State Media Confirmed The DeathOf Hilal Al-Assad, The Presidents

Cousin;Insurgent Offensive In Latakia AppearsTo Be Holding Gains

March 25, 2014 By Scott Lucas, EA WorldView [Excerpts]

Pursuing a major offensive in Latakia Province and co ntinuing other operations innorthern and southern Syria, insurgents inflicted heavy losses on regime forceson Monday.

Well-placed sources say that President Assads figh ters have suffered about 1000casualties since last Friday across front s from Latakia to Idlib and Aleppo in th enorth west to Quneitra and Daraa in the south.

State media have confirmed the death of Hilal al-Assad, the Presidents cou sinwho l ed the milit ia of the National Defense Forces in Latakia.

The claimed deaths of two o ther Assad cousins, Ali and Kafeh, are stillunconfirmed.

In Aleppo, Brigadier General Samea Yusuf Abbas, the head of a Republican Guard unit, has been killed.

The insurgents launched what appears to be a well-coordinated and long-plannedoffensive in Latakia in western Syria on Friday.

They soon took the Kassab crossing, the regimes last border link with Turkey.

Opposition fighters also moved into the nearby village of the same name, althoughfighting continues.

News of the southern front from Daraa to Quneitra, close to the Golan Heights and thedemilitarized zone with Israel, is limited because of a media blackout by the insurgents.

In Aleppo, however, gains by opposition forces on the northwest edge of the city andattacks on an Air Force intelligence base have been reported by websites linked toforeign fighters.

Insurgents are now attacking Tell Shuwehneh, a hilltop overlooking western Aleppo cityand close to several Syrian military facilities Joanna Paraszczuk has a full accountfrom the website of the Chechen faction Jaish al-Muhajireen wal Ansar:

    FORWARD OBSERVATIONS

At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh hadI the abili ty, and could reach the nation s ear, I would, pour o ut a fiery stream ofbiting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke.

For it is not ligh t that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thund er.

We need the storm, the whir lwind, and the earthquake.

The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom theyoppose.

It is said that the average age of American soldiers kil ledin Vietnam was 19 years and 10 months. Some people believe that number is in correct. So, let's make it 20 years and 10 months to be on thesafe side.

After all , making them st il l t eenagers doesn 't look goodfor public consumption.Consumption...that's a good word .

Average age 19,from the senior p rom to Vietnam.Jesus...that's a lot for the American people to face. But th en again, I can't imagine the American peoplefacing anything.

Anytime you threaten someone's beli ef system, there is an urgent instinct to deny its reality.

As a medic in Vietnam, one of t hose U.S. soldiers was a 19 year-old heroinaddict who b lew his brains ou t with hi s M-16.I was there in the tent with him shortly after he pulledthe trigger. There was blood everywhere.

Afterwards , I threw my fat ig ue jacket away in a burning55 gallon oi l drum.Oil d rum...something future American soldiers would d ie for.Suicide was one of those things i n Vietnam that wasunspeakable.Rampant heroin addictio n by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam

was another unspeakable truth.Murdering fellow soldiers in Vietnam was anotherunspeakable truth.

A few weeks after I got to my un it in Vietnam,an enlisted man murdered his commanding o fficer withhis M-16.In another incident, two fellow soldiers got into a gunfight , and one was kil led with an M-16.I was there when he took his last breath. The war profiteering of billions and billi ons of dol lars by

American corporations was another unspeakab le t ru th .Very few of these war capitalists sent th eir own ch ildren to war.

Murdering Vietnamese civilians was another unspeakable truth .I helped take a young Vietnamese woman off of a helicop terwho died shortly afterwards because an American soldiertook his anger out on her.I was in the 1st Squadron 10th Cavalry, that had t hree fire baseswith heavy artillery. Those guns f ired into fr ee-fire zones kill ingwhatever happened to be there. The U.S. Government's insane poli cy of ki lling anything that moves.

