Taroom ShowThe community and committee members alike are still smiling after a highly successful Taroom Show on May 5 and 6. An impressive number of competitors and exhibitors enjoyed immaculate grounds, as did businesses with trade displays and stalls.

This year, the pavilion introduced a new feature class, titled ‘Something beginning with T’. It was an open class to encourage more entries and participants, and it was well received with over 30 nominations. The winners were Carol Swift with her quilt ‘My home town, Taroom’ and Lisa Adcock’s Taroom Bowls Club cake.

The men’s chocolate cake competition was hotly contested at the show, and five of the dozen masterpieces were auctioned off to raise $486 for the local Palliative Care. Harry Johnson from the Taroom Post Office won the section, while Taroom Show Society vice president, Don Lethbridge, was a close second. Both cakes topped the auction at $130 each.

Thanks to a number of generous sponsors, the stud cattle section offered over $7600 in prize money and trophies; the prime and store cattle section had over $2500 up for grabs, while the horse ring put up just over $9000.

President Shane Williams said the show was a great success. “It’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves,” Mr Williams said. “We were proud to offer a variety of things to do and see, including the international Lumberjack Show, cooking demonstrations by Fiona Flanders, the Santos Ladies’ marquee, a wine and cheese afternoon, a fashion parade, the Taroom Vet Surgery pet parade, just to name a few.”

“There was such a positive vibe everywhere you walked around the grounds. It’s such a professionally run show for a small town with limited volunteers.”

Two of those volunteers were recognised for their hard work. Malcolm and Ann McIntyre were awarded Life Membership, and Mr Williams said they were worthy recipients having made such a valuable contribution to the show for over 30 years.

Dulacca Sports Club hosted its second Annual ANZAC Cricket Day on Friday 25th April. This fabulous day of family fun was well supported, and a crowd of approximately 200 players, families and cricket spectators gathered from near and far for this social day of cricket.

Eight teams of six a side played, and the Hungry Bulls won. Participating teams were Condamine Red Hot Fairymeadow Flyers, Wallumbilla's Bush Turkeys, Roma's Hungry Bulls, Dulacca's Big Whackers, Dulacca's Scrubbers, Dulacca's Big Ring Ball Burners, Jackson's Triple Bs, and Dulacca's Fine Legs.

Many teams dressed up and got into the spirit of the day, and Jamie Sturrock provided an hilarious running commentary for the amusement of the crowd and players.

Out & About

Biggest Morning Tea at MilesThe ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ was held this year in the beautiful gardens of ‘Sunnyview’, the home of Kylie and Steve Bourne. Under a living canopy of shady trees, on cool green lawns, delicious food and drinks were freely available to those who attended. All proceeds went, as in previous years, to cancer research.

Ladies far outnumbered gentlemen and those few brave males who attended may possibly have felt the same as one gentleman who confided that he felt a little vulnerable – ‘wasn’t that what you said, Terry?’ I made the suggestion to his wife, Mrs Smith (woops! that let the cat out of the bag) that she kept an eye on him in case he panicked and bolted! He didn’t, of course, so she obviously did a good job!

There was great interest in a mind boggling array of donated prizes and there was a busy gardening stall selling some magnificent and very healthy, donated plants. Donated, home grown vegetables were also on offer.

Joan Brownlie was in attendance and enjoys the distinction of being not only the organizer of the very first ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ in the Miles area, but of hosting it every year for nine years - a magnificent effort!

As with so many local functions, Kylie did an excellent job as Hostess. Friends caught up with one another in a very convivial atmosphere and the morning was no doubt a resounding success.

Noonga NotesNoonga TennisThe Noonga Tennis fixtures commenced on Sunday, 27th April and will continue fortnightly to the 17th August (Weather permitting). Four teams of 8 players enjoy 5 sets of tennis (3 doubles and 2 mixed) for the day. On the 25th May, the tennis club will be hosting Noonga’s ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ with all the proceeds for the day going towards raising funds for cancer research. If you are interested in filling in for a day’s tennis, please contact Mary Leahy.

The Hindman Family get activeIn the ‘Easter in the Country’ Triathlon held on Easter Sunday, 20 April, Tone participated in the Business House challenge. Out of 11 businesses, including the very young, fit and healthy teams of Vital Health, Snap Fitness and a team of all young men - “Six Mile Studs”, Tone’s team called the “Turtles” came 4th. The triathlon consisted of a 300m swim (Tony), 7km cycle, (Richard Johnson) and a 2km run (Pat Hanly). A very exciting event and a fantastic result for the Turtles, not to mention surprising, since there was no training involved!

