Komatsu Program Marks 60,000th Service Interval

Komatsu America Corp. and its distribu-tor, Columbus Equipment Company, announced the completion of KomatsuCAREs 60,000th service interval. KomatsuAmerica pioneered complimentary mainte-nance for Tier IV machines in the construc-tion industry with the launch of KomatsuCARE in 2011.The 60,000th interval was completed on a

Komatsu D61EXi-23. A service certificatewas presented to machine owner andColumbus Equipment Company customer,John Eramo & Sons Inc., at a ceremony tocelebrate the milestone. Eligible Komatsu Tier IV construction-

sized machines, whether rented, leased orpurchased, are covered by the KomatsuCARE program for the first three years or2,000 hours, whichever comes first.Komatsu CARE includes scheduled factorymaintenance, a 50-point inspection at eachservice and two complimentary Komatsudiesel particulate filter exchanges. For cer-tain Tier IV machines, diesel exhaust fluidtank flushes within the first five years areavailable as well.If lowering cost of ownership, improving

equipment uptime and reliability and pro-

tecting capital investment value are impor-tant to you, theres no better program avail-able than Komatsu CARE, said MikeHayes, director of service marketing and dis-tributor development of Komatsu AmericaCorp. No other OEM program offers thekind of protection Komatsu CARE does; itremains the first and most comprehensiveoffering in the marketplace. Working with distributors like Columbus

Equipment, our customers know theyllhave the resources and staff needed to maxi-mize machine productivity and minimizecosts. The Komatsu CARE program is similar

to complimentary maintenance programsthat have been very successful within theluxury auto industry. Those programs, likeKomatsu CARE, can increase residual valueon lease returns, increase the price of usedvehicle sales, and increase the longevity ofcomponent life, according to the companyFor more information, www.komat-

Wacker Neuson Equipment Aids inRestoration of Schlitz Nature Center

Schlitz Audubon Nature Centerlocated just north of Milwaukee, Wisc.,is dedicated to conservation and sus-tainability. When repairs or construc-tion projects are needed, the staff isfaced with unique challenges to pre-serve the natural state of the property. The repair of a pond dike and the con-struction of a wheel chair accessibletrail are two recent projects thatrequired special attention.

Dike Repair How to Keepthe Muskrats Out and

Water In The song Muskrat Love quickly

came to mind when Schlitz AudubonNature Center was faced with a dikerepair project. The 185-acre site is usedextensively for environmental educa-

tion programs and offers year-roundtrails for hiking and cross country ski-ing. Throughout the property there is aseries of lakes and ponds that are hometo turtles, tadpoles, frogs and minnowsand also provide a natural habitat formuskrats.

The nature centers most populararea is Mystery Lake and its smallerconnected pond, Mystery Pond. WhenMystery Pond was originally construct-

ed in the late 1980s, newly excavatedmaterial was placed along the pondsedge on top of the natural vegetation tobuild up a dike. Over the years, thedike has been compromised by rootsand vegetation, but mostly by themuskrats. The medium-sized semi-aquatic rodents burrowed their waythrough the dike creating 4 in. (10 cm)trenches, causing the water to seep outand resulting in water levels droppingup to 18 in. (46 cm).

According to Marc White, directorof conservation at Schlitz Audubon, itis important to maintain the pondswater levels.

Jason Festerling, facilities manag-er of Schlitz Audubon NatureCenter, used a Wacker NeusonEZ38 excavator to repair the natu-ral dike around Mystery Pond. Thedike needed to be rebuilt aftermuskrats burrowed through thedike, causing water levels in thepond to drop.

A natural waterway connects Mystery Lake and Mystery Pond at SchlitzAudubon Nature Center, Milwaukee, Wisc. The hydrologic connection isimportant for spawning fish.

With the help of Wacker Neusons ST35 compact track loader, the final300 ft. (91 m) of Schlitz Audubon Nature Centers ADA trail could be com-pleted. With a tight deadline to complete the project and a snowstormapproaching, the ST35 allowed the land crew to get the crusher finesloaded, moved and spread quickly. The outside lighting and heated cabcontributed to operator comfort and visibility.
