now is the time to re-educate our desires so that we can take the really important wealth that God offers us - his love.

It is not so much a question of giving away our possessions as changing our attitude to them and recognising them for what they are: gifts to thank God for, but which are lent to us to use as good stewards.

It has been lovely in lockdown to see people sharing resources, helping others out and giving away things that are no longer needed.

Now that we have been allowed to worship in church again, with limited numbers, we are beginning to re-evaluate the church service schedule across the benefice. We do have services in August, but fewer than the “old normal”. This is another type of ‘clearing out’ or ‘pruning back’ to give more space for God. Please make sure you check the schedule (page 21 this month) for the next few months until we settle upon a regular pattern of services.

“Clearing Out”

It seems to me that during lockdown, people have been busy having a good clear out in their homes. Certainly, there were long queues for the tip when it finally opened, and local Facebook pages were full of items either for sale or free to the first taker.

Every day we are told by the advertisers that we need this or that to be a fulfilled and happy person. Do you remember the children’s TV programme, Crackerjack? I’m afraid you’ll have to be over 50. One of the highlights was the quiz feature Double or Drop; if the child contestants got an answer right they got a prize, but they were handed a cabbage for a wrong answer. The catch was that they had to put their arms out and carry everything that they were given. Often the contestant got so loaded up that you couldn’t see their face behind all the stuff. Occasionally they would drop everything and lose it all.

For some of us in the West we live in a society that accumulates so much stuff that we then need Marie Kondo to come and help us sort it out and get rid of it. The KonMari method is a system of simplifying and organizing your home by getting rid of physical items that do not bring joy into your life.

The lockdown has given some of us a chance to re-evaluate our lives and the things that are most important to us - friends, family and love. Material things, no matter how fun and comforting, lovely and useful they may be, will never completely satisfy our deepest longings.

Wealth is not a bad thing, but when it turns into greed and possesses us, then it becomes dangerous, because we begin to believe that we are all right on our own and we no longer have any need for God. Perhaps

It is very rare for us to include obituaries in the magazine, but Milborne Port’s oldest lifelong resident has recently passed away at the age of 104. Her funeral was on 30th July.

Mrs Lily Isabella Durrant 16th Jan 1916 – 19th July 2020

Lily Dewfall was born in Milborne Port, the eldest of seven children. She saw two world wars, the Spanish Flu and the coronavirus pandemic. She married in 1940; her husband, Arthur, was in the services at the time, but in peacetime they both worked in the gloving factory in Milborne Port. They had one son, Chris. Lily and Arthur loved socialising and dancing in the village venues, and Lily never lost her love of an occasion even after Arthur passed away in 1991. She was always smartly dressed and had a wide circle of friends. Lily fulfilled many engagements and press calls as her age advanced, opening the village fete, being serenaded by the Primary School Choir

on both her 100th and 101st birthdays, and celebrating at the Luncheon Club. Lily remained very active until her health began to decline twelve months ago

Chris and his wife Wendy would like to give very special thanks to family, friends, neighbours, Milborne Port Surgery, Pharmacy and carers, for all the kind caring attention over many years. Also many thanks to the Tuesday Luncheon Club team where Lily enjoyed many lunchtimes and outings. They do a tremendous job for the older generation in the village, providing delicious meals and transport to and from Church House.

St John’s Church Summer Draw Every July, St John’s Church in Milborne Port has held a summer fete. This is our main fundraising event of the year. The current restrictions mean that we cannot run a fete this year in the usual way, and due to the lockdown we have had very little income to meet the upkeep of church. However, we can run a summer draw which will be held on

Sunday 30th August at 4 p.m.

Tickets will be on sale from the beginning of August. There are only a few weeks to get your tickets. Please do not miss out, and please help us by selling as many tickets as you can.

Prizes to include

Tea for Four at the House of Lords £150 cash

Gift Tokens from various businesses Bottles and many more

Congratulations to Alan Elliott, who took this month’s cover photo in Lower Kingsbury. Please do keep sending photographs of scenery in and around Milborne Port for consideration for future covers. High-resolution photos in landscape format please, to [email protected]

News from the Bell Tower

On my daily walks around the village over the last four months, and the various chats that I’ve had along the way, many people have said how much they have missed the sound of our church bells at St John’s – either on a Wednesday evening, or Sunday morning.

Whilst the Church of England is in favour of the resumption of bells being rung in churches now that the buildings have reopened, the decision has been made here that we will not be resuming ringing at the present time. The guidelines for all bell-ringers, which have been drawn up in accordance with PHE good practice, include the following stipulations: ringing should be restricted to 15 minutes per session and then only for a church service (i.e. no ‘recreational’ ringing); the least risk will be if bells are rung that are more than 2 metres apart (in our case, alternate bells, therefore four bells only can be rung); an individual ringer should only touch one bell rope per session, and only the number of ringers required to ring should be permitted in the ringing chamber (i.e. four in our case); the ringing room should be well-ventilated (whilst we are fortunate here to have a large space, it is by no means well-ventilated). And of course there should be the liberal use of hand sanitisers and the disinfecting of surfaces that have been touched.