Seb and Monty participated in the Yuleba Fun Run for Help Kids Like Nick on Saturday, 26 April.

Both ran in the 5km open and exceeded all expectations, especially those of their parents. Seb ran in 8th and Monty came in 15th in the male category, much to the chargrin of some older relatives.

Meridy Kadel cuts off her pony tail in order to help cancer sufferersMeridy wrote: I’m lucky enough to say that I was not motivated to have the chop because a close friend or family member suffers from a terrible disease, the symptoms or treatment for which cause hair loss. It’s simply easier to care for shorter hair in winter, and why let all that excess go to waste? A quick Google search led me to Pantene Beautiful Lengths - a ponytail collection program being conducted across Australia and New Zealand. Pantene have teamed up with the Look Good....Feel

Better community service program with a view to producing real hair wigs for women undergoing cancer treatment. A quick check of the donation criteria and a phone call to Polly Leahy to set up a time and I was as good as bangtailed. At the time of writing, Pantene advertise the receipt of 11,045 ponytails; that’s around 1,400 wigs for worthy recipients. I hope that my donation can provide a measure of support to an Australian woman suffering from cancer by helping her look good and feel better. Check out the web site www.beautifullengths.com.au

We started the weekend off with a minutes silence to honour Graeme Acton, whom many at the Draft admired greatly. The event was a little bit busier than usual with an extra day of drafting on the Friday which was a huge success.

Once again the Friday night kebabs were a hit with the committee ladies making over 500 and not one left in the canteen at nights end.

Saturday night an auction was held at the bar to raise money for the Simmonds Family Appeal, eight stallion service fees and two young geldings were auctioned. Thanks to the extreme generosity of the stallion owners and others, $16,500 was raised for the Simmonds Family.

Once again the Meandarra State School P&C ladies didn’t disappoint, putting on a delicious dinner which everyone raved about. I can’t forget to mention the fantastic effort the Glenmorgan Kindy did in keeping the drinks flowing all night on Saturday night, it was a fun night had by all.

The drafting was fast and furious, and thankfully safe, as Wilsons First Aid Services supported by QGC, wasn’t needed all weekend. I’d like to thank the committee for their tireless efforts all weekend from the back yards to the canteen to the Secretaries box, all efforts are voluntary and a lot of times go unrecognised but are always greatly appreciated.

The weekend could not and would not run without our valued sponsors, a massive thank you to all our valued sponsors. I would like to give a special thank you to our last minute sponsors; QGC and Origin, for their valuable contribution.

Upcoming Events

Beef Bells and Bottle Tree Festival Starts to Take ShapePlanning is well underway for the biennial festival, which aims to showcase Miles and surrounding Districts. A new committee has been formed with Rachel Kerwick being voted in as President. Gayle Guymer is Secretary and Jenni Cole is Treasurer, with other members of the committee including Kerry Mulholland, Kylie Bourne, Josie Wise, Kathleen Moffatt, Karen Williams, Rhea Connelly and Amy Bevan.

The festival will run for 11 days commencing Thursday, 4th September with the opening of the photography competition and wine and cheese evening. Special guest Judge will be Mr Scott Bridle who will also be available for book signing on the night. There will a celebration race day with a six race program, family entertainment, gourmet market stalls, roving entertainment, live band and fireworks on Saturday 6th September. Sponsorship opportunities are now open for this event.

A number of events will be held throughout the week including the very popular Ladies’ High Tea, Aussie Trivia Night and a Beef Bonanza, all culminating with the Street Parade (along Edith Street) and Anniversary Day at the Historical

Village on Saturday, 14th September 2014. We are lucky to have Mr Warren Fahey, a well known Cultural Historian who will be with us over four days, visiting our schools and entertaining us at some of our iconic events. The theme for the Window Competition and Street Parade will be “HORSE POWER”. This theme was chosen for a number of reasons, including the fact that it has been 100 years since the start of World War One and horses played an important role in that war; 2014 is also the Chinese Year of the Horse. We have the races and also our machinery enthusiasts can show off the Horse Power of their Engines as well as the general love of horses by many and its ability is a real power in itself, so the scope of the theme is wide and varied. On the Saturday morning there will activities in the street to keep the kids entertained while waiting for the Parade, and Mum and Dad can have a coffee and pick up a bargain at the sidewalk specials.