There were the unfathomable number of American sold iersand Vietnamese who died as a result of Agent Orange exposure, and the birth defects that were passed on to their chi ldren. These notor ious w ar crimes were My Lai's from the skies.Unspeakable...The horror that con tinues generation after generation .

A year ag o my bro ther-i n-l aw died in a VA hospi tal as a resu ltof cancer from being sp rayed with the chemical agent Dioxin.I have a very good f riend who can barely walk, because whilehe was in Vietnam he handled the 55 gallon orange drums thatcontained this highly po isonous h erbicide. His grandson was born wi th a severe birth defect.Come to think about it...the whole U.S. terrorist war in Vietnam was and is sti llan unspeakable truth. We are all heroes accord ing to th e U.S. Government'splan to rewri te the history o f the Vietnam War.When I left Vietnam to go back to America,I slithered back into my country of origi n before anyoneknew it.That was when si lent betrayal became a deadly di sease. The moral injury that talks to you everyday.

So, it is over fo rty years later, and I am still writ ing about the magnificent l ie called Vietnam. Why in the world would I do th at?What is this obsession all about?

As a surv ivor , you abso lu tely have to speak fo r the dead. You have to speak the unspeakable. The so-called luxury o f silence has been removed.

There is no rest for the survivor unti l the message has been delivered.Because our souls were murdered in Vietnam by the U.S. Government.Let alone all of the loved ones of those soldiers. The youth in this coun try have to be told the truth,so they don 't become a folded flag in a casket. That is ultimately the gift that has to be given by thedead to the living. That is when the dead become f ree.

I'm like a broken record when I write about th e lies of the Vietnam War. A war the Vietnamese cal led the American War.Philip Jones Griffiths, a famous combat photographer in Vietnam had

this to say about the American War: The Vietnam Veterans Memorialin Washington, D.C. is 150 yards long. If the same memorial was bu iltfor the Vietnamese that were killed, it would b e nine miles long. The reason I write year after year about the same thing is because oneday long after the Vietnam generation is dead and buried, there will b esome trace of truth out there that is stil l breathing.Lying Is The Most Powerful Weapon In War.When I visit ed the Moving Wall that day in that small town in Idaho, there was something inscribed in large letters on the Wall that

reminded me of that American soldier who committed suicide. That something said:The Price Of Freedom Is Writ ten On The Wall.

And that is why more American so ld iers have commi tted suicidethan the 58,000 who died in Vietnam. That is why a good fri end of mine who was a Vietnam veteranhung h imself in a motel room several years ago. That is w hy I continue to w rite about the splendid resuscitationof shi t that says: The Price Of Freedom Is Written On The Wall. That's a self-inflicted M-16 round to the head.

One day while I was in a bunker in Vietnam, a sniper round went over my head. The person who f ired that weapon was no t a terroris t, a rebel, an extremist, or aso-called insurgent. The Vietnamese individual who tried to kill me was a citizenof Vietnam, who did not want me in his country. This truth escapes millions.

Question: The European Union has started a game that it is not able to finish. It (EU)couldnt predict the reaction of Moscow?

Pilash: People of Ukraine are trapped between Western and Russian imperialism butUkrainian elite is itself an enough cynical player at this chessboard.

And Im not sure whether the EU started this game on its own.

The ousted president Yanukovich, just as president Kuchma a decade ago, hesitatedbetween pro-Western and pro-Russian orientation, but generally was convenient to bothsides (for instance, his legacy includes endorsing Shell for eco-dangerous shale gasdrilling in Ukraine).

  • 8/12/2019 Military Resistance 12C23 McCain and Abel

    9/27

His Party of Regions went on elections with slogans oriented on pro-Russian electorate, but in 2013 his government switched to an official campaign in favour of the free trade /association agreement with the EU. While finances and debt were deteriorating, Ukrainefound itself under pressure of both IMF and Kremlin. Its leadership (Yanukovich andprime minister Azarov) canceled the prepared signing of the EU agreement hoping to getmoney from Russia.

