LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES

On many fronts, this was a successful year for Mill Springs Academy. In addition to secure financial management, strong enrollment, and thriving academic programs, we continued to take purposeful and meaningful

steps forward in our plans to finish the final land plan for our campus and design what we know will be, a beautiful permanent classroom building for our Lower and Middle students. When completed, this new building will finally put all of our students in permanent classrooms for the first time in MSA’s history and will become the focal point of our campus.

In addition to the many ways in which our school family contributes to our community, I hope you will notice that the Annual Fund is particularly vital to and reflective of our well-being. With parent participation percentages reaching into the 90th percentile for the fourth year in a row, it serves as a reminder that everyone does their part at MSA; the idea is that when every family, faculty and staff member contributes, all students benefit. This stellar show of support will be one of the key factors that will allow us to have a successful capital campaign and attract outside funds from local foundations on whose financial support we rely heavily upon to construct permanent buildings.

As I write this, I am already seeing how our community is embracing the campaign and am excited to see how this project comes to fruition. As we continue to look forward to a new year that is bound to hold more changes—as we continue to grow as a school and as a community—I am filled with excitement and anticipation. To the parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of MSA, your efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you for the support and commitment you bestow upon our community each and every day.

LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER

It is with deep gratitude that we present this Annual Report to the Mill Springs community. This publication reports on our financial health and its

continued appeal to generous donors, be they current parents, grandparents, faculty, staff or friends of the school. Just as important, this annual report is our chance to thank all of you for making MSA a priority in your charitable giving.

As I sit and reflect upon the 2013–2014 school year, “beginnings and endings” come to mind. At the beginning of the year our entire school family along with students and representatives from Kings Ridge, Westminster, Crabapple Crossing Elementary, and Brandon Hall gathered in our gym to speak with astronaut Christopher Cassidy by HAM radio as he traveled 238 miles above the earth in the International Space Station. We are grateful to our PreUpper Science Teacher, Martha Muir, for making the event possible. What an amazing experience it was for all in attendance to be able to communicate with an actual astronaut, hurtling through space on what is essentially a vessel the size of a U.S. football field.

And while so many wonderful, memorable, and fabulous things happen throughout the “middle” of each school year, I have to take this opportunity to highlight our amazing coaches and student athletes who managed to take home three AAC Championships in soccer, cross country, and baseball. For those of you reading this letter, you know first-hand that most of our students would never have the opportunity to even participate in things like drama, band, and sports at any other public or private school. But not only do our students participate in these activities, they compete…and WIN!!

Let me close by once again thanking each and every person listed in the pages of this report. So many of you work tirelessly, often times behind the scenes, to help make each and every year a success. Please know that your contributions and gifts of time and talent, do not go unnoticed. Without each and every one of you, we would not be able to teach the way our students learn.

Robert W. Moore Headmaster

ANNUAL FUND Chair Staff/Faculty ChairStacy Robinson Michael Adams

Mill Springs’ Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our school’s development program and contributes directly to the quality of education that takes place at the school. Gifts to the Annual Fund from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni are used to keep annual tuition increases to a minimum.

The growth of the Annual Fund reflects great trust in the mission of the school and has established a vital culture of giving as we move forward with our plans for expansion. Great commitment from our parents, volunteers, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the school has created an exceptional acceleration in the Annual Fund. Continued support of the Annual Fund will ensure a strong future for every student at Mill Springs Academy.

The following are just a few ways in which Annual Fund dollars are spent: n Keep tuition increases down

(annual tuition increases at MSA have remained at 3% over the past 5 years; much lower than the national average of 7%)

n Allow us to attract and maintain valuable staff (through competitive salaries and benefits like 401K, insurance, continuing education)

n Fund our Scholarship Endowment program (5% of the monies raised each year are set aside to help fund our scholarship endowment program)

n Broaden our Fine Arts curriculum (giving students full access to programs in art, theater, chorus, band, and media)

n Provide funds for various classroom enhancements n Covering unanticipated operating expenses

(unscheduled repairs, etc.)

MSA GOLF TOURNAMENTThe “Tee-Off For Technology” Golf Tournament was established in 1998 in order to raise money for MSA’s ever changing technological needs. Mill Springs is one of the only fully integrated laptop schools in the state of Georgia. Because technology is very costly and MSA is a not-for-profit private academy, our school is actively engaged in several fund raising opportunities to help this worthwhile program. All the proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit our “Technology for Learning” program.

Meetings were held on the last Monday of each month from August, 2013 through May, 2014. Due to the generous support of many individuals and families who supported our various fundraising efforts during the 2013–2014 school year, the PVA was able to make significant in-kind donations to Mill Springs. To get on the PVA’s meeting agenda or to become a volunteer, please contact the PVA President or the PVA Membership Coordinator whose names are listed in the school handbook. Membership forms are sent with enrollment packets and are available on line.