Added to the above, the majority of our band are over 50 years of age, with five ringers in their seventies and three in their eighties, so technically in the ‘high-risk’ category as far as age is concerned. The guidelines emphasise that no-one should feel pressurised into returning to ringing because of health concerns, or if an individual feels particularly risk-averse.

Therefore, taking all the above into account, the decision has been made that we will resume ringing once it is considered safer to do so, and we are able to truly make a joyful sound. Many of us feel extremely sad about this as the ringing of church bells has always been such a big part of our lives, and for some of us this has been over forty, fifty or even sixty years.

Some of us meet on a Friday evening for a Zoom chat, and many of us have met in one another’s gardens for socially distanced tea and cake. But, as everyone reading this will appreciate, it’s just not the same as meeting together.

Susan Wales Tower Captain

Thanks for the Grove Garden Volunteers

I would like to thank all the volunteers who work to make the Grove Garden such a lovely place to be in. During the Lockdown, I have been able to take my exercise by walking to the Garden (with a walking frame) via the footpaths surrounding my home. It has been a great joy to watch progress; the ferns gradually uncurling themselves over weeks in the long shady border though March and April, then the sun shining through the blue of the iris and wisteria, and lately, the mauve buddleia blossom appearing – covered in bees!

One late afternoon this week I sat in the lowering sunlight, while swifts circled high above shrieking their chorus of piercing song, and gave thanks for the dedication and imagination of all those who have made the Garden what it is this year.

News from the Parish Council Community Allotment Day at Gainsborough Before lockdown we were thinking about having a special day at the allotments when allotment holders can get together (social distancing rules applying, of course!) to exchange produce, seeds, experiences and advice! We have decided to go ahead with this plan on Saturday 5th September from 11am. We would also like to invite allotment holders to sell their produce, seeds and home-made cakes to members of the public in order to raise money for two chosen charities: The Spirit of Milborne Port and Sherborne Viral Kindness. We are also planning to rent a skip for the weekend so that tenants can throw out any unwanted 'stuff' after a good old clear up/sort out. So, please put the date in your diaries as everyone is welcome to come along. If you have never been to the allotments, it would be a good chance to come and see how 'productive' and interesting it is up there! More information will be published via our Facebook group (Milborne Port Allotments) and in notices at the site nearer the time. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Milborne Port in Bloom I am pleased to report the Waitrose green disc scheme amount is £333. This month would normally be judging for the SW Bloom, such a shame it has been cancelled this year because of Covid. But thank you to all our volunteers who keep the village looking colourful and tidy. The hanging baskets are now in place on the high street a little bit later than usual. Enjoy the summer and stay safe everyone. Karen Gough

Reflections on Village Achievements

This village has always had a good community spirit. There have been plenty of initiatives going on and clubs and groups forming and developing to involve the young, the elderly, the least and most active and finding something for everybody to enjoy. Many initiatives have been launched over the years. The Spirit of Milborne Port sponsored the first hanging baskets and the Entrance Stone at Crackmore. They also suggested our first entry into the Village In Bloom Competition, which has gone from strength to strength winning 1 silver, 4 silver gilt, and 2 gold in the Cox Cup.

The WI organised the refurbishment of the Crackmore bus shelter with the help of pupils and staff from The Gryphon School and Milborne Port Primary. The Serco cup for community work in the SW was won in 2017.The W I planted a tree and put a new planter on the Weighbridge, improved the area in front of the Town Hall and sponsored a mosaic outside Something Else Fishy.

Volunteers keep the Ball Court, the Grove Garden, The Cemetery, Crackmore bus shelter and the Churchyard in excellent order to give pleasure to many. Some of the activities have raised no publicity, some have raised plenty and some have just evolved. Whatever, they have always been of benefit to all, whether a local or a newcomer.

Our thanks to all those who try to make this a good village in which to live. It is hoped that we can continue this good community involvement.

We had our first committee meeting since Lockdown early in July. It was in the open air and we were all socially distanced, of course. It was good to see people again, the downside was we had to shout to make ourselves heard at times, especially above the noise of the traffic. We couldn't discuss past meetings and

activities as obviously none had taken place and we couldn't make any firm plans for the future as that is still unknown! However, we decided we would have small socially-distanced outdoor get-togethers so members didn't feel too isolated or forgotten. They will take place in August in members' gardens. We have been split into small groups so if you hear ladies chatting and laughing in a garden near you, it may well be the WI. Obviously, we are relying on the weather to be kind to us, but we have had quite a good spring and summer so far.