This is the point when the so-called Euro-Maidan protests started. Two decades ofbrainwashing about the paradise in the EU created in many clusters of Ukrainiansociety an idealized view of European integration as a solution to all problems (but somesupport it from a quite pragmatic point huge amount of unemployed Ukrainians work inthe EU).

It was paradoxical how protestors, many of whom were driven by rage caused by socialinjustice and economic inequality, manifested under EU banners while throughout theEU people protesting for similar reasons burn these flags!

However, it seemed like the Euro-Maidan wou ld decline and disseminate on itsown until the government showed itself foolish enough to disperse it with brutalforce thus sh ifting the main message of anti-government protests fromenthusiasm for EU association to condemnation of police violence andYanukovichs arbitrary rule.

So this stage of protests was apparently less pro-EU though different political actorsfrom EU (be it Rebecca Harms, Carl Bildt, or Baroness Ashton) tried to intervene anduse the situation to push their own interests.

However, there wasnt some steady EU plan behind the events, and theirproposals were rather moderate compared with the final outco me.

And since the protests turned to violent clashes with riot police after the adoption ofrepressive 16 January laws limiting freedom of speech and protest then, events inUkraine were surely out of control of EU, Russia, US, or any other.

Russian TV channels can be full o f commentaries from Western fascist s andconspiracy theorists (from Marine Le Pen to Lindon LaRouche) claiming contrarybut peopl e on Maidan werent mobilized and contro lled by the EU.

As to the reaction of Moscow, it wasnt predictable at all. A transparent approach fromRussia would require joining its European counterparts, Ukrainian government, opposition and civil society in early tackling the crisis at round tables; instead Moscowchose to broker behind-the-scenes agreements with unclear provisions.

Question: Even if the EU was able to play stronger, it seems to be trapped between itsgeopolitical and economic interests? (= because of its economic relations with Russia, the EU is not willing to oppose harder to Putin)

Answer: Exactly. The reason why the EU (especially its main powers, Germany andFrance) is delaying the moment to impose economic sanctions is because they willaffect its economic ties with Russia. Russia may be not the main trade partner but its

  • 8/12/2019 Military Resistance 12C23 McCain and Abel

    10/27

important in supplying gas and oil. Ironically, its precisely Gazprom that makes the mostobvious gains in Crimea its going to privatize the local petroleum resources.

Question: How does Washington see its role in Ukraine (and the region in general) atthis moment? What are the differences between the Republicans and the Democrats(concerning the US policy towards Ukraine)?

Answer: Being a staunch opponent of the US foreign policy, especially of theirintervention to Latin American affairs, I have to notice that Washington didnt play anyimportant role in Ukrainian regime change, contrary to widespread clich.

Obama and Kerry seem to combine seeking for diplomatic resolution with play on oilprices and other economic parameters sensitive to Russia.

Id attribute this not only to less aggressive politics of Democratic administration but alsoto the crisis of the US global hegemony. In the 2008 Russian offensive, Republicanswere unable to effectively back their Georgian clients, so Democrats try to be lessbelligerent in their speeches but more clever in actions.

Ultimately, the main points o f the 2 parties are pretty the same. Lots of observers,in Ukraine and abroad, spoke extensively on John McCain visit to Maidan inDecember; however, few noticed that the old Republi can warmonger was, in fullaccord, accompanied by another US senator Chris Murphy who is consideredone of the most l iberal Democrats.

In more general approach towards the region, that Republicans are eager to relyexclusively at pro-American East European governments to counterweight both Russiaand Germany/France while Democrats agree at more complex solutions satisfyinginterests of multiply powers. Therefore during ongoing crisis even Brzezinski, thehawkish advisor to Democrats, warned Ukrainians from joining NATO and proposed

Finland-style neutrality instead. Im afraid, however, that new Ukrainian establishmentfacing Russian military threat will intensively pull Ukraine towards NATO membership.

So its an important task for anti-war activists to prevent Ukraines submission to anymilitary bloc.

Question: How important for Russia are Crimea and eastern Ukraine? How far do youbelieve that Putin will go?

