Mig Welding

Page 2: Mig welding

Metal inert gas in short knows as MIG welding is an automatic arc welding which involves metal active wire gas welding and involves using shielding

gas and consumable wire electrode through a given range of voltage directly from the power current . This includes use of a current from the

power source that is stable within a given range and varying current flows that is alternating. There are four major basic methods that are used in

MIC welding these include pulsed-spray, spray, globular and circuiting. All of these methods are unique in their own. They are very distinctive in their

different shortcomings that they have as well.

The MIG welding gun has up to 5 major parts, these include the Nozzle output face, the torch handles, the molded phenolic dielectric and the

shielding gas. All this part consists of the welding gun. They play different roles in ensuring that there is a successful gas metal arc welding. The

electric power starts the wire feed while the shielding gas flows to cause sticking of an electric arc. The contact tip is connected to the electricity

source via the power cable which transfers the electrical energy into electrode while keeping it to the point to be welded. The

MIG welding process will always be completed by the flow of electrode without loosing the electrical flow before it enters the contact tip. The wire

flow is protected and flows through the electrode liner.

MIG welding uses the semiautomatic electrode holder that is air cooled; air that is forced into the holder is circulated inside it to maintain the

moderate temperature that is required. In lower current levels it can be used for welling joints. One other tool style used in MIG welding involves

the use of the electrode holder that is semiautomatic water cooled. The main difference being the water used in place of air. Using this kind of tool

style higher current flows are used for welding T or corner joins. The water cooled tool type is an automatic electrode holder that is used mostly

for automatic equipment.

MIG welding utilizes a constant power voltage. If there is a difference in the length of the arc caused by change in electricity voltage supply there

will be a huge difference in the heat supply and the current. Short lengths can be related to greater heat supply which always lead to wire electrode

melting faster therefore maintaining the arc length.

Metals to be melted using the MIG welding process are selected based on the metals to be melted, condition of the surface material and the design of the joint. Mig welding quality is affected by the electrode selections which influence the mechanical qualities of the welding. The mechanical qualities of the material to be welded should be similar to those of the electrode to

achieve a good welding effect. Deoxidized metals are found in most electrodes used in this welding process. Others have dinitriding metals like

titanium used for presenting nitrogen reactions.