Jan, our President, has kept us entertained with her monthly Newsletter, and the Federation has been running various classes and talks on Zoom in which some of our members have taken part and enjoyed.

Here's hoping that we are able to resume our regular monthly meetings, coffee mornings etc. at some time in the not too distant future.

Remembering

Naomi Thorp’s research and commemoration of the Milborne Port servicemen who fell in the First World War was much appreciated. Following the 75th Anniversary of VE Day this year, we have decided to commemorate each of the 19 Milborne Port men who died in service during the Second World War, on the 80th anniversary of his death. This will therefore be an occasional series, reflecting the wartime losses in real time but 80 years on. Our thanks to Naomi for her work on this.

Ronald Greenstock died August 1940

Ronald Leslie Greenstock was a driver with the RASC. He died after a short illness, aged 24 years, at Abingdon Hospital on 17th August 1940 and is buried in Milborne Port Cemetery. His parents, Edward & Annie Greenstock, lived in Paddock Walk, and Ronald was the youngest of their nine children. Annie, never having recovered from the loss of her youngest child, died just a year later.

Lockdown Thoughts on Class and the Church

Last month I threatened some thoughts on class as a social matter. It is closely related to racism, I think, and largely a matter of culture and important to recognise in our mission and ministry. As human beings we tend to associate with people like ourselves. That usually means that we have similar interests, or worries, and use similar language. As church we are used to the standard English of our liturgy. It does change but usually avoids the latest up-to-date terms and idiosyncrasies which come and go.

As individuals, different things in life are important to us. Aspirations are different, and largely driven by family tradition and economic necessity. Often we fall into groups defined by the size of our pockets and the resulting location of our homes. Opportunities in education will differ. In some parts of the country an early sort out sends some children one way and some another according to how they have performed in tests. Where you were born may affect the way you speak. Maureen teases me when I have been to a family funeral and I return home with a thick layer of Buckinghamshire in my words.

Much has changed since the Second World War and opportunities in education and career are much more equitable than they were, though not entirely. When I was a child at primary school it was possible to be born the wrong side of the tracks and the school took more bother over some than others. Generally, if you came from the social housing you would not pass the 11+. All that has gone, but much remains to mark out who we are, and we do tend to value the accent, the choice of words and the job.

A church congregation is a group of people which usually reflects the characteristics of the local population. People come together with their shared interests or history or aspirations. People who do not have the same ones can find it difficult or impossible to join. As we may judge people by race, we also may do by culture and accent and lifestyle. Church doors are wide open to everyone, but many see a ‘different’ type of person inside and are hesitant to cross the threshold. I have no solution to offer but it is something we have to have in mind as we choose the ways we offer the good news of Jesus Christ to the world.

Milborne Port Climate and Nature Action

Climate change is an emergency which demands an emergency response - from each of us

The climate is changing at an unprecedented rate because of the impact of human activity on Earth - 170 times faster than it has changed with natural forces alone. The world has certainly been hotter before now but this exceptionally rapid change is dangerous because we depend on the natural world which we take too much for granted for the air we breathe, clean water, suitable conditions

for growing the food we eat, pollination of most of our foods as well as the plants that underpin the ecosystems that support us, for many raw materials, for the breakdown and recycling of all organic waste matter, flood alleviation and so on. For our lives. The effect of our so-called greenhouse gas emissions on global temperatures and sea level rise (mainly from carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels and methane from land use changes and animal agriculture)will be dramatic. We can expect global temperatures to become 2-30C warmer than pre-industrial temperatures and the sea level to rise 15-24 metres higher from our emissions so far, based on the scientific evidence of conditions the last time the atmospheric carbon dioxide was this high. Global temperature rises now calculated retrospectively as an average over the previous 30-year period stand at a little over 10C with dangerous years already anticipated. It is important to recognize that if we wait until things are intolerable for us, by that time the actions that could have stopped it early on will have become insufficient. The window of opportunity is closing fast.

In the words of the UN Secretary General, we need not only climate

action but also climate justice. Political leaders must raise their ambition, businesses must raise their sights and people everywhere must raise their voices. There is a better way, and we must take it. Unprecedented sums of taxpayers’ money are being spent on the economic recovery from Covid-19. How this money is spent will be a “make-or-break moment” for the health of our planet. We have a narrow window, but vast opportunity, to rebuild a cleaner, fairer and safer world.