Answer: Putin is quite hypocritical when claims Russian troops in Crimea are defendingRussian-speakers, compatriots etc. Its an open intervention, and a very adventurousone. Yes, Ukrainian ultranationalists activity and failures of new Kiev leadership (like

revoking the almost nonfunctional bill on regional languages but not banning Russianas is reported in pro-Kremlin sources) contributed to counter-protests in the (Russian-speaking) Southern and Eastern Ukraine. But the formal pretext of Russian invasionwas forged and its a clear violation of international law.

I support the right of self-determination but I cant support a referendum carried out in arush and at the point of bayonets.

  • 8/12/2019 Military Resistance 12C23 McCain and Abel

    11/27

Previously, many saw a war between Russians and Ukrainians less possible than, say,US and Canada. We used to be fraternal peoples but these actions seriously raise themenace of a war. In my opinion, the unanimous voting in the Federation Councilproviding President Putin the right to deploy Russian forces in Ukraine, was the majorstep towards this disaster. Whats even worse, nobody can predict how far the situationwill deteriorate; violent clashes between Russias supporters and opponents occur ineastern regions of Ukraine.

On the other hand, interests of Russias ruling class correspond with a relatively smoothcapture of Crimea (with its Russian community and Sevastopol naval base) not a full-scale war for eastern Ukraine.

Industrial cities of Kharkov, Donetsk and Dnepropetrovsk located there still have lots ofSoviet-era factories (owned mainly by Ukrainian bourgeoisie) but, in reality, Ukraine, oneof the poorest countries in Europe, isnt too economically attractive for any foreignpower.

Russian intervention in Crimea seeks rather symbolic and irrational long-termaims of re-establishing Russian empire, and leads to dangerou s race ofnationalisms in both states: in Ukraine it gives even more legitimacy to the farright and its paramilitaries, in Russia thousands are forcefully driven to pro-intervention rallies while socialists and pacifists (even an old Leningrad siegesurvivor) are attacked and arrested for attending anti-war rallies.

Thats why we need an international anti-war solidarity campaign like in 2003 againstUS-led invasion to Iraq.

Question: What are the latest reactions of the people in Kiev towards the temporarygovernment? Who is winning in Ukraine: one group of oligarchs, fascists, EU, USA,Russia?

Answer: Ordinary people in Kiev who overwhelmingly supported the Maidan protestsagainst the corrupt and increasingly authoritarian Yanukovich are divided in relation tothe temporary government.

Some succumb to the patriotic hysteria and turn blind eye on the misdoings of the newauthorities; but others feel betrayed by the politicians who used their uprising and deathof more than 100 people (including an anarchist) killed by snipers to get into power.

Many are definitely discontented with the composition of the government: theydemanded it not to inclu de the wealthiest or unprofessional people but it did.

They say, at the co re of the system, litt le has changed.

Under Yanukovich, neoliberal reforms were launched in pension system, healthcare andeducation.

Now Yatsenyuk, the new premier, calls for austerity and agrees to all IMF demandsregarding increasing fees and cutting pensions in order to get the credit.

  • 8/12/2019 Military Resistance 12C23 McCain and Abel

    12/27

Under Yanukovich, the political system was under the control of the wealthiest oligarchslike Akhmetov, Firtash, Pinchuk, and the ruling Party of Regions represented theirinterests.

Now the oligarchs just switched their allegiance and remained; two of them, Kolomoyskyand Tatuta, were appointed governors to Dnepropetrovsk and Donetsk respectively anduse restrictive measures to suppress discontent.

Only one oligarch, Firtash, was detained interestingly, not by Ukrainian authorities butby FBI in Vienna.

So, in fact, groups of oligarchs still are the main force dominating in Ukraine. Contrary toBosnian protests, even grassroots movements in Ukraine werent ready to demandrecall of privatization process.

Maidan was a contradictory mass movement not a fascist coup; but it really includedstrong far right elements (Svoboda, a party with 10% vote on last national elections, andRight Sector, a coalition of barely known fascist movements). Their militants still patrolsome streets; Svoboda got several secondary posts in the mainly Batkivshchyna(Timoshenko-led party without clear ideology) government (now its an EU-tolerantfascist party with ministers like LAOS was) but its surely not the dominant force there.

