labs Miss Lewinski’s class built a barn with popsicle sticks for the
farm animals they have been learning about. This activity
focused on channeling their inner architect and developing
their fine motor and focusing skills.

Visual Arts Midway Artists were inspired by Kelsey Montague. Kelsey is an interactive
street artist, and founder of the #WhatLiftsYou global campaign.
Midway Artists K-5 used various colors, shapes and lines to create an original
feather design. The student’s individual feathers were all combined to create
the inspiring and interactive mural for our very own school!