Each one of us has more impact than we realize. If we carry on regardless it sends a signal to our friends and family that everything is fine. It’s not. If we make a stand and calculate and take responsibility for our own emissions, it sends out ripples that action is needed. Check your own carbon footprint at www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx

Homes for trees needed! There is money for 200 or so trees to help provide food (hazelnuts), shade and shelter from heatwaves in our gardens and public spaces within the village, as well as food, shelter and homes for wildlife. Please get in touch by the end of August. We also hope to muster enough volunteers to plant a decent length of wildlife-friendly hedge somewhere in the village safe from stock and next to or near a footpath. We’d love to hear from you if you have suitable land. We would like to raise funds to purchase land for a community orchard and wildlife area within or close to the village if anyone has an acre or two available please?

Sixty Years Ago John House explains how life suddenly changed for him and his wife Wendy, giving them an important role in Milborne Port life. Tuesday August 2nd 1960: Sadly, there was an accident in the narrow part of Sherborne Road when Tommy Green, manager and mechanic at Crackmore Garage was killed whilst cycling back to work after his lunch break. I was contacted at the garage where I worked at Leigh to come to Milborne Port and carry on the job Tommy was doing before lunch. I carried on working at Crackmore; Wendy and myself married the following May and moved to Milborne Port. ( We bought a house from the Medlycott estate for £950. )

In1963 John Knight, the owner of the garage, offered to sell the business to me. With the help of BP and others ( I couldn't afford even a tanker load of petrol at 2/1d per gallon. ) we became owners of the Crackmore Garage on June 1st 1963.

This meant giving up playing football etc. and a part time job

of teaching Auto-mobile Engineering at Yeovil College in order to work the 12 hour days the garage stayed open plus Sunday mornings. In the early years during the holiday season we would stay open all night on Fridays, Milborne Port British Legion volunteers erected a shelter under the trees to serve Tea & Coffee and sell Tom Coombes cakes etc. for Legion funds. Staff such as Mick Roberts and Tony Davis also took their turns working through the night; no self-service in those days.

Over the years we dealt with the change to decimal currency; the imposition of V.A.T.; bought and sold petrol in Litres not Gallons and changed to self service; plus we demolished the old garage ( previously the Polo Hut at Castle Farm Sherborne ) built new workshops and shop, and installed larger petrol tanks. In 1997 we sold the business to Hunts Food Service and for the first time in my working life I did not have to work on Saturday mornings. I then got persuaded by Dr Harriet to take on the Chairman's job at the Village Hall, for 19 years, and I also volunteered to cut the Church grass, relinquished 20 years later for health reasons. Wendy was a Parish Councillor for 36 years, a founder member of the Young Wives group and a keen member of the Garden Club. We're not Milbornians but we have been here, by accident, for 60 years.

Friends of Milborne Port Library

The Friends are pleased to announce that the Jolly Book Bus plans to re-open on Tuesday 18 August. An ‘order and collect’ service will be in operation which is still being organised. . Customers are encouraged to read the signage outside the Bus to see how this will work. Library customers will come to the bottom of the steps and talk to library staff about their requirements. The customer will then be asked to step back 2 metres and the library staff will put the book/s on a table outside the bus. Returned books will also be left on this table. If the weather is bad the table will be put just inside the bus. The customer will then be invited to collect their books while the library staff withdraws a safe distance. Returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours.

Exact opening times are still being decided.

Reading Group Reviews

While the Lockdown has continued, the Reading Group has met via ZOOM in July, to discuss books they have been reading. Here are a few of them.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold, by Toshikazu Kawaguchi In a tiny coffee shop in Tokyo, it’s possible to travel backwards or forwards in time provided the customer sits in a particular seat, and returns before their cup of coffee gets cold; four characters do that for very distinct reasons and resolve matters that have been troubling them for years. E. E.

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout Olive is the original difficult woman, getting on and increasingly curmudgeonly – but we warm to the mix of disapproval and love she shows for her neighbours, her own vulnerability showing through her sometimes harsh manner, touching something deep and true in us, we laugh and cry with her. D. A. Robot Wars #1: Death Trap, by Sigmund Brouwer. An ordinary family on Mars saves their colony through God’s grace rather than choosing who lives or dies. C. D. Aria by Nazanine Hozar Abandoned as a baby in 1950s Tehran, Aria grows up in the midst of unrest and revolution. A compelling book describing life in the two halves of Tehran, and how the creation of an Islamic republic under Khomeini changed life for women. I was also gripped by the more personal story of Aria and her relationships with the three women that appear as mother figures in her life. A. U.

The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt The novel is a coming of age tale told in the first person. The protagonist, 13 year old Theodore Decker, survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum where his mother is killed. While staggering through the debris, he takes with him a small Dutch Golden Age painting called The Goldfinch. E. S. Lost Children Archive, by Valeria Luiselli.

A couple traveling with his 10 yr. old son and her 5 yr. old daughter, cross vast stretches of America - Father in search of Apacheria, once home to the Apaches, but Mother in search of the Lost Children, separated from their families by the USA border policies – on what turns out to be the last trip they will ever take together.