They joined the protest though being hostile to almost all proclaimed aims of themovement political democracy, parliamentary republic, European integration (Svobodaeven opportunistically started endorsing joining EU though its notorious foreign partners

National Front in France, National Democratic Party in Germany, Golden Dawn inGreece are very Eurosceptical).

At the other hand, they shared anti-Russian sentiment and tried to impose on themovement their own agenda and symbols: red and black banner of the Ukrainian

Insurgent Army, chants Glory to Ukraine and (more extreme and rejected by Maidanmajority) Death to enemies, fierce anti-communism leading to destruction ofmonuments dedicated to Lenin.

These dubious actions triggered by the Nazis naturally alienated the population ofEastern and Southern parts of Ukraine. Polls show that popular support of the two farright presidential candidates, Tyahnybok and Yarosh, is now below 2-3% each. But openneo-Nazis, namely C14 (affiliated with Svoboda) and SNA (part of Right Sector), remaina real threat.

Nazis have repeatedly attacked left-wing activists and venues in last years, the previousgovernment turned blind eye on their violence and even promoted Svoboda as a

counterweight to mainstream opposition; in fact, nothing has changed dramatically foranti-fascists.

Question: Should the Ukrainian people choose a side in this imperial game? (Is Putinreally protecting the interests of the Russian speaking Ukrainians or)

    Answer: Certainly not.

  • 8/12/2019 Military Resistance 12C23 McCain and Abel

    13/27

Ukrainian people shouldnt side with governments neither in the West nor in theEast; in stead, they have to fin d their o wn way.

But first, they need to overcome the vicious circle of o ligarchs and fascists (bothUkrainian and p ro-Russian).

Al l Ukrai nian part ies are on the r ight ; they are economicall y pro -capit ali st , sociallyconservative and try to draw the social unrest away from the enormous cleavagebetween the narrow g roup of oligarchs and the working majority to differentidentity conflicts o n the ground of language, ethnicity or histori cal memory.

The trade unions are weak, and there is no genuine left force to represent the workingclass. Parliamentary Communist party, a recent loyal satellite of the bourgeois Party ofRegions, is communist in name only.

Its time for small new left initiatives like Left Opposition, Direct Action studentunion or Commons j ournal to propose a clear socialist alternative so thatUkrainians could join SYRIZA and other left movements throughout Europeagainst neoliberal austerity and nationalist p rejudice; after all, Ukraine is not onlyBanderas birthplace but also Makhnos and Trotskys.

As to the in ternat ional suppor t, as Nikolas Kozlof f, a progress ive expert on Lat in America, pointed out : The left must cont inue to cri tique U.S. foreign po li cy whil eseeking o ut, identifying, and providing solidarity for progressive elements whichare resisting Putin in both Russia and Ukraine.

And this is the point where Greeks could give Ukrainians a good lesson of classsolidarity and struggle.

WASHINGTON The Department of Veterans Affairs revealed the solution to the crisisof veteran suicide and post-traumatic stress is only a couple thousand Facebook Likesaway, according to an official statement released today.

The Facebook Like, a tool that instantaneously conveys heartfelt appreciation, unyielding support and zealous fervor for distant and unheard-of causes, hasrevolutionized the bandwagon movement and proven instrumental in combating post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

The Facebook Like has virtually eliminated the need for physical and mentalrehabilitation clinics, transition assistance programs, basic fellowship, and the lovingembrace once provided by families, said VA spokesperson Clyde Davies. At the ratewere going, PTSD will be cured by tomorrow.

The alarming number of suicides stemming from untreated cases of PTSD has garneredsignificant media attention within the past few years, pulling into question the adequacyof treatment provided to afflicted veterans. Fortunately, the sympathy of flag-waving

Americans on the Internet has had a palpable impact on tormented service membersworldwide.