Tours to include a tag-along Wildflower Tour, Origin of Gas – Energy Tour, Mrs Jean Austin will have her Doll Collection on display and an open day at Possum Park on Sunday, 7th September; so bring along Dad for a picnic afternoon and a look around at this nostalgia and unique place

right on our doorstep.

An Ecumenical Service is planned for Sunday 7th in ANZAC Park to join together as a community and give thanks for the wonderful people and community in which we live, work and play.

The committee encourages all members of the community to be involved and if they have an event or idea that they would like to share, we welcome them to contact us. We will be looking for volunteers, market stallholders, parade entries and sponsorship, in particular we would love to tap into the cultures and talents of the new members of the community. We aim to have a festival where the locals can celebrate their diversity and visitors can enjoy our wonderful hospitality and surroundings as well as all the great things our district has to offer.

Look out for our regular updates on the great events we plan to bring you in September, and head over to our website also at www.beefbellsandbottletreefestival.com

Condamine Launches Flood Marker & Revitalised Pioneer ParkAfter almost a year of planning and preparation the Condamine Flood Marker was officially launched on Saturday 26 April alongside the reopening of the Pioneer Park, which was redeveloped following the 2010/11 summer floods.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development and Health Services Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the flood marker will be a reminder to current and future generations of the impact of past floods endured by the Condamine community.

"This flood marker, along with those recently launched in Chinchilla, will provide a lasting legacy for our communities who have endured many historic flood events over the years," she said.

"The Condamine Flood Marker captures flood levels, historic images and information to depict the stories and contributions of the community before and after flood disaster events since 1942.

"The Condamine community have played a key role in bringing this flood marker to life. This has been a year-long project and has delivered an outstanding result that the Condamine community can be proud of."

Cr Tillman said it was poignant to launch the flood marker in conjunction with the reopening of Pioneer Park.

"The Pioneer Park needed to be redeveloped following devastation caused by the 2010/11 summer floods, so the revitalised Park will itself be a testament to the resilience of the Condamine community and the strength with which they have recovered from the devastation of past floods.

"With the Park now hosting both the flood marker and an historic flood boat, it's hoped the park can be a place of both fun and reflection for residents, families and visitors to the area," she said.

Council Spokesperson for Works and Engineering Services Councillor Andrew Smith joined the Condamine community to officially launch the flood marker and revitalised Pioneer Park.

"It was a pleasure to be involved in officially launching the Condamine Flood Marker and it's great to finally see Pioneer Park open again for the community to enjoy. I thank all those who came along on the day to help mark the occasion," he said.

The Flood Marker project was funded through the State Government Community Recovery and Wellbeing Package and the Western Downs Regional Arts Development Fund.

The redevelopment of Pioneer Park was jointly funded by RACQ, Xstrata Coal, Western Downs Regional Council and McKinlay Shire Council.

Antarctic Fly-Cruise Trip In August of 2012 on The Luminous Landscape website a notice was posted for expressions of interest in a photographic expedition to Antarctica in January 2014.

I fortunately responded immediately as the expedition sold out within three weeks.

The expedition started in Santiago Chile where I met up with Michael Reichmann and the other three Luminous Landscape photographic instructors as well as the other 53 participants who represented many countries and many different professions

We then flew as a group to Punta Arenas at the southern end of Chile and from there flew to the Frei Research Station on King George Island in the South Shetland Group, and then walked about one kilometre to the beach to be transferred to the Ocean Nova by zodiac.

Then began five glorious days living on a very comfortable ship with excellent food and drink (Chilean beer and wine are excellent) and up to four zodiac excursions a day.

The zodiac excursions included landing at penguin colonies, research stations, historical sites, abandoned whaling stations and cruising amongst stranded icebergs.

Our days started at 4.00am and finished around 10.30pm.

We were very fortunate to get five fine days in a row, the average is about two out of five. This did cut out a lot of the instructional and seminar time, which was planned for the days when the weather turned bad, but nobody minded.

Arriving home I had the enviable task of working through over 4000 images (which is still a work in

process). One of the German photographers took over 20,000 images!!!!!!

