IDAHO BUSINESS REVIEW

Therapy-Conex: social networking with a medical purpose. .

CONEX from pg 1F

The Conex Med/Pro Systems man-agement team is comprised of PaulUnger,' president and' chief executiveofficer; Rem Fox, vice president andchief operations officer; and BrianErnesto, chief technology officer. Thecompany started late in 2008, withTherapy-Conex debuting lastSeptember.

The team refers to its product as"purpose-driven networking"; duringan interview Fox described it as "priva-tized social networking."

He also stated that, new as the prod-uct is, the client base is growing. Thereis a cost-saving factor with Therapy-Conex: the benefit of a centralized med-ical group and the related conveniencefor patients and their families (particu-larly those in outlying areas) to accessprofessional expertise in one conven-ient location - the Internet.

Many physicians, like Whitney; see.the positives as well.

"There's a lot of cost.problems withoutpatient care. The technology is sav-ing them (medical professionals)money; but allowing them to stay intouch with patients," Fox said.

"Families are on waiting lists to seesome therapists. This allows them toconnect," said Unger, who also com-mented that with various job and othereconomic cutbacks, Therapy-Conexgives an added option to families whocan't afford frequent, in-office visita-tions with expensive specialists.

Because all transactions on Therapy"Conex are stored, the program also

medical-related video on his company's software product, Therapy-Conex.

serves as a medical records site, andeverything is time- and date-stampedfor clear, efficient, secure documenta-tion.

Of significant benefit for parents isthe ability to record a child's behaviorfor a specialist to view.

According to Whitney; parents canshoot a video of their child, upload it toTherapy-Conex and send it to the physi-cian or therapist rather than try to ver-bally explain the behavior during thenext scheduled office visit.

Someone who can best speak to thevalue of that option is Amy Arana, alocal mother of two sons, one withAsperger's syndrome and the otherwith classic autism.

"In the past, we've spent a lot of timewith the development psychologistretelling an event from two weeks earli-er, and then doing our best when we areat the office visit to recreate and mimicthe same behavior, which is not veryeffective," Arana said. "Conex enablesus to capture the behavior or note thesituation right when it happens or soonafter and provide more accurate infor-mation to the psychologist."

Other positives about Therapy-Conex, according to Arana, are: organi-zation of information; ready access;ease of program's use; ability to under-stand specialists' instructions; 24/7availability; diminution of paper docu-ments; and parent and medical team

collaboration."It's put us in the

driver's seat," shesaid. "We're alsobetter able to meetthe needs of ourchildren."

A single family. can sign up to useTherapy-Conex forfree, but there is acharge if more fami-

ly members are added. Professionalspurchase the technology but.can use itas a revenue source, said Fox.

Other uses for Therapy-Conexinclude HIPAA-compliant .telehealthand personal wellness programs andfamily advocacy (experienced profes-sionals explain public education andgovernment programs, including assis-tance with forms, plans and meetings, according to a company news release).

Conex Med/Pro Systems plans tohire up to 20 new employees over thenext year, the release said, and posi-tions include the support and promo-tion of new products and services.

Internet- and smartphone-basedmedical. software will continue to growas innovative minds like those of Unger,Fox and Ernesto - all of whom havesophisticated science and technologybackgrounds - continue to create them.

And since illness and behavioralmaladies won't be eliminated from thespectrum of human experience any-time soon, there will be a ready pool ofend-users.

"We can take telehealth to everyhome," Fox said.

Amy Arana