All I really hoped for was a job, or something I could contribute towards to at least giveme a sense of purpose, said Greg Delhenney, a veteran of Fallujah and triple-amputeewho suffers from severe post-traumatic stress and missing limb disorder.

I cant even begin to describe how great it felt to know that fifteen complete strangerscared about me on Facebook. It gave me the strength I needed to press on.

Saying that one patriotic American literally saved his life by going above and beyond bysharing his status update, Delhenney said that due to Facebook, he never hesitates toshare how he feels.

I certainly wouldnt hesitate to vent my pent-up frustrations and the survivors guilt Irelive every waking moment of my heretofore wretched existence, or share the vividlyhorrific nightmares that plague the sleepless fits of despair I succumb to every night, headded. These people get me.

Karey Jameson, a high school sophomore in the affluent neighborhood of Irvine, Calif.,has been a staunch proponent of PTSD advocacy since last Tuesday.

Its like, so wrong, how like, we ignore and mistreat people with PTSD. Like, corporategreed is like, totally responsible for how like, subdued the PTSD crisis really is,Jameson sputtered. (Joseph) Kony needs to be stopped!

Our popularity on social media couldnt come at a better time, said VA Secretary EricShinseki, proudly wearing a Facebook-blue beret outfitted with a thumbs-up badge.

With all these looming budget cuts, we can conquer PTSD with the greatest resource ofall the guilty human heart and instead use our $150 billion budget to ensure ourveterans get the benefits they deserve.

At press time, Jameson had posted a picture to Facebook of her new tattoo, a yellowribbon with the caption, Save Darfur, on the small of her back. Delhenney is reportedlystill 1,000 likes shy of earning a date with Taylor Swift.

NABLUS -- Clashes broke out Sunday morning after Jewish settlers attacked Palestinianfarmers in their fields near the northern West Bank village of Burin south of Nablus.

Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official who monitors settlement-relatedactivities in the northern West Bank, told Ma'an that dozens of settlers from the nearbyBracha settlement attacked Palestinian farmers in the eastern fields of Burin.

The farmers fought back and clashes broke out as both sides hurled stones at eachother.

As a result, 30-year-old Munir Qandus was injured by a stone and was evacuated to thehospital for treatment.

Daghlas highlighted that Israeli settlers use all means possible to prevent Palestinianresidents from building agricultural roads which would help them access their lands.

The area around the villages south of Nablus is a frequent site of settler violence andPalestinian clashes with Israeli forces as it is located beside the notoriously violentIsraeli settlements of Yitzhar and Bracha.

In mid-February, local settlers threw rocks at Palestinian schoolchildren and attacked alocal high school in two separate incidents that led to clashes.

Settlers frequently attack a number of local villages and prevent farmers from reachingtheir lands, according to UNOCHA, in addition to attacks on local olive trees themselves.

As a result, local youths sometimes respond by targeting vehicles belonging to settlerson the area's main roads.

Settler violence against Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank issystematic and ignored by Israeli authorities, who rarely intervene in the violent attacksor prosecute the perpetrators.

In 2013, there were 399 incidents of settler violence against Palestinians in the occupiedWest Bank, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

85 Year Old Man Poisoned To Death; Captain Sabri, Walks Around TellingVillage Residents That He Will Teach

Them A LessonMarch 10, 2014, +972 Blog. Written by Yossi Gurvitz in his capacity as a blogger forYesh Din, Volunteers for Human Rights. A version of this post was first published onYesh Dins blog.

An Israeli Defense Forces night raid on the West Bank village Qaddum left three familymembers in the hospital.

Chances are well never hear about it in mainstream Israeli news outlets.

The security forces have a problem with the village of Qaddum were not quite surewhy.

Perhaps it is because the residents hold weekly demonstrations against the occupation.

Whatever the reason, it is clear that the security forces have decided to teach the villagea lesson.

Recently, a mysterious officer, who according to testimonies of the residents callshimself Captain Sabri, walks around telling vill age residents that he will teachthem a lesson. Some of the residents suspect him of being a Shin Bet offi cer.

Whatever Sabris organizational loyalty may be, he keeps his word.