I hope you enjoy the images I have included as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Photography, particularly printmaking, has always been a major part of my life.

Until I moved to Toowoomba from Dalby in 2001 (I still have my chiropractic practices in Dalby and Oakey) I had my own darkroom and worked mainly in monochrome prints and colour slides.

Since moving to Toowoomba I have completely moved from film to digital image making, and despite some trepidation at first I now have no regrets. In fact I can now get better control over the final output of the print with the current digital process and the wonderful inks and beautiful papers now available.

Why the Bunya Mountains in Winter Should be on Your Bucket List? Its rainforest-clad peaks shelter the largest stand of ancient bunya pines in the world. The Bunya Mountains offer cool mountains, rainforests and waterfalls, unique range-top grasslands, panoramic views, colourful birdlife and enthralling stories of times long ago. The Bunya Mountains are a spectacular wilderness range forming an isolated section of the Great Dividing Range situated about 150km from the coast and lying almost centrally between Kingaroy and Dalby.

Sue Unwin, Managing Director of the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre has lived and worked in the Bunya Mountains for more than 30 years she explains that winter at Bunya Mountains is just magic! Sue answers some questions below.

So what is it you love about winter in the Bunya Mountains?

Where do I start… the scenery, the wildlife, being immersed in nature, the bunya pines, the cold morning frost, seeing your breath condense in puffs when you talk, log fires and the delicious hot chocolate from Poppies On the Hill Cafe... there are so many things. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and our history is so interesting.

Aboriginal people historically used Bunya

Mountains as a meeting place for the various tribes scattered throughout Queensland and New South Wales. They feasted seasonally on the bunya nuts collected from the bunya pine trees (Araucaria bidwillii).

Early Europeans used bullock and horse teams to harvest the red cedar and other precious rainforest timbers. The chutes used to roll the logs down to the bottom of the mountain can still be seen today.

Why do you think people should put it on their winter holiday bucket list?

If people love nature and wildlife, if they love the mountains, bushwalking or just doing nothing at all with some friends, then Bunya Mountains is a must. Visiting the Bunya Mountains in winter is cold. Our temperatures range from zero to twenty degrees. We actually get snow approximately every 10 years. The chalets are cozy though, with log fires and electric blankets. The winter scenery really is breathtaking, so much so it is hard to put into words.

What do you think is Bunya Mountains best kept secret for South East Queensland locals?

Some of our regular visitors have been renting our

holiday homes for 20 years or more. We always welcome first time Bunya visitors with open arms. I see it every winter, new visitors are amazed at the beauty and blissful serenity of the mountain. It is good for us locals to revisit our mountain through the eyes of a first comer. Feedback like amazing, uplifting energy, stunning beauty, peace & tranquillity are very common comments.

Most people know of the Bunya Mountains bushwalks, but the cycling trails are amazing! If you are looking for a real fitness challenge try pitting your legs against the climbs of the Bunyas! There’s a good reason the Tour of Toowoomba’s mountain stage finishes at the top of the Bunya Mountains, it’s one of the most challenging climbs in the region.

Poppies on the Hill Café offers a hearty lunch which is soul satisfying on a chilly winter day. We have the largest range of accommodation options on the mountains and encourage everyone to look at our new website www.bunyamountains.com.au. Bunya Mountain is amazing and unique – especially in winter!! Come and visit us as soon as you can so you can experience Bunya magic first hand. I promise, your Bunya experience will stay with you forever.

Modern Weaning Strategies – How Much Has Changed?Good cattlemen know the benefits of looking after young stock. Calves that are well grown and properly weaned show excellent health and vigour. In that respect, not much has changed in the last 100 years. Good cattlemen still have good cattle.

Research gives the benefit of confirming that we are doing the right thing. So what has science proven, that good cattlemen already know?

1. Feed the cow for a healthy weaner: Cow milk yield is the chief determinant of weaner weight. Good milk production not only requires energy and balanced protein, but supplemental vitamins and minerals are absolutely essential. Anipro consistently adds about 40kg to a weaner off supplemented cows.

2. Concentrate on udder health: There is renewed interest in mastitis reducing beef cow milk yield. Studies prove that nutritional supplementation reduces mastitis. That’s one reason why well fed cows have healthier calves. Only Anipro constantly delivers the correct amount and balance of trace nutrients in a palatable package.

