GEORAPHY OF THE PLACE:Milan is the second most populous city in Italy with 1 332 516 inhabitants (“milanesi or Meneghini”) and it is extended for 181,76 km². It is located between 102 and 147 meters above sea level in Lombardia in the Padana

plain. The position of Milan is 45°27′50″N and 9°11′25″E. Milan has nine administrative centres.It is characterized by a semi-continental climate. There is insufficient ventilation and as a consequence a lot of fog and pollution. The winters are colder than the coastal cities. The summers are warm and very humid,quite sultry and stormy.The area has rocks fluvial-glacial origin.Recently it has acquired an economic and productivity role. It is one of the world capital cities of the fashion and of the industrial design and one of the most important education centres.Milan is the 12th most visited cities in the world, the 5th in Europe and the 1st in Italy.

HISTORY:

Probably Milan was founded by the Celts and was born like a small village, that little by time it became bigger. The foundation was in 600 a.C by Belloveso, who settled in the middle of the plain, winning over the Etruscan population.

HOW TO GET THEREArriving by planeFrom Linate AirportBus Number 73 and X73 in the direction of Piazza San Babila last station San Babila and red line underground for Rho - Fiera Milano .From Malpensa AirportMalpensa Express train in direction of Milano Centrale - Milan Porta Garibaldi station, then take the Suburban lines S5 or S6 (duration 13 minutes ) .

Malpensa Express train to Milan Cadorna station ( duration 29 minutes for racing non stop ) and change to red line underground for Rho Fiera Milano .

Most IMPORTANT AIRPORTSThe main airports in Milan are : the international airport of Malpensa , Linate airport and the airport of Bergamo Orio al Serio .AIRPORT OF MALPENSA The airport of Milan-Malpensa is located 48 km north-west of Milan, It is easily reached by train or bus. The airport has two separate terminals: the Terminal 1 is dedicated to all intercontinental flights, international and domestic.

AIRPORT OF LINATE Linate airport is located 7 km from the center of Milan, is easily accessible by taxi, car and busses. The Linate airport is also connected with the airport of Bergamo - Orio through several bus lines .AIRPORT OF BERGAMO ORIO AL SERIO The airport of Bergamo Orio al Serio is located 5 km from Bergamo and about 55 km from Milan. The airport of Orio al Serio is easily accessible by bus or train from all over Lombardy .TOURISMThis is a city of design and new technologies, of art and fashion.It means that Milan is not just about business. You can spend a wonderful time in the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Museo di Storia Naturale (Museum of Natural History).You can also visit Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) or attend musical events at La Scala Theatre. In Milan there are small cinemas in the centre,that offer a wide choice of films.

SCALA THEATRE

Teatro alla Scala, is one of the principal opera houses in the world and the leading in Italy.It was built in 1776–78 by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria .

In 1872 it became the property of the city of Milan. The house was closed during World War I. In 1920 the conductor Arturo Toscanini led a council that raised money to reopen it. The Scala was bombed during World War II and for this reason the theatre reopened in 1946. In late 2001 the

Scala closed for extensive renovations but reopened in December 2004, with a performance of Antonio Salieri. La Scala’s repertory is more varied than that of the other four or five leading opera houses.

FASHIONThis year Milan returned the fashion capital with the fashion week with 68 fashion shows in 6 days. It’s a very important event because there are the most famous people in the world like the new star of Hollywood Alessandra Mastronardi, Alba Rohrwacher, Yvonne Sciò…

And famous Italian stylists and Italian brands like Giorgio Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana…

This year the fashion week was from 25 February to 2 March with the fashion autumn/winter, but there is another fashion week in September/October with the

fashion spring/summer.

MILAN CATHEDRAL

Milan's Duomo is the gothic cathedral of Milan in Italy dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity. The works to build Milan's Duomo started in 1386 for want of the archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo and Gian Galeazzo Visconti that in that period was the master of the city. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is built in marble and it is decorated with 3400 sculptures. It

is the 5th-largest church in the world and the largest in Italy. It is long 150m, large 93m and high 108m. The works of building continued under the supervision of many architects, among wich Leonardo da Vinci. In 1572 San Carlo sanctified again the Duomo.

SFORZESCO CASTLE

The Sforzesco Castle is one of the symbols of Milan and of its history. It was built in XV century from Francesco Sforza, on the remains of one precedent

fortification of XIV century and in the century had a lot of transformations. Now it is an important tourist destination and it is one of the biggest Castles in Europe.

NAVIGLI

The Navigli district of Milan takes its name from the system of waterways connecting Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and the Ticino . The construction took place between the XII and the XIX century, is one of the most characteristic of Milan. The system had defensive objective, but also served to provide the water necessary to the city life. Today there

are only three Navigli: the Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Pavese and Martesana .It was 1492 when Leonardo Da Vinci was commissioned to study the system to authorise navigation from Lake Como to Milan.The district is turning into a fashionable residential area, in fact the Navigli area is characterized by the presence of so many artists, models, musicians and university students thanks to the numerous clubs and restaurants that make this area of Milan a real pole attractive.The Naviglio Grande is the oldest canal in Milan and was built in 1179 with the function to irrigate campaigns Milan .How to get to the canals: the canals are located near Porta Genova, so you can arrive at through the lines 94 and 3.

EXPO 2015 MILAN Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, will host from May 1 to October 31, 2015. The Expo is an event on food and nutrition, involves more than 140 participating countries and international organizations.

The topic of this event is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.The mascot, Foody, embodies the key themes of the event in a way that’s positive, original and powerful.