The Friday demonstration s are dispersed with an iron fist ; beyond that theresidents also report recurring attacks on the village, even on days when nodemonstrations are held.

These attacks include the throwing of stun grenades and CS gas canisters (amore aggressive form of t ear gas).

In one case, which actually made it to the Israeli media of cou rse, under thepretense that one more person kil led by the IDF will make the kettle boil and bringabout a new inti fada Saeed Gasser Nassar Ali, an 85-year-old resident of thevill age, died after inhaling tear gas, which s eeped into hi s house following ademonstration.

The doctor who treated Ali found it hard to give him the best treatment possible, since hetoo was suffocating from the gas.

Lets say that again: the man suffocated in his house and died in the hospital shortlythereafter.

    Not during a demonstration.

    In his house.

Three weeks before Ali died, M., a resident of Qaddum, woke up at around 1 a.m.

His brother warned him that the army was raiding the village, and that all windows mustbe closed.

Soon after, even though he thought he had closed all the windows, gas seeped into thehouse.

The first to feel it was seven year old A., who began screaming that he couldnt breathe. Then four year old R. began complaining that he was feeling ill. The gas came throughthe windows of the bathroom, which is close to the childrens room.

M.s wife was in the bedroom holding H., a-two-month-old baby, in her arms.

When the gas reached the bedroom, she too had trouble breathing.

    M. noticed H. was turning blue and throwing up.

He called an ambulance, and reached the villages doctor the same doctor that, a fewweeks later, would have trouble treating the late Ali. The doctor gave H. an injection andhooked him up oxygen; soon afterwards he was evacuated to a hospital in Qalqiliya. Thedoctors told the parents that H. was in critical condition. Happily, by morning he wassignificantly better.

None of this will make the news.

    No one died.

Its just two children and an infant, poisoned by tear gas in the comfort of their ownhome.

Thats the way occupation works: it requires terror, and effective terror necessitates theknowledge that no place is safe; that even the peace of the childrens room may beviolated at any moment.

Dont look away, my dears: this is what we finance. This is what the flying shards looklike. Like the broken egg without which no omelet can be made, and all the other clichswe tell ourselves when we say there is nothing we can do.

Perhaps we can begin by not suffocating babies with gas?

Fear not: no IDF soldier will be harmed as a result of complaints filed after such events.

As apparent in the case of Jawaher Abu Rahma, killed after inhaling gas three years ago(a case that Yesh Din is spearheading to force the IDF will begin an investigation intoher death), the soldiers have nothing to fear.

    Theyre covered.

In our case, M., the father, does not intend to lodge a complaint. The rhetoric of themost moral army in the world failed to convince him.

He knows there is no point in making the effort. And who knows, if you complain, maybeyoull be targeted for harassment. So whats the point?

Better to make sure all windows are properly closed.

Maybe next time it wont be your baby.

A mother in St. Louis was unknowingly the reason for a lockdown at her special needssons school.

I was lying in bed when I received a frantic phone call from the teacher, Michael waspanicking, said Niakea Williams -- whose young son Michael has Aspergers Syndrome-- of the call she received before heading to the school.

I saw a teacher and she said Ms. Williams what is wrong? I said something is wrongwith Mikey and proceeded to go straight to my son.

Once Williams got to her sons classroom, she tried to calm him down and console him.

The Walnut Groves Elementary Schoo l principal then entered the room to info rmWilliams that she failed to sign in at the desk and had therefore broken pol icy.

I didnt sign th e book, but I had to check on my son. You can bring me the book.

She said, Oh no, Ive already called the police, recalled Willi ams.

Soon after, local police arrived at the scene and arrested Williams in front of herson whi le the rest of the schoo l was placed on a 12-minute lockdown.

The school said the reason for the lockdown was unauthorized entry to a school.

They escorted me away from my son, who already has emotional distress, saidWilliams.

Four officers told me to turn around and put my hands behind my back, I was underarrest.

Williams believes her arrest was unnecessary and that the schoo l overreacted.