3. Yard or Paddock Weaning: Beef CRC studies show that yard weaned cattle out-perform paddock weaned; mainly due to a reduction in stress. By supplying a familiar supplement in the yard, performance is also boosted. Studies show that liquid supplements are more effective at delivering nutrition to young stock, when compared to dry feeds.

Graziers have been using Anipro liquid

supplement as a principle weaning tool for 20 years. Anipro provides all of the nutrients essential for cow health and milk production, and is safe for young stock at weaning. Anipro consistently returns a 3:1 return on investment for a weaning program when direct costs and returns are considered. Add in the other benefits of improved fertility, heavier weaning weights and less-tail on the weaner mob and any good cattleman will tell you, Anipro is a sensible and economic management tool for weaning.

Cake Decorating Classes – Practise Makes Perfect! In 2009 when Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace opened Merivale Cakes and Crafts at Highfields, the super hype surrounding the current cake decorating revolution was just starting. In the 5 years since they began teaching their Sugarcraft range at their Highfields cake studio they have introduced over 50 different classes, presented up to 70 certificates each year and have taught over 200 students (with some travelling from as far as Emerald, Roma and Townsville.

Merivale’s training portfolio ranges from beginner, intermediate to advanced, with some custom-designed classes (to suit the individual skills needed) and user choice (where students can choose the mix of skills that they wish to advance). Delivery options include day, evening, week day and weekend classes and small class sizes which allows for maximum attention for students.

In August and November 2014 Merivale will run beginner classes in Chinchilla. With many western Queensland students travelling to Highfields for classes, Merivale has decided to run two trial workshops in Chinchilla to see if there is a market for further classes in rural communities.

However Merivale do a lot more than create amazing cakes for clients and run a school. They are also very active in using their craft to support the community. On an annual basis, they run demonstrations for schools and community groups, creates cakes for charities, provide sponsorships for the Brisbane Ekka, Toowoomba and Goombungee Shows, and conduct community workshops at the annual Cobb & Co Museum Have-A-Go festival and the Highfields Cultural Centre. Recently Mary negotiated an agreement with three rural shows to provide sponsors and judging until 2016.

Merivale conduct a range of business development classes and mentors a group of advanced students who are almost ready to open new business ventures of their own. To accelerate the skilling for these students Merivale organises workshops (in Highfields and Melbourne) with some Australian and world class Sugarcraft specialists and authors to teach at their Highfields studio.

The success of Merivale’s Sugarcraft classes can be measured by their students’ results from the regional and Royal shows and the international expo competitions and tours that they organise. During the 2014 Toowoomba and Goombungee shows students achieved over 30 awards; and at the UK 2012 and 2013 international cake decorating competitions students won a combined 9 awards. These are amazing results particularly as the competition pieces were transported safely half way across the globe and in light of the high standard of entries, against very experienced decorators.

These achievements are truly inspiring and they are from a local Highfields business………. which is passionate about passing on the art of cake decorating to all aspiring students.

Miles Teen One Step Closer to Achieving Her Nursing DreamFormer Miles Hospital assistant in nursing (AIN) Rachael Wylie is one step closer to fulfilling her career goal of becoming a nurse, thanks in part to a bursary offered by the University of Southern Queensland. The 17-year-old has been named as the sole recipient of the university’s Felicity Purcell Nursing Bursary. The bursary is presented to one school-leaver each year, who is interested in pursuing a career in nursing, particularly in a rural setting.

Rachael started her nursing studies in early March at USQ. However she is not new to the health sector. In year 11, Rachael completed a certificate three in health services assistance at the Miles Hospital as a school-based trainee.

“Every Wednesday I would attend the hospital and I would pick up extra shifts, when I could,” Rachael said. “From about year 10, I decided that I would focus on nursing and explore my career options in that field. Working at the Miles Hospital

gave me a great experience and an insight into how hospitals are run and how they work. It has given me a real ‘jump start’ on my career.”

Rachael’s mum, Helen Wylie, also works as a nurse at the Miles Hospital. “We are not only very proud of Rachael, but incredibly grateful to the support she received at the Miles Health Service,” Ms Wylie said. “We have a lovely group of high-achieving, professional, young registered nurses who have guided her as well as being amazing role models for Rachael.”

