Readings

Who was Ludwig van Beethoven? Recent scholarship challenges our received impression of a flawless and ceaselessly creative dynamo. Beneath the myth we find a human being, mercurial, tempestuous, even duplicitous; a person struggling with romance, business, family, and his own deteriorating hearing. And yet elements of the myth survive scholarly scrutiny. An indefatigable spirit did drive the composer’s pen, inspiring inspiring Appassionata Sonata, Eroica Symphony, the opera Fidelio, and the Ode to Joy. Listening carefully to the music and reflecting on the latest scholarship, we will discover the genuine Beethoven, flawed and nevertheless genius.

InstructorGil Harel, a graduate of the doctoral program at Brandeis, currently teaches at Naugatuck Valley Community College, where he conducts the college chorus and chairs the program in musical theater. As a scholar his research focuses on choral repertoire. He is a sought-after lecturer and seminar leader throughout the Northeast. BOLLI has lost track of how many seminars he’s taught; what we can say is that again and again they are standing room only!are standing room only!
