The County of Strathcona hosted the 2014 55+ Canada Games this August 27 to 30. The 55+ Canada Games, held every other year and hosted by a different community throughout Canada, is a nation-wide program promoting the physical, spiritual and mental wellness of Canadians 55 years of age and older. The Games feature competi- tions in 24 events ranging from Track and Field to Scrabble. The 4 day celebration of sport, culture and social well-being hosted by the County of Strathcona was a resound- ing success, drawing over 2000 competitors and their families to the community, the largest number of participants ever in the history of the Canada 55+ Games. Partici- pants came from twelve provinces and territories – only Newfoundland was not repre- sented. Participants must qualify in their home province or territory to participate in the Canada Games, and Alberta participants qualified during the 2013 Barrhead-Westlock Alberta 55plus games during the summer of 2013. Alberta, being the host province and fielding the largest contingent of participants ever at a Canada Games cleaned up, winning a total of 394 medals. The 35 participants from the Peace Country (members of Zone 8 Alberta 55plus, the Mighty Peace Sport and Recreation Association), brought north 17 gold medals, 12 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals. The County of Strathcona hosted the 2014 55+ Canada Games this August 27 to 30.

The 55+ Canada Games, held every other year and hosted by a different community

throughout Canada, is a nation-wide program promoting the physical, spiritual and

mental wellness of Canadians 55 years of age and older. The Games feature competi-

tions in 24 events ranging from Track and Field to Scrabble. The 4 day celebration of

In the Track and Field event, runners Joe Larsback from

Fairview brought home 5 gold medals while veteran

participant Leo Dawson from Grande Prairie won 2

bronze medals.

Ruby Morrison from Valleyview won a silver medal in

the women’s predicted walk competition, and Karen

Fimrite from Grande Prairie won a gold and a bronze in

field events.

Fairview cyclists Ruth Walkley won 2 gold medals, Fred Walkley won a

bronze medal and Bob Walsh won 2 silver medals, while Barb Hopkin from

Valleyview cycled away with 2 silver medals.

In the pool, Mary Helen Hopkins from Grande Prairie continued her

winning ways by taking away 5 gold medals and Hythe resident Dorothy

Sudnik earned 2 gold medals and 2 bronze medals.

Valleyview residents Juanita Knight won 3 silver medals and Fjola Joelson

won 2 bronze medals.

On the badminton court, the Grande Prairie team of Rajan Thiyagarajan and

Roy Bolton took away the gold.

On the ice, the Grande Prairie Ice Curling team of Betty Sinclair, Velvet Da-

vies, Yolande Rouleau and Verla Bonnet came away with a silver medal and

Grande Prairie hockey player Cam Henning played with the gold

winning Alberta 60+ Wolf Pack team.

At the tables, Kinuso couple Mona and Erwin Sloan won gold in the

Cribbage competition while the High Prairie Contract Bridge team of

Blayne Rubbelke and Don McDonald took silver.

Out on the links, Faust resident George Dashkewytch golfed to a bronze

medal.

The 37 medals Zone 8 brought north is the largest number ever brought back

from the Canada 55+ Games, compared to 21 medals in 2012 and 24 in

2010. Congratulations to all who participated - Totally Awesome!!

The Mighty Peace Sport and Recreation Association held their Annual

General Meeting on Saturday, September 13, 2014 in Valleyview. We

were honoured to have Pat Covington, Alberta 55plus Past President in

attendance, to assist with the elections and awards ceremony. The morn-

ing was spent enjoying some games, the ladies at the Valleyview centre

provided a delicious lunch, and the afternoon was taken up with the

A.G.M.. We want to send special thank-yous to Mary Sutherland for her

two years as President of Zone 8, and Alicemary Olansky for her many

years as our Secretary. We welcome Lea Dashkewytch as our new Presi-

dent, Velvet Davies as our new Secretary, and Cathy Bittman as our new

Publicity Director.

Congratulations go to the Fairview Legion for being awarded the 2014

Appreciation Award and to June Bagan for being awarded the 2014 Merit

Award. We appreciate your support over the years!