Once she completes her bachelor’s degree, Rachael hopes to further her experiences as a graduate and eventually complete more training in midwifery. “Eventually I would like to return to a rural area,” she said.

Felicity Purcell Nursing Bursary provides financial support to one first-year nursing USQ student who is from a rural area. The bursary is in honour of USQ graduand Felicity Purcell who had a

very successful career in nursing both here and overseas. Tragically, Felicity died from breast cancer in 2008 aged 33 years.

Be Smart With Your FinanceWhen times are tough in small business, it makes it even more important to ensure you are managing debt the best way possible.

Time and time again we see businesses pick up a piece of equipment or a vehicle using their overdraft when they should have considered finance by lease or chattel mortgage (CM) instead.

Overdrafts are designed to help you manage fluctuations in cash flow, not to buy ‘stuff’. Even if you have available cash, it’s worth considering a CM as it can be more profitable to free up cash rather than have it tied up in equipment or vehicles.

You might think that you don’t want to go through the hassle of applying for a specific loan for the item, but you’d be surprised how smooth the process can be – especially if you use an experienced broker. In the long run, it is often worth the extra time to get the finance. A CM is similar to a house mortgage. The ownership of the equipment or vehicle is yours on purchase and a

mortgage stays over the goods as security until the loan is repaid in full.

A CM is usually a fixed interest loan paid off over a one to five year term. Using a CM can really assist with business profitability, especially while interest rates remain low. You can choose to make a lump sum payment (balloon), at the end of the loan term, which means your regular repayments will be reduced. CMs can also be useful for those who are cash accounting, as you can claim the GST component of any vehicles or equipment you purchase upfront.

Also - don’t just think of CMs for vehicles or factory equipment. Recently we arranged finance for a new air-conditioning system for an office building.

Most importantly, consult with your accountant before making any purchases so that you can fully assess the taxation and cash flow consequences and make sure you are making the choice that is right for your business.

ForkForce AustraliaForkForce Australia launched its new Enforcer rough terrain forklift range in mid 2013.

To date the Enforcer rough terrain forklift has been a massive success in Australia with over 1000 Enforcers forklifts sold. The rough terrain has been developed specifically for the Australian market and to Australian standards.

According to Adrian Martin, Operations Director at ForkForce, “We had to double our original order and the factory has been working overtime to keep up delivery because there has been such a high demand ever since we introduced them to the market mid-2013”.

The launch of this range has been an Australia wide success with particular interest for the rough terrain forklift from ForkForce’s Toowoomba branch.

The range currently includes 2.5 and 3.5 tonne lift capacity with lift heights from 3.3m to 6m in both 2 and 3 stage masts.

ForkForce attributes the success of these units to being the most competitively priced rough terrain forklift in the market with great features like its compact design, high ground clearance, integral side shift, traction tyres and high quality Yanmar engines.

Martin went on to say, “The popularity has been so high that our own hire department is struggling to secure these units for our hire fleet because most of these forklifts are selling even before they have arrived”.

Even more promising than the huge success these forklifts have seen in the Australian retail market has been the number of forklift dealers

around Australia who have been quick to acquire these new rough terrain forklifts for their own rental fleets!

Forkforce’s product range includes everything from walkie stackers, reach trucks, 1 tonne to 25 tonne forklifts with an extensive range of lift and reach capacities and fuel types.

For more information or a quote on a new 2.5T and 3.5T Enforcer rough terrain forklift, please contact ForkForce on 1300 42 3675.

Stress – It Can Affect Us AllThe founder of World Organic, Megan Douglas, has been kind enough to provide me with the following information to help some of my readers cope and deal with stress. Stress affects many of our friends and family members and the effects it has on our overall well-being and physical health can be detrimental.

How To Manage Stress: It is important to remember that stress need not affect us in a negative way. It is created by our reaction to situations and not by the situation itself. If we can temper our reactions, if we can manage life’s roller-coaster with a degree of equanimity and perspective, then we can minimize the adverse consequences of stress.

Stress management tips that may help you:

• First and foremost, know what your stressor is! Too often, people accept that they are stressed without taking the time to properly think through exactly what it is that is making them stressed. Anything can cause you stress – your work, your relationships, your body image, even the poor performance of your favourite sports team. Learn to identify what is making you stressed. It’s a necessary first step in dealing with the problem.

• Try meditation. The benefits of meditation are vast. If you’ve got the time, have a look at our blog on meditation in the ‘Soul’ section of our website. The simple action of breathing in a meditative state will add oxygen to your system and will bring you a measure of focus and control.

• Moderate your consumption of alcohol and/or cigarettes. They’re crutches. They might dull the feeling of stress in the short term, but they do nothing to help the problem and have their own health-related costs.

• Live well. Get a good night’s rest (seven hours minimum), eat healthily, exercise, pamper yourself occasionally, make time for family and friends, get a pet (if you like animals!). All of these things have been shown to help mitigate against stress.

• Know your limits and be prepared to either say no or get help. It’s when we take on too much that we’re most likely to experience stress.

• Try hypnotism. Like meditation, hypnotism can be particularly useful in helping you manage the causes and symptoms of stress.

Have a look at our ‘Mind’ blog to discover the many benefits it can offer.

• Look after your skin. When you become stressed, the amount of blood and oxygen which is supplied to your skin lessens dramatically. As a result, your skin will often take on a grey pallor and become dry, flaky and prone to irritation. When this happens, it is as important to care for your skin as it is for your general physical and emotional self. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize, and even visit a masseur if you can. Hopefully,

we don’t need to tell you that your skin will repair itself much more quickly if you use natural, organic products rather than synthetic ones!

So, there you have it. It’s highly unlikely, unless you live in a cocoon, that you can avoid stress. However, if you opt for a thoughtful, balanced approach to life you can manage it and you can master it. In the end, that’s a much more desirable option than having it master you.

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling DownsMy Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. . We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a bulk billed services where a team of midwives provides the care.

The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and

Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired. ¬This care may be in a shared model with the woman’s GP, in a shared model with the woman’s birthing hospital or with a private obstetrician. The midwife can book women into their birthing hospital, provide comprehensive care and education, order and interpret pathology and radiology as required and conduct assessments of fetal wellbeing using a CTG as required. All documentation will be shared with the woman’s consent, with her GP and birthing hospital. If the woman desires, she may additionally access continuity of care from one of the midwives for birth care in Toowoomba Hospital.

My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs has the ability to enable access for all women through the option to bulk bill Health Care Card holders and to offer services for other women with minimal

out of pocket costs. Similarly to GP services, consultations are time based with the majority of consultations being from 40 minutes to one hour. Again, depending on the consultation, the woman may come to central clinics (one each in Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla) which will be established during the project or may receive a home visit from the midwife (depending on their location). Women who require out of hours services may contact the My Midwives on call phone for additional care if appropriate. Women requesting continuity of midwifery care for birth will additionally have access to their own midwife out of hours.

What is my macular and why do I need to get it checked? The macular is the central area of the retinal at the back of your eye responsible for high resolution or detailed sight. It is a highly organized structure and unfortunately, easily prone to damage from accumulations of cellular debris and leaky new blood vessels. This is called Macular Degeneration or MD. Further information can be found at: www.mdfoundation.com.au

While MD is a devastating problem for sufferers, it is also quite a problem for our society as well. A recent study called and commissioned by Novartis Pharma and conducted by Deloitte Access economics (Eyes on the Future) estimated that the total societal cost of vision impairment and blindness from all forms of AMD in Australia was slightly more than $5 billion per year. So do it for yourself or for Australia and get your macular checked.

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Turns 7!!Seven years ago Dr Eddie Roos realised a long held dream. “I saw the synergy that could occur by combining a medical skin practice with a beauty salon: medical treatments with the best cosmetic outcome in mind. It was a new concept at the time but I truly believed patients would benefit from a more holistic approach to skin care. With a dream and a business plan, Cosmetic Elegance Clinic was born.”

Now, seven years later, the clinic has grown beyond Dr Roos’ expectations. It is a comprehensive skin clinic, encompassing cosmetic and beauty treatments, a world class laser clinic and, with his special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a well-respected skin cancer clinic too.

“But we couldn’t have got to where we are today without our dedicated staff,” said Dr Roos. “Together we aim to provide our clients with skin care that is uncompromising in its professionalism and quality, in a comfortable and personal environment.”

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is serious about skin care, with a passion for their treatments and love for what they do. Practice manager

Gil Campbell said, “We believe in an age of increasing technology that personalised service is imperative. Our clients’ needs come first, and

we endeavour to answer any skin concerns and questions no matter how big or small.”
